Summit
loses at C.V.
The Summit Academy Patriots started off the new year with their second loss at C.V. this season as they fell 44-56 Monday, January 3 at Kooskia. Summit played it much closer this time around as they had lost by 20 in their previous meeting. C.V. jumped out to a 0-7 lead on the Patriots who struggled on offense early. The Patriots finally got on the board when freshman Dylan Krogh was put into the lineup midway through the quarter and scored Summit’s first basket. He later stole the ball and connected on a 3-pointer as he scored Summit’s first 5 points. Tyler Krogh closed out the first quarter scoring with a steal and drive for a lay-up. He was fouled on the basket and converted the 3-point play to make it 8-12 at the end of the quarter. Dylan Krogh swished another 3-pointer to open the second quarter and cut the deficit to just 1 point. At that point C.V.’s 6th man took over. Summit did a great job shutting down C.V.’s 6’7” Grant Wallace, who scored 24 in their first meeting but the Rams’ other big man, 6’4” junior Kam Mangun, who sat most of the first quarter, got hotter than a firecracker in the second quarter making 6 straight baskets and scoring 12 of C.V.’s points in a 3-17 run that put the Rams up 14-29 with 3 minutes left in the half. A 3-pointer by Tyler Krogh finally broke the run with Patrick Chmelik adding a pair of baskets to cut the lead down to 8. C.V. then scored the final 4 points of the half for a 21-33 lead. Summit came out strong in the third quarter and started to whittle away at C.V.’s lead. Chmelik scored twice to cut the lead to 8 but C.V. answered with 5 straight to push the lead back to 13. Dylan Krogh then drove to the hoop for a basket and followed with a 3-pointer and a free throw to cut the deficit to 7 at 31-38. Tyler Krogh hit a 3-pointer to close out the third quarter scoring and cut the deficit to 6 at 36-42. Dean Stubbers opened the fourth quarter scoring with a pair of free throws and Dylan Krogh hit the front end of a 1 and 1 to pull the Patriots within 3 at 39-42 with 7:09 to play. That was as close as the Patriots would get though as C.V. scored the next 5 to push the lead back to 8. Tyler Krogh hit the front end of a 1 and 1 to break the run and then a steal by Jake Stubbers led to a basket by Tyler to get the Patriots back within 5 with 2:55 left but C.V. then ended the game with a 2-9 run to claim the win. Tyler Krogh wound up with 16 points to lead the Patriots with Dylan Krogh adding 15. Chmelik scored 8, Dean Stubbers and Jake Stubbers 2 each and Caleb Currier 1. Despite C.V.’s size advantage, Summit held a 37-36 edge on the boards. Chris Osborne led the Patriots with 9 rebounds while Chmelik and Tyler Krogh had 8 each. Dean Stubbers had 3 assists and Tyler Krogh had 5 steals. The Patriots connected on 16 of 59 shots from the field, 27%, and 7 of 17 free throws, 41%. C.V. was 23 for 43 from the field, 53%, and 7 for 11 at the line, 64%. Summit is now 5-2 on the season with both losses coming at C.V. Summit 8 13 15 8 -44 C.V. 12 21 9 14 -56 Summit-D.
