Lady
Pirates win 3 of 4
The Prairie Lady Pirates won 3 league games and lost a non-league game this past week. On Tuesday, Dec. 1 they opened their league schedule with a 70-49 win at Cottonwood over a Genesee team expected to be one of the league’s top teams. Thursday, Dec. 3, they traveled to Potlatch and rolled to an easy 73-22 win over the Loggers. At the Idaho County Shootout Friday, Dec. 4 at Cottonwood they suffered their first loss of the season as Grangeville beat them 38-42. Finally on Saturday, Dec. 5 they traveled to Troy and pulled away in the second half for a 54-27 win. Prairie jumped out to a 10-2 lead with an 8-0 run after Genesee had tied the game at 2-2. Hailey Danly was involved in 6 of those 8 points as she scored a pair of free throws, picked up an assist on an inbounds play with Shayla VonBargen scoring a wide open lay-up and then the roles were reversed when VonBargen tossed a long inbounds pass to Danly for a lay-up. Chaye Uptmor completed the 8-0 run with a lay-up. Genesee broke the run with a pair of free throws as Uptmor picked up her third foul and sat the rest of the half. Prairie answered with another 8-0 run with Danly taking another long inbounds feed from VonBargen right after Genesee’s free throws. VonBargen scored inside again and then Angela Wemhoff picked up a pair of lay-ups to make it 18-4. Talyss Lustig ended the first quarter scoring by taking an inbounds feed from Wemhoff for a lay-up as Prairie led 20-4 at the break. With Prairie’s defense concentrating on senior Kaleigh Ranisate and sophomore Courtney Burk, the two 25+ points per game players, Genesee’s Kayla Cornell found some open looks and hit 5 of 6 shots in the second quarter including a pair of 3-pointers. She helped Genesee get back within 7 at 28-21 but Prairie then weathered that rally with a 9-4 run that pushed the lead back to 14 at 37-24. VonBargen had 3 of those 9 points while Kylie Tidwell and Leah Higgins added a basket each and Wemhoff and Josie Peery scored a free throw each. Cornell cut the lead to 11 at the half with a late 3-pointer. Genesee got the lead down to single digits to open the third quarter but that lasted just 15 seconds as Uptmor scored a putback and Kylie Tidwell added a free throw to put the lead at 12. Genesee never got within single digits the rest of the game. Anytime Genesee looked like they might cut into the lead they would wind up fouling Prairie and the Pirates made a lot of free throws, 13 of 21 in the second half alone. Wemhoff was 5 of 6 at the line in the second half and 8 for 10 in the game. Wemhoff, a sophomore, had a great all-round game for the Pirates with a rare triple-double as she had 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. You can also add 3 steals to her stat line. VonBargen was the leading scorer for Prairie with 15 points and also led the team with 14 rebounds. Peery came off the bench to score 9, 8 in the second half. Danly, Lustig and Uptmor each scored 8, Tidwell 7 and Higgins 4. Prairie dominated on the boards 50-35 with Peery adding 9 and Lustig 7 to the double digit totals of VonBargen and Wemhoff. VonBargen and Tidwell each had 3 steals to tie with Wemhoff for the team lead. Prairie was a solid 25 for 55 from the field, 45%, and 20 for 33 at the line, 61%. Genesee was 19 for 51 from the field, 37%, and 9 for 18 at the line, 50%. Prairie rolled to a blowout win in the JV game, 66-8. They had leads of 4-0, 13-1 and 21-4 in the first quarter. They expanded the lead to 33-4 in the second quarter as part of a 20-0 run. They led 39-6 at the half. Theresa Wemhoff, Leah Higgins, Sydney Bruner, Jordyn Higgins and Kendra Duclos played the first quarter and then didn’t play at all in the second quarter with Hanna Ross, Sarah Ross, Madison Pecarovich, Laney Uhlenkott, Kristyna Krogh and Hope McIntire getting the bulk of the second quarter playing time with Sierah Poxleitner and Alexis Shears also seeing playing time and Prairie didn’t miss a beat. Prairie had a 17-0 run that started with the last basket of the first half and carried through the third quarter as they led 56-6 before Genesee scored their only 2 points of the second half. Prairie took a 58-8 lead into the fourth which sent the game into running clock mode. Prairie outscored Genesee 8-0 in the fourth. Duclos wound up as the leading scorer with 15 points with Bruner also hitting double figures with 10 points. Hanna and Sarah Ross each scored 8 while Leah Higgins scored 6. Both teams were missing a starter named Hailey in the previous game played just before Thanksgiving and it was Grangeville’s Hailey Sullivan that made most of the difference in the outcome as she scored 13 of her game high 21 points in the fourth quarter and made her first 12 free throw attempts before finally missing one. She hit 8 of those in the fourth quarter including 5 in a row after Prairie had tied the game at 36-36. Prairie scored first in the game as Tidwell hit from the baseline and Uptmor added a free throw for a 3-0 lead. Grangeville responded with 6 straight points and it was midway through the third quarter before Prairie would take a lead again. Prairie trailed 7-12 late in the first but VonBargen scored a putback to cut the lead to 9-12 at the end of the quarter. That would be Prairie’s last field foal until a putback by VonBargen in the third quarter. Two free throws out of 4 by Peery and a free throw by Uptmor allowed Prairie to tie the score at 12-12 in the second. Prairie added just 2 more free throws, 1 each by Tidwell and Peery, in the quarter though and Grangeville took a 14-18 halftime lead. A contributing factor to the lack of field goals was that VonBargen sat out most of the second quarter with foul trouble and Prairie couldn’t buy a shot from the outside. Wemhoff also sat out much of the second quarter with foul trouble. In the third quarter VonBargen scored a free throw and a putback to cut the lead to 1 and Wemhoff scored to give Prairie the lead at 19-18. Sullivan scored for Grangeville to put the Bulldogs back on top but Wemhoff scored again on a drive to the hoop to make it 21-20 with 3:40 left. Unfortunately for Prairie, Wemhoff picked up her fourth and fifth fouls in the next 35 seconds and had to leave the game. Prairie was limited to just a pair of free throws by Tidwell the rest of the quarter as Grangeville took a 23-26 lead into the fourth quarter. Early in the fourth VonBargen picked up her fifth foul and Danly followed a couple minutes later leaving Prairie to try and come back with just 2 starters left. Despite the foul problems Prairie put together 5 straight points after Danly fouled out to take a 35-34 lead. Leah Higgins connected from the perimeter, Tidwell scored a putback to tie it and Peery a free throw for the lead with 3:18 to play. Sullivan then hit a pair of free throws to put Grangeville back on top but Higgins tied it at 36-36 with 1:34 left. Sullivan scored the game’s next 6 points though to put the game out of reach. She hit a pair of free throws to put Grangeville on top for good, stole the ball and converted a 3-point play and then added another free throw for a 6 point lead with 21 seconds left. Peery scored a putback with 10 seconds left to make the final margin of 4 points. Tidwell wound up with 11 points to lead Prairie in scoring with VonBargen adding 7. Peery scored 6, Wemhoff and Uptmor 4 each, Higgins 3, Danly 2 and Lustig 1. Prairie fell behind 5-8 in the opening quarter before rallying to take the lead. VonBargen scored down low and Danly scored a pair of baskets as Prairie took an 11-8 lead into the second quarter. Prairie still led 12-10 after a free throw by Danly but then started turning the ball over and Troy capitalized with a 0-9 run to take a 12-19 lead. Prairie broke the run with 1:31 left in the half on a pair of free throws by Tidwell. A minute later Wemhoff stole the ball and fed the ball to Danly for a lay-up that cut the lead to 16-19 at the half. Troy twice led by 5 in the second half but with 7:03 left in the third Prairie started their run when Wemhoff scored on a lefthanded lay-up. A putback by Tidwell and a 3-point play by VonBargen put Prairie ahead 25-23. Troy tied it at 25 but a steal and lay-up by Danly kicked off a 10-0 run by the Pirates that carried into the fourth quarter. Prairie led 33-25 after 3 quarters and hit 6 of 13 shots in the quarter after making just 5 of 25 in the first half. In the fourth quarter they were even better connecting on 6 of 7 shot attempts and taking advantage of numerous trips to the free throw line. Prairie attempts 17 free throws in the fourth quarter alone, making 9 of them. Troy meanwhile went the other direction as they made 9 of 23 shots in the first half but just 2 of 21 in the second and had 21 of their 34 turnovers in the second half. Prairie finished the game with a 14-0 run. Danly led the scoring with 17 points while Tidwell and VonBargen also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively. Wemhoff scored 9 while Uptmor and Lustig scored 3 each and Peery scored 1. Despite Troy’s size advantage, Prairie won the rebounding battle 44-30 as Peery pulled down 10 to lead the team. VonBargen, Tidwell and Wemhoff each had 8 rebounds. Danly had 8 steals and Wemhoff had 3 assists and 4 steals. VonBargen and Lustig each added 4 steals. Prairie was 17 for 45 from the field, 38% and 20 for 40 at the line, 50%. Troy was 11 for 44 from the field, 25%, and 5 for 9 at the line, 56%. Prairie is now 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in league play. In the JV game Prairie shut out Troy 11-0 in the first quarter and went on to win 39-21. Leah Higgins had 5 points in the opening quarter with Bruner, Jordyn Higgins and Krogh adding 2 points each as Prairie took their lead. They made it 15-0 in the second quarter on a pair of putbacks by Kendra Duclos before Troy finally scored at the 4:48 mark. A basket each by Duclos and Pecarovich made it 19-2 before Troy scored 4 straight points at the free throw line. Sierah Poxleitner scored to make it 21-6 at the half. Bruner scored 6 in the third quarter as Prairie extended their lead to 32-12 by the end of the period. The fourth quarter saw Troy shave a couple points off the lead but never really threaten. Higgins and Bruner wound up with 8 points each to lead the JV’s in scoring. Duclos added 6 points with Pecarovich scoring 4, Uhlenkott 3 and Theresa Wemhoff, Jordyn Higgins, Krogh, Poxleitner and Kodie Tidwell adding 2 each. Prairie had a 37-32 edge on the boards with Leah Higgins, Jordyn Higgins, Sarah Ross and Duclos each pulling down 5. Wemhoff had 3 steals to lead the team with Higgins, Higgins and Bruner each adding 2. Prairie was 17 for 48 from the field, 35%, and 5 for 11 at the line, 45%.
