Pirates
win big at Troy
The Prairie football team shrugged off a slow start to run away with a 74-12 win at Troy Friday, Oct. 9. Prairie received the opening kickoff and Jake Bruner had 2 of his 4 incomplete passes in the Pirates first possession as the Pirates came up short on fourth down giving Troy the ball at the Prairie 29. 6 plays later Troy punched in the touchdown on a 16 yard run by Jonah Lay. The 2-point try failed and Prairie trailed early 0-6. The Pirates didn’t take long to respond as they took over at their own 26 after the kickoff. Bruner picked up 21 yards on a run and then found Isaiah Shears open down the right side. Shears caught the ball at the 35 and raced past the Troy defenders to tie the game. Calvin Hinkelman then ran in the 2-pointer to put Prairie ahead 8-6. The Pirates forced Troy to punt on their next possession and Bruner broke through to block the punt with Devin Bruegeman covering up the ball at the Troy 44. Hinkelman picked up 19 yards on the option around the right side. Luke Wemhoff and Devin Bruegeman each caught a pass for 12 yards to give Prairie a first and goal at the 1. Brandon Anderson went up the middle on the next play for the touchdown and Bruner passed to Shears for the 2-pointer to make it 16-6. Troy answered back when quarterback Chase Blazzard passed to Lay down the right side and Lay would have score from 61 yards out except for a saving tackle by Bruner at the 2. Bruner was flagged for a horsecollar tackle on the play which put the ball inside the 1. Prairie stopped the Trojans on first and second down but Lay got his second touchdown on third down from the 3. The 2-point try again failed as Troy cut the lead to 16-12 with 1:57 left in the first quarter. From that point on the game belonged to the Pirates. A 42 yard pass from Bruner to Hinkelman put Prairie on the Troy 22. Wemhoff took a pitch around left end on the next play and scored. Wemhoff then added the 2-pointer to make it 24-12. Troy got into the Pirate side of the 50 on their next possession but Brandon Higgins ended that possession with an interception at the 25 that he returned to the 41. A slant pass to Shears gained 6 yards with 15 added on due to a facemask penalty. On the next play Shears ran a hitch and go where Bruner made a pump fake that froze the defenders and Shears wound up wide open deep down the field for a 39 yard touchdown. The 2-point try came up short as Prairie led 30-12. Bruner got his second blocked punt on Troy’s next series with Prairie taking over at the Troy 5 yard line. Bruner scored on the next play to make it 36-12 as the 2-point try again failed. Another turnover led to Prairie’s next score as Bruner stripped Lay of the ball after a completion and Higgins scooped up the fumble and took it to the 5 yard line. Bruner passed to Shears for the touchdown and then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 44-12. On Troy’s next possession Shears sacked Blazzard for a 7 yard loss that set up fourth and long and Prairie took over on downs at the Troy 47. A penalty set them back but two plays later Prairie pulled out the hook and lateral play. This one was more conventional than the one they had earlier in the season. Bruner passed out to the right to Shears who lateraled to Hinkelman who was trailing on the play. Hinkelman covered the final 40 yards to the end zone for the touchdown. He again passed to Hinkelman for the 2-pointer to put the game into running clock mode at 58-12 with 7:20 left in the third quarter. Prairie took over on downs again at the Troy 41 and Anderson scored his second touchdown of the game on a sprint around left end. Anderson added the 2-pointer to make it 66-12. On the ensuing kickoff an illegal block set Troy back to their own 9 yard line. On the next play Blazzard was sacked in the end zone by a host of Prairie defenders for a safety to make it 68-12. Shears had long return on the ensuing free kick by Troy from their 20 nullified by a holding penalty and Prairie took over at the Troy 49 as the third quarter ended. The JV offense took over and moved the ball downfield with Spencer Schumacher able to convert a fourth and 6 with a pass to Raice Dalgliesh for 11 yards. 3 plays later Schumacher threw his first varsity touchdown pass as he connected with Higgins for a 26 yard score that made it 74-12 as the 2-point run came up short.
