come back to beat Grangeville
The Prairie Pirates trailed by 9 at the half but came back to beat Grangeville 47-41 in their season opener during the Idaho County Shootout Friday, Dec. 4 at Cottonwood. Prairie scored first when Terran Peery grabbed an offensive rebound and fed Jake Bruner for a lay-up but Grangeville answered with 5 straight points. Bruner tied it when he was fouled on a drive to the hoop and converted the 3-point play. Grangeville reeled off 6 straight but Prairie cut the lead to 1 on a basket by Bruner and a 3-pointer by Hunter Chaffee. Grangeville scored again to make it 10-13 at the end of the first quarter. A baseline jumper by Chaffee and a 3-pointer from the wing by Isaiah Shears gave prairie only their second lead of the half at 15-13. That lead lasted 30 seconds until Grangeville tied it with a pair of free throws. The Bulldogs took control the rest of the half as they outscored the Pirates 5-13 to take a 20-29 halftime lead. A 3 by Peery and 2 free throws by Brandon Higgins cut the lead to 4 early in the third quarter but Grangeville pushed the lead back to 7 at 27-34. Higgins scored on an inbounds play and Bruner scored with 5 seconds left to cut the deficit to 31-34 after 3 quarters. Grangeville scored to open the fourth but a layup by Higgins and a 3 by Chaffee tied the game at 36-all with 6:28 left to play. Grangeville’s Dillon Alder put the Bulldogs back on top with a free throw and a basket that made it 36-39 with 5:05 left. Bruner scored on a tip-in to cut the lead to 1 with 3:53 left and then Higgins hit the go-ahead 3-pointer from the wing. A defensive rebound by Bruner led to a driving lay-up by Peery that put Prairie up 43-39. Alder answered with a basket to cut the lead back to 2 with 32 seconds left Higgins inbounded the ball to Tyson Schlader who was to pass the ball to Bruner who was to streak towards the basket. Bruner got fouled and made both free throws to put Prairie up by 4 with 29 seconds left. Nine seconds later Bruner added another basket to give Prairie their biggest lead of the game at 47-41. That turned out to be the final score. Bruner had a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds and also added 4 assists, 3 steals and 4 blocked shots. Higgins scored 9 points, all in the second half, and had 4 steals and 3 assists. Chaffee came off the bench to provide an offensive spark with 8 points and had 7 rebounds. Peery scored 6, all in the second half, and had 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Shears scored 3 while Brandon Anderson scored 2 and Schlader scored 1. Austin Parks led Grangeville with 14 points while Alder had 13. Those two scored a combined 19 in the first half but were held to just 8 in the second half. Prairie was 17 for 58 from the field, 29%, and 8 for 18 at the line, 44%. Grangeville was 17 for 49 from the field, 35%, and 5 for 9 at the line, 56%.
