Pirates
split first two games
The Prairie baseball team opened their season by splitting a pair of road games. They ran into some tough pitching at Asotin in their opener and lost 2-12 then held on for a 3-2 win at Kamiah in their league opener. Asotin meanwhile pounded out 10 hits against Prairie pitching and took advantage of 3 errors for their 12 runs. Anderson started on the mound for the Pirates and gave up 2 runs in the first and 7 more in the second before giving way to Daniel Mager. Mager gave up 1 in the fourth and Spencer Schumacher took over in the fifth when Asotin scored 2 to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule. Prairie 0 0 2 0 0— 2 2 3 Asotin 2 7 0 1 2—12 10 1 Prairie had their opportunities to score a lot more than 3 runs as they left 8 runners on base with 5 of those on either second or third. Prairie pitcher Devin Bruegeman led off the game with a single but was erased on a double play when Terran Peery popped up a bunt attempt. Anderson walked and Calvin Hinkelman reached on an error but both were left on base. Bruegeman pitched a 1-2-3 first inning with a pair of strikeouts. Prairie got on the board in the second when Nick Mager hit a 2-out double to deep left field and then scored when Jake Bruner reached on an error by the second baseman. Bruegeman gave up a single and a walk to start the second inning then struck out the next two batters and got the third out on a comebacker to the mound. Prairie made it 3-0 in the third inning as Bruegeman walked to lead off the inning. Peery drew a full count walk and then both runners executed a double steal. Anderson then dropped a soft liner in front of the centerfielder to score Bruegeman with Peery moving to third. An attempted pickoff at third saw the ball get into left field with Peery scoring. Anderson got thrown out trying to advance to third on a very close play. In the bottom of the fourth Kamiah got to Bruegeman for a run with a leadoff single followed by a walk. After a strikeout and a force at second with the lead runner advancing to third, Kamiah scored with a single up the middle to cut the lead to 3-1. Prairie had a chance to score in the fifth when Peery singled and Anderson followed with a walk. Both stole to advance to third and second. Prairie then sent Anderson off second trying to draw a throw and give Peery a chance to score from third but Kamiah didn’t bite and Peery wound up getting tagged out in a rundown. In the 6th Daniel Mager singled up the middle and went to second on a wild pitch. He advanced to third on a groundout but was stranded. In the top of the seventh Peery doubled down the right field line and Anderson walked. A wild pitch advanced both runners. Hinkelman then hit a hard drive to center that looked like it might score both runners but the centerfielder was able to make the catch for the third out. In the bottom of the seventh Kamiah got 3 hits from the first 4 batters to score a run. With 2 outs Kamiah had the bases loaded with the tying run at third and the winning run at second but Bruegeman finished off his win by inducing a flyball out to end the game. Prairie had 6 hits in the game with Peery having a double and a single. Nick Mager had a double while Bruegeman, Anderson and Daniel Mager each had a single. Bruegeman gave up 9 hits, all singles, while walking 4 and striking out 9. Prairie 0 1 2 0 0 0 0—3 6 1 Kamiah 0 0 0 4 0 0 1—2 9 2
