Pirates
clinch state berth
It wasn’t the prettiest game but the Prairie Pirates survived Jake Bruner’s worst outing ever to beat Clearwater Valley 48-37 Friday, Feb. 19 at the District Tournament at the LCSC Activity Center. The win clinches a berth in the State Tournament March 3-5 at Caldwell and sets up a rematch of last year’s District Championship game against Lapwai. That game will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday,. Feb. 26 at the Activity Center. Prairie trailed 10-12 at the end of the first quarter but were able to knot the score at the half at 16-16. The third quarter proved to be the difference as Prairie took a 34-21 lead late in the quarter before C.V.’s Trey Pfefferkorn sank a half-court heave at the buzzer to make it 34-24 after 3 quarters. Prairie managed to hang on to about a 10 point lead through the fourth quarter despite losing Bruner to fouls. It didn’t hurt that C.V.’s big man, Grant Wallace, also fouled out. He had scored 11 of C.V.’s 16 first half points. When Bruner fouled out he had just 3 points. Fortunately for the Pirates several others picked up the slack as Terran Peery led the team in scoring with 10 points with Brandon Higgins and Calvin Hinkelman adding 9 each and Tyson Schlader and Hunter Chaffee 8 each. Brandon Anderson scored 1. Hinkelman and Higgins each hit big shots in the decisive third quarter that swung the game the Pirates way. Prairie is now 18-3 on the season.
