girls out for basketball
There are 22 girls turned out for the Prairie girls basketball team this year which opened their season with a win last Thursday, Nov. 19. There are 5 seniors, 2 juniors, 8 sophomores and 7 freshmen. Returning varsity starters are seniors Shayla VonBargen, Hailey Danly and Krystin Uhlenkott with sophomore Angela Wemhoff having seen some starting time last year as well. Also on the varsity are senior Talyss Lustig, juniors Kylie Tidwell and Chaye Uptmor and sophomores Leah Higgins, Josie Peery and Sydney Bruner. Higgins and Bruner are swing players who will also see JV time. Joining them on the JV team are senior Hanna Ross, who hadn’t turned out last year, sophomores DeLaney Uhlenkott, Sarah Ross, Sierah Poxleitner and Alexis Shears and freshmen Kodie Tidwell, Theresa Wemhoff, Jordyn Higgins, Krystyna Krogh, Hope McIntire, Kendra Duclos and Madison Pecarovich. Prairie should be in the mix for a state berth with the White Pine League getting 2+ berths again this year like last year. Lapwai is the overwhelming favorite for the top spot with Genesee looking strong for the #2 spot. Prairie could contend with Genesee although Krystin Uhlenkott apparently has suffered an injury which could possibly end her season, hurting the Pirates’ chances. Potlatch, Troy, Kamiah and C.V. all look to be similar to what they were last year. Like last year the team that finishes third at District would have to play at Wallace and the winner of that game has a play-in game against a southern Idaho team. Lady Pirates open with win The Prairie Lady Pirates opened their basketball season with a win over the Lewiston JV team 55-43 at Lewiston Thursday, Nov. 19. After a tight first half that saw Prairie lead 8-7 after one quarter and 22-21 at the half, Prairie opened it up in the third quarter by outscoring Lewiston 15-5 to take a 37-26 lead into the final quarter. Hailey Danly topped the scoring list with 13 points and added 6 steals and 4 assists. Kylie Tidwell scored 9 points with 4 steals and 4 assists. Chaye Uptmor also scored in double figures with 12 points with Angela Wemhoff adding 8 points, Shayla VonBargen 5, Josie Peery and Krystin Uhlenkott 3 each and Talyss Lustig 2. VonBargen led in rebounds with 6. A big help to Prairie was the 36 fouls called on Lewiston that gave Prairie 54 free throw attempts. They made 25, outscoring Lewiston 25-5 at the line. The JV team also won, scoring a victory over the Lewiston sophomores, no score available. Prairie 8 14 15 18 -55 Lew.
