Lecture
is about old time healthcare
It is easy to forget that previous generations did not have the level of healthcare that exists now. Not even 150 years ago, a simple infection from a cut could mean death and the lack of understanding about nutrition and hygiene resulted in many illnesses that have now been eradicated. Even relatively recent developments in dentistry and surgery would have many of us envying our ancestors and their simpler lifestyles much less. Historian Steven Branting will present “The Pox, The Flux, and Other Maladies” this Thursday at the Historical Lecture Series at St. Gertrude’s. Steven Branting, a Lewiston resident writer, has been honored for the depth and variety of his research and field work by many of the nation’s premiere science, geography, history and preservation organizations. In 2011 the Idaho State Historical Society conferred upon him the Esto Perpetua Award, its highest honor, citing his leadership in “some of the most significant preservation and inter-pretation projects undertaken in Idaho.” His lecture series talk will be concerned with medical ailments that were more prevalent in past years. Some are almost nonexistent with the discovery of vaccines and modern medical advancements. This is the final lecture in the 15th Annual Fall Lecture Series presented by the Historical Museum at St. Gertrude. These events, held on Thursdays during the month of October, provide insights into the history of our region. The lecture begins at 7:00 p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m. and the event includes a Q&A session with the presenter. Light refresh-ments are provided. The lecture is FREE. These lectures have been made possible by the Idaho Humanities Council. The event will be held in the Johanna Room at Spirit Center at the Monastery of St. Gertrude located at 465 Keuterville Road, Cottonwood, Idaho.
