The Prairie Community Library is so fortunate to have special support from people throughout the community. Frances Conklin and her husband have been very generous over the years with various donations and suggestions. Recently, Frances presented the library with the book titled "Season of Suffering: Coming of Age in Occupied France." Along with the book donation was a review that we would like to share with the public. This 176-page memoir, covers the WWII years lived by a French teenage girl. The reader comes to know the author’s extended family and neighbors in Nancy, France as she deftly details their lives in pre-war times and during the German occupation. Taflinger writes with fascinating candor from her perspective as a teen as well as with an understanding of the burdens experienced by the adults in her life during the war and beyond. She writes of their struggle with hunger, cold, necessary secrecy between the neighbors and friends, terror of the unknown, along with vignettes of happiness found among the hardships of survival. Through the passionate telling of her experiences, the author illustrates the consequences of war and everyone impacted by it. Her father, held captive by the Nazis for five years, is lucky to return home alive and in good physical condition to the delight of the author and her mother. Very quickly though they learn his brainwashed state puts strains on the family that are impossible to med. That dire consequence is balanced by the author’s joy to have met and fallen in love with an American, a pilot for General Patton. They marry at war’s end and Taflinger accompanies her husband to America where they eventually live out their lives in Pullman, Washington. Review and book donated by Frances Conklin,
Thank you Frances. We would invite other patrons to
submit book reviews to make the public aware of what good reading
material the library has to offer or as with Frances, if you have an exceptional
book, a review to share with the community would be great.
Dog Bark Park Last week during Story Time, Miss Pollyanna surprised the group with an Eater Party and egg hunt. All 12 children and parents participated and had a wonderful time. Her abundant food table was enjoyed by all, including the two Daddy's that brought their little ones. Folks, this is a wonderful opportunity to introduce your little people to the wonderful world of books while preparing them of their school years. We invite any and all to visit the library with you pre school children on Tuesday morning, 10:30 to 11:30. Snacks and activities are included. Children have been accompanied by their Grandparents on occasion and everyone enjoys that also. |
