Pirates
win 3 games
The Prairie Pirates won 3 games this past week, on a buzzer beater at Genesee 57-56 Tuesday, Jan. 12; by 13 at Asotin, 57-44, Thursday, Jan. 14 and by 30 over Potlatch at Cottonwood Saturday, Jan. 16, 70-40. Prairie led a couple of times in the first quarter at 4-2 and again at 11-10 after a 3-pointer by Brandon Higgins. Genesee led 16-19 at the end of the first quarter. Phillips hit two 3-pointers in the second quarter and Garrett Borth, who played very little at Cottonwood but started in this game, connected on all 3 free throws when he was fouled on a 3-point try as Genesee took a 25-34 lead late in the half. Jake Bruner hit a fallaway jumper with 12 seconds left to cut the deficit to 7 at the half, 27-34. Genesee continued to hold the Pirates at bay in the third quarter. Prairie was able to pull within 4 at 39-43 but Genesee scored the final 4 points of the quarter to take a 39-47 lead into the fourth. Bruner and Terran Peery each connected on a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter scoring and cut the lead to 4 but Genesee answered with 6 straight to take their biggest lead of the game at 43-54 with 6:33 left to play. Bruner got switched to Phillips defensively and helped shut him down and Prairie started their rally with a Tyson Schlader basket with 6:25 left. That kicked off a 10-0 run that tied the game at 53-53 with 1:56 to play. Bruner had 2 baskets and 2 free throws in that run while Hunter Chaffee added a basket. Bruner hit a bank shot to tie it. Genesee then worked the ball around and got Phillips free on a screen for a 3-pointer that put Genesee up 53-56 with 56 seconds left. Prairie missed some chances with Genesee rebounding and trying to run clock. Rhyker Wayt was fouled with 17.7 seconds left and went to the line for a 1 and 1. He was 2 for 2 earlier in the game and hit 8 of 11 at Cottonwood but missed the front end of the bonus and Prairie rebounded. That led to a lay-up by Higgins on a feed from Schlader with 6.9 seconds left and Prairie called timeout. As Genesee tried to inbound the ball, Bruner was called for a foul on Phillips, his fifth. Up by 1, Genesee pulled all their players to the backcourt so they wouldn’t pick up a foul on a rebound. Phillips missed the front end of the bonus with the ball going off to the right to Higgins who grabbed the ball and raced downcourt. He got all the way to the hoop for a lay-up with 1.4 seconds left to give Prairie their first lead since the first quarter. Genesee had no timeouts left and Schlader stole the inbounds pass. After the buzzer sounded the team mobbed Higgins against the wall behind the basket. You’d think they just won the state championship rather than a Tuesday night league game on the road. Bruner wound up with 23 points to lead the Pirates in scoring while Higgins scored 9. Calvin Hinkelman added 7, Chaffe 6, Peery and Schlader 5 each and Isaiah Shears 2. Prairie had a 30-26 edge on the board led by Bruner who had 8. Bruner had Prairie’s only steal and Higgins had 7 assists with Schlader adding 4. Prairie had assists on 15 of their 21 made baskets. The Pirates were 21 for 48 from the field, 44%, and 10 for 13 at the line, 77%. Genesee was 21 for 47 from the field, 45%, and 6 for 9 at the line, 67%. The major difference was that Prairie was 6 for 6 at the line in the fourth quarter while Genesee was 0 for 2. Both teams handled the ball well as Prairie had 8 turnovers while Genesee had 7. In their earlier matchup at Cottonwood, which broke Prairie’s 19 game home winning streak, Asotin shot the lights out hitting seven 3-pointers and 26 baskets. This time Prairie held them to just four 3-pointrs and 16 baskets. The game was tied 10-10 at the quarter break and Prairie led 25-22 at the half. Prairie jumped out to a 9-0 lead as Bruner hit 2 baskets and Peery scored on a putback then scored on a steal and converted the 3-point play. Prairie led 13-6 at the quarter break. In the second quarter coach Teel Bruner took Bruner and Higgins out to start the period and Potlatch outscored Prairie 2-8 to cut the lead to just 1 point at 15-14. Hinkelman scored Prairie’s only 2 points then scored on a 3-pointer and with a steal to push the lead back to 20-14. With the regulars back on the floor Prairie was able to push the lead to 10 at 29-19 before a late Potlatch rally got them back within 6 at 29-23. Schlader scored a pair of free throws late to make it 31-23 at the half. Potlatch opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer to cut the lead down to 5 but Prairie then took control as they outscored Potlatch 22-4 over the next 5+ minutes of action to take a 53-30 lead. They led 59-35 heading into the fourth quarter. With 3:02 left Peery scored a basket to give Prairie a 3-point lead at 68-38 and send the game into running clock mode. Each team scored just 2 points in the final 3 minutes. Bruner wound up with 30 points to lead the scoring with Peery also hitting double figures with 15. Hinkelman scored 7, Shears 5, Higgins 3 and Schlader, Chaffee, Thomas Schwartz, Anderson and Spencer Schumacher 2 each. Shears had a scare near the end of the half when he got knocked to the floor after making a lay-up. He may have tweaked his knee and had to come out of the game with Schlader going in to attempt the free throw. Shears was able to come back and play in the second half though and played some of his best ball of the season with 3 points and 6 rebounds in the half. Prairie had a 39-35 edge on the boards with Bruner pulling down 13 rebounds and Shears 7. Higgins had 5 steals and 3 assists while Bruner had 3 steals and 3 assists. Prairie was 25 for 63 from the field, 40%, and 17 for 25 at the line, 68%. Potlatch was 17 for 50 from the field, 34%, and 5 for 10 at the line, 50%. Prairie improves to 10-2 on the season and 6-1 in league play. Prairie also won big in the JV game as they rolled to an 81-22 win. Prairie jumped out to a 22-0 lead in the first quarter with Ryan Glimp and Spencer Schumacher scoring 8 each. Brandon Anderson scored Prairie’s final 8 points of the quarter and wound up with 12 in the period as Prairie led 30-4. The second unit played most of the second quarter and the pace slowed down a bit, but not much as Prairie took a 52-9 lead by halftime. Todd Ott scored 7 in the quarter and Luke Schwartz added 5. It was more of the same in the third although Prairie back off on the pressure defense. They didn’t force as many turnovers as in the first half but still outscored the Loggers 22-7 in the quarter to take a 74-16 lead into the final frame. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock and what amounts to the C team played the final period and still outscored the Loggers 7-6. Probably the lasting image from the JV game was the sight of 5’3” freshman Michael Schwartz being assigned the task of guarding Potlatch’s Luke Polley who must be at least 6’7” or 6’8”. Anderson wound up with 16 points to lead the JV’s in scoring and had scored as many points as the Loggers team when he left the game. Glimp added 15 points with Spencer Schumacher scoring 12, Todd Ott 9, Luke Schwartz 6, Dylan Schumacher and Noah Arnzen 5 each, Tanner Hibbard 4, Michael Schwartz 3 and Like Wemhoff and Brayden Wood each. Tayler Ott was the only on who played who did not score. The JV’s had a 33-25 rebounding edge led by Spencer Schumacher with 12. Dylan Schumacher 4 steals and 7 assists and Arnzen also had 4 steals. Wemhoff added 4 assists.
