The Prairie Pirates will open District play as the #2 seed Friday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston. They will play Clearwater Valley, which knocked off Troy Wednesday, Feb. 17. If Prairie wins they would clinch a trip to State and advance to the District Championship game set for Friday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. With a loss they would have to win Monday, Feb. 22, at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 5:30 p.m., win at Wallace on Thursday, Feb. 25 and win a play-in game on Saturday, Feb. 27 to advance to State. State will be held at Vallivue High School in Caldwell March 3-5. Pirates win twice The Prairie Pirates finished their regular season with a pair of non-league road wins. On Tuesday, Feb. 9, they won 59-46 at Moscow and on Friday, Feb. 12, they won 74-59 at Grangeville. That last led to one of the more bizarre things we’ve ever seen at a basketball game. When Moscow broke through the 10-point barrier with 1:36 left in the first quarter as they tied the score at 11-11, their student section all let out a huge cheer and then rushed the court, while Prairie was advancing the ball to their offensive end. After some discussion the referees called a technical foul on Moscow with Jake Bruner making the second of the two free throws to put Prairie ahead. The ensuing possession led to a lay-up by Bruner that put Prairie up 14-11. Moscow answered to cut the lead to 14-13 at the end of the quarter. Tyson Schlader scored 6 for Prairie in the opening quarter, all on putbacks. In the second quarter Moscow put together a 0-7 run that gave them a 19-22 lead. Schlader’s fourth putback of the game broke the run and kicked off a half-ending 8-0 run for the Pirates. A steal by Burner led to a pair of free throws by him. Calvin Hinkelman scored inside and Bruner connected on a hook shot with 35 seconds left that made it 27-22. Prairie opened the second half with a 5-2 run that put them up by 8 at 32-24. Moscow then answered with a run as they outscored Prairie2-11 over the next 3 minutes to retake the lead at 34-35 with 2:31 left in the third. That was to be Moscow’s last lead of the game and it didn’t last long as Bruner scored on a feed from Terran Peery to kick off what turned out to be a 15-0 run. A technical foul on a Moscow player led to 2 free throws by Bruner. Bruner then scored on a putback and Peery scored to put Prairie up 43-35 at the end of the quarter. Bruner opened the fourth quarter with a basket and 2 free throws and a blocked shot by Schlader led to a basket by Isaiah Shears that capped off the run and gave Prairie a 49-35 lead. Moscow had one last run as they outscored Prairie2-6 over the next 3 minutes but were only able to cut the deficit to 10 points. Prairie then scored the next 6 points and went on to win by 13. Bruner scored 24 to lead the scoring with Schlader adding 12. Peery and Shears scored 7 each while Hinkelman scored 6, Luke Wemhoff scored 2 and Brandon Higgins scored 1. Prairie controlled the boards 40-29 with Schlader pulling down 15 to lead the team. Bruner added 10 as each had a double-double. Higgins had 8 assists and Bruner had 5 steals. Prairie was 22 for 50 from the field, 44%, and 13 for 24 at the line, 54%. Moscow was 18 for 49 from the field, 37%, and 6 for 15 at the line, 40%. Prairie won the JV game 59-50 and lost the C game, no score available.
