Lady
Pirates take 2nd at State
The Prairie Lady Pirates placed second at State for the second straight year as they again fell to Lapwai in the championship game. In their opener on Thursday, Feb. 18, they pulled away from a tall Valley Vikings team in the second half for a 48-25 win. On Friday, Feb. 19 they overcame a first quarter deficit to knock off Genesee for the fourth time this season, 64-52. Both those games were played at Columbia High School in Nampa. Finally on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Ford Idaho Center they lost a tough one to Lapwai 43-47. Valley stayed within 6 points until midway through the second quarter when Prairie put together a 9-0 run the opened up the lead. Hailey Danly had 2 free throws and a 3-pointer in that run and Talyss Lustig and Shayla VonBargen each added a basket. Outside of that 9-0 run, Tidwell scored Prairie’s remaining 7 points of the quarter as she had 19 at half while Valley had 18 as Prairie led 35-18 at the break. Scoring ground to a halt in the second half as Prairie outscored Valley 13-7 after the break. Prairie had their most success against Valley when they had both Lustig and VonBargen in the game at the same time. Usually Lustig spells VonBargen but when Chaye Uptmor picked up a second foul, coach Lori Mader had them both on the floor and that’s when Prairie broke it open. Angela Wemhoff scored 5 of Prairie’s 6 third quarter points but the Pirates were able to extend their lead as Valley scored just 3 in the quarter. Tidwell added a free throw for the other point. In the fourth quarter Prairie added 7 points as Danly and Uptmor each scored a basket and Tidwell hit her fourth 3-pointer of the game while Valley scored just 4 points. With a 25-point lead halfway through the fourth quarter after Tidwell’s 3, Coach Mader took the opportunity to get all the subs some playing time. Tidwell wound up with 23 points to lead all scorers, just 2 less than the entire Valley team. She was 4 for 6 from 3-point range. Wemhoff added 8 points with Danly scoring 7, VonBargen 6 and Uptmor and Lustig 2 each. Prairie held a 42-30 edge on the boards with VonBargen leading the way with 10 while Danly and Lustig each had 8. VonBargen had 5 steals and Danly had 6 assists. Prairie was 17 for 44 from the field, 39%, and 9 for 21 at the line, 43%. Valley was 8 for 47 from the field, 17%, and 9 for 12 at the line, 75%. Prairie threw some triangle and two defensively at the Bulldogs but Kaleigh Ranisate was able to get a couple of good looks and hit 6 points to help Genesee take a 4-12 lead late in the first quarter. Wemhoff fed Uptmor inside for a buzzer-beater that cut the deficit to 6. In the second quarter Lustig came off the bench and seemed to provide the spark the Pirates needed. She scored twice on putbacks and fed Uptmor for another basket as Prairie tied the score within the first 2 minutes. Wemhoff scored on an inbound feed from Danly to put Prairie ahead and Danly capped off a 10-0 run with a jumper from 16 feet. Genesee answered with a 0-6 run of their own to retake the lead. A wraparound pass from Danly to Lustig for a lay-up tied it. Genesee scored a free throw to retake the lead but VonBargen answered with a pair of free throws that gave Prairie the lead for good. Wemhoff followed with a steal and drive for a lay-up. After a Genesee basket Tidwell scored on a putback, Danly added 2 free throws and another steal by Wemhoff led to a free throw for a 27-21 lead. Genesee scored to break the run but Uptmor scored to give Prairie a 29-23 halftime lead. The third quarter belonged to VonBargen who dominated inside. In just the third quarter she connected on 5 of 6 shots and 3 of 4 free throws to help Prairie outscore Genesee 21-15 and take a 13 point lead into the fourth quarter. She had a pair of putbacks, a couple of up and under moves and a left handed shot for her 5 baskets. Fellow post Lustig was 2 for 3 from the field and Uptmor was 4 for 4 at the line. Ranisate hit a pair of 3-pointers for Genesee to help keep them in the game. The fourth quarter was all about free throws for the Pirates as they went to the line 21 times, making just 9 but that was enough to help hold off the Bulldogs and send the Pirates to a rematch with Lapwai in the championship game. VonBargen wound up with 20 points to led the scoring with Uptmor adding 13 and Lustig 11. Wemhoff scored 9, Danly 6, Tidwell 4 and Josie Peery 1. Genesee had a 35-38 edge on the boards. VonBargen and Danly each had 9 to lead the Pirates. Wemhoff had 8 steals and Danly and Tidwell had 3 assists each. Prairie was 20 for 50 from the field, 40%, and 24 for 41 at the line, 59%. Genesee was 21 for 57 from the field, 37%, and 4 for 6 at the line, 67%. Lustig scored a free throw to make it 8-9 at the end of the first quarter. Lapwai’s Koyama Young opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer. She wound up doing most of the damage for Lapwai with a game-high 25 points while normal Prairie killers Iris Domebo and Taylor Whitney were shut out in the first have and wound up with just 6 points each. Prairie answered with a 6-1 run to retake the lead at 14-13. VonBargen had a basket and a free throw, Danly had a free throw and Wemhoff scored the go-ahead basket with 5:40 left in the half. Lapwai responded though with a 0-9 run with Young scoring 6 of those 9 points. A free throw by Lustig broke the run and made it 15-22 at the half. Uptmor scored the first 5 points of the second half to get Prairie back within 2 at 20-22 but Lapwai then put together a 0-12 run that gave them their biggest lead of the game at 20-34. Young again had 6 of those points and Whitney was 4 for 4 at the line. Tidwell swished a 3-pointer to break the run. Wemhoff stole the ball and wound up converting 2 free throws. Tidwell scored another basket and Uptmor ended the quarter with a free throw that got the Pirates back within 6 at 28-34. Domebo opened the fourth quarter scoring with her first points of the game, a 3-pointer. Prairie responded with a basket by Tidwell after a steal by Danly. Tidwell then hit her second 3-pointer to get Prairie back within 4 at 33-37. Lapwai pushed the lead back to 9 as they outscored Prairie 3-8 over the next 3 plus minutes. Tidwell’s third 3 of the game cut the deficit to 6 with 50 seconds left. Domebo made the first but missed the second of 2 free throws when Wemhoff fouled out but Lustig answered with a putback to cut the deficit to 5 with 25 seconds left. Another Lapwai free throw made it a 6-point deficit with 22 seconds left. Prairie probably should have been looking for 3-pointers but Uptmor took the available shot to cut the lead to 4 with 10 seconds left and Lapwai was able to run out the clock. Tidwell wound up with 15 points to lead the Pirates in scoring with Uptmor scoring 9, Wemhoff 6, VonBargen 5 and Danly and Lustig 4 each. Rebounding was close with Lapwai holding a 48-50 edge. VonBargen had 12 to lead Prairie with Uptmor adding 10. Danly had 5 steals while Wemhoff had 4 and Wemhoff, Danly and Uptmor had 3 assists each. Prairie was 15 for 55 from the field, 27%, and 11 for 27 at the line, 41%. When you lose by 4 and miss 16 free throws, that is going to jump off the stat sheet as something that could have been done better. Prairie was 5 for 15 in the first half and 6 for 12 in the second at the line. Lapwai was 15 for 60 from the field, 25%, and 13 for 21 at the line, 62%. Lapwai’s 47 points was their lowest total of the year. Prairie gave themselves a great opportunity but too many missed free throws and too much Koyama Young cost them. Turnovers were almost even with Prairie committing 20 and Lapwai 18. Prairie ends the season with an 18-7 record. They have appeared in the state championship game 4 times in the past 5 years with 2 firsts and 2 seconds. This year’s seniors saw their team finish third, first, second and second at State.
