Letters to the editor from this week's Chronicle:

Redneck Review
No. 43 2/15/2016
It is worth quoting again, the historical cliche, "Those who do not learn from the mistakes of the past, are doomed to repeat them." Or what about the claim, "You have to know the past, to understand the present, to predict the future?" What then is the past historical event so important in know what is going on today, and which must be recognized if one is not going to repeat old mistakes today or in the future?
Clearly, the most significant event in the past history of mankind, was the life, and death of the God-man Jesus Christ, the very basis for our calendar dating system, now 2016!
Strange it seems that not only is this person and His life and impact ignored more and more by some "experts" today, but even out right denied by very brazen "atheists." This growing acceptance of "atheism" on the one hand is closely associated with the growth of materialistic secularism on the other. The latter group may not deny Christ's existence historically today, but simply discards any impact He might have on today's civilization.
It is this secularistic attitude one finds in the current effort on the part of some historians to replace A.D., literally, "In the year of our Lord," meaning "After the birth of Christ," with the initials C.E., standing for "Common Era." Those wanting to use this new system also attempt to replace B.C, "Before Christ," with B.C. E., or "Before the Common Era."
Research on the attempt to substitute these new labels for the old clearly suggests that one of the basic reasons is to push Christ out of the picture, thus leaving mankind as the total master of his own destiny, and judge of what is right and wrong.
One who gives this situation a second thought, can see how ridiculous it really is. Also, one might ponder a bit the influence it could have on future generations which have the new labels very quietly substituted for the old! Or, one might wonder what answer a student is given who asks what event triggers the change from B.C.E to C.E.!
Denying Christ's existence and impact today, and attempting to remove Him from pages of history is bluntly an impossible task. To the unbiased mind, it is obvious! And for those who want additional evidence, tons of it are available! Here I quote just one example from nationally acclaimed author Matthew Kelly's book REDISCOVER JESUS, page 97, where he quotes atheist Lee Strobel's short article:
HOW EASTER KILLED MY FAITH IN ATHEISM!
"It was the worst news I could get as an atheist: my agnostic wife had decided to become a Christian. Two words shot through my mind. The first was an expletive; the second was 'divorce.'
"I thought she was going to turn into a self-righteous holy roller. But over the following months, I was intrigued by the positive changes in her character...Finally I decided to take my journalism … training (as legal editor of the Chicago Tribune), and … investigate … the credibility of Christianity." (He wondered, had Christ really risen from the dead?)
"As my investigation unfolded, my atheism began to buckle."
Mr. Stobel goes on to say that the claim that Christ rose from the dead, was, and could be completely verified by examining the reliability of witnesses, hundreds of them, and also the documented accounts of even secular sources at the time. He then closes his lengthy look at the facts with the statement: "And that is why I am celebrating my 30th Easter as a Christian. Not because of wishful thinking, ... but because of the facts!"
