Pirates win big on senior night
All three seniors had big nights to lead the Prairie Lady Pirates to a 72-13 win over Kamiah on Senior Night Tuesday, Jan. 26 at Cottonwood. Talyss Lustig scored 13 and Shayla VonBargen 11 while Hailey Danly 6 scored but had a double-double with 12 steals and 10 assists. Also scoring in double figures were Angela Wemhoff with 13 points and Chaye Uptmor with 11. 
Krystin Uhlenkott, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first game of the season, was also honored before the game as were statisticians and videographers Marisa Lustig and Lauren Alfrey. Obviously inspired by Senior Night, Prairie jumped all over Kamiah from the start as Danly had 9 of her 12 steals in the opening quarter as Prairie jumped out 8-0 and after giving up a basket 2:30 into the game, ended the quarter with a 22-0 run. They made it 26 straight points by scoring the first 4 points of the second quarter. Prairie then backed off on the intensity but still led 40-7 at the half. They came out in the third quarter by scoring the first 15 points of the half in another dominate quarter as they outscored Kamiah 22-1 despite subs getting most of the playing time. Coach Lori Mader put the seniors back on the court to start the fourth quarter and then made sure each one got an ovation from the crowd as they were subbed out one by one. In addition to the stats given already, Josie Peery scored 7, Kylie Tidwell 6, Sydney Bruner and Leah Higgins 2 each and Jordyn Higgins 1. Prairie had a 29-23 edge on the boards with Peery pulling down 7 to lead the team. Wemhoff added 7 steals as Prairie forced 42 turnovers from the Kubs, 20 in the opening quarter. Prairie was 33 for 58 from the field, 57%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%. Kamiah was 4 for 27 from the field, 15%, and 4 for 6 at the line, 67%. Prairie finishes their regular season with a 15-5 overall record, 10-2 in league play. They will be the #2 seed into the District Tournament and will play Friday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday night’s Genesee-Potlatch game. The JV team ended their season on a winning not as they also rolled to an easy victory 51-9. Sydney Bruner scored 6 points in the first quarter, including a 4 for 4 performance at the free throw line, as Prairie outscored the Kubs 14-0. They forced 13 turnovers in the opening period and between full-court pressure and their half-court trap, Kamiah was only able to attempt 4 shots and 2 of those were blocked, 1 by Bruner, the other by Sarah Ross. Prairie made it 17-0 in the second quarter before Kamiah finally got on the board with 2:26 left in the half. It was 17-4 at the halftime break. The first string came back on the floor to start the third quarter and it was much like the opening of the game as Prairie scored 18 straight points and forced 11 turnovers. Bruner added another 8 points and Kristyna Krogh scored 6 with Leah and Jordyn Higgins each adding 4 as Prairie took a 39-7 lead into the fourth quarter. The second unit had better luck finding the basket in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Kubs 12-2 in the final frame. Bruner wound up with 14 points to lead the scoring with Jordyn Higgins scoring 8, Leah Higgins and Krogh 6 each, Ross 5, Kendra Duclos and Kodie Tidwell 4 each, and Theresa Wemhoff and Hope McIntire 2 each. Prairie had a 31-28 edge on the boards with Bruner and Delaney Forsmann pulling down 5 each. Jordyn Higgins had 7 steals while Tidwell added 5. Wemhoff and Jordyn and Leah Higgins each had 2 assists.
