The Prairie Pirates opened their league schedule this past week and split a pair of league games. On Tuesday, Dec. 15 they won at Kamiah 49-42 then Friday, Dec. 18 at Cottonwood they lost to Lapwai 43-58. The loss to Lapwai is Prairie’s first league loss since losing at Kamiah at the end of the 2012-2013 season. Kamiah made an effort to limit Jake Bruner’s scoring and held him to 11 points but Brandon Higgins stepped up with 13 points including 4 big free throws down the stretch and Tyson Schlader added 10 points. Hunter Chaffee scored 6, Terran Peery and Calvin Hinkelman 4 each and Brandon Anderson 1. Bruner had 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 blocked shots. In a 2-quarter JV game Prairie held off Kamiah 22-13. Lapwai jumped out on the Pirates as Emmitt Taylor connected on a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 points as the Wildcats took a 6-16 first quarter lead. Prairie broke the run with a free throw by Peery at the 1:55 mark and Bruner ended the quarter with a long 3-point buzzer beater that cut the deficit to 10-16. Bruner then scored the first 7 points of the second quarter to give Prairie a 17-16 lead. He scored off a steal, hit a short bank shot and drained another 3 to give Prairie the lead. Peery then hit from 16 feet to make it 19-16. Lapwai came back to take a 21-23 lead as Lance Baptiste hit a couple of treys for Lapwai. A 3-pointer by Schlader put Prairie back on top at 24-23 and after a Lapwai score, Higgins gave Prairie the lead at the half with a driving lay-up with 27 seconds left to make it 26-25. The lead changed hands twice early in the third quarter with Higgins sinking a pair of free throws to make it 28-27 for Prairie. Taylor then got hot again sinking 2 straight 3-pointers that gave Lapwai the lead for good. A steal by Hinkelman led to a basket by Bruner but Lapwai then scored 11 straight points before Schlader scored with 26 seconds left in the quarter. Lapwai answered to make it 32-46 after 3 quarters. Prairie was able to get within 10 in the fourth quarter at 43-53 but Lapwai then scored the final 5 points, all at the free throw line, for their 15 point win. Bruner wound up with 26 points to lead all scorers but Prairie couldn’t provide him much help as the next highest scorers with Peery and Schlader with 5 points each. Higgins scored 4, Isaiah Shears 2 and Hinkelman 1. Lapwai also had the advantage on the boards 30-37. Bruner had 10 to lead the Pirates. Bruner also had 5 steals, 3 assists and 2 blocked shots. Taylor led Lapwai with 22 points and was 5 for 7 from 3-point range. Prairie was 16 for 52 from the field, 31%, and 8 for 19 from the line, 42%. Lapwai was 21 for 43 from the field, 49%, and 8 for 17 at the line, 47%. Prairie is now 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in league play. Prairie won the JV game 59-46. The Pirates led 12-6 after one quarter as Anthony Karel scored 4 points and Brandon Anderson, Dylan Schumacher, Carson Schmidt and Ryan Glimp scored 2 points each. Prairie pushed the lead to 24-11 in the second quarter and led 28-19 at the half with Lucas Wemhoff and Glimp scoring 6 points each in the quarter. Prairie led by 17 after 3 quarters and then withstood a 1-man Lapwai rally in the fourth to hang on for a 13-point win. Glimp wound up with 12 points to lead the scoring and Karel added 10 including 6 in the second half. Spencer Schumacher scored 7 of his 9 points in the second half. Anderson scored 7, Wemhoff 6, Dylan Schumacher 5, Todd Ott 4 and Brayden Wood and Nick Mager 3 each. Lapwai’s leading scorer, Kendall Leighton, scored 17 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter. Prairie had a 53-33 edge on the boards with Karel and Ott grabbing 8 rebounds each while Spencer Schumacher and Glimp added 7 each. Glimp had 4 steals and Mager had 3. Mager and Wemhoff had 3 assists each. Prairie was 22 for 49 from the field, 45%, and 15 for 34 at the line, 44%. Lapwai was 16 for 58 from the field, 28%, and 10 for 26 at the line, 38%. There was also an extra quarter of play before the start of the JV game for the C level players. Prairie won that 14-2. Noah Arnzen scored 6 points while Luke Schwartz scored 4 and Schmidt and Tanner Hibbard scored 2 each. Arnzen also had 6 rebounds and Hibbard and Schwartz each had a steal.
