tosses no-hitter
The Prairie Pirates won 2 of 3 games last week, losing a non-league game at Grangeville 5-15, Tuesday, April 19 then sweeping a league doubleheader against C.V. at Kooskia 11-0 and 11-1, Thursday, April 21. In the first game against C.V., Devin Bruegeman tossed a 5-inning no-hitter, allowing just 1 baserunner who reached on an error. 
Brandon Anderson got his first start on the mound since last year’s District Tournament and had a rough first two innings before settling down. Prairie took a brief lead in the top of the first. Jake Bruner drew a 1-out walk but was forced at second by Anderson. Calvin Hinkelman followed with a single. Dereck Arnzen then grounded to third. The third baseman probably could have tagged Anderson out but chose to avoid him and throw to first where the throw went wide. Anderson was able to score and put Prairie up 1-0. In the bottom of the inning Anderson walked 3 of the first 4 batters and they all eventually scored, one on an error and the other 2 on a 2-run double. The second inning saw Grangeville score 6 runs on an error, 4 more walks, a single and a triple. In the third Prairie got back on the scoreboard when Bruner led off with a single to right but was again forced at second by Anderson. Anderson stole second, went to third on the overthrow to second and then scored when Arnzen swung at a third strike in the dirt. The ball got past the catcher allowing Anderson to score and Arnzen to reach first. After an error and another walk to start the third, Anderson settled down and got the next 3 batters on groundouts although 2 more runs scored. Prairie scored 2 in the fourth. Jace Perrin lead off with a walk and Spencer Schumacher singled to right. Bobby Hood forced Schumacher at second but Bruegeman was walked to load the bases. A grounder by Bruner led to a forceout at home of Perrin. Anderson then doubled past the third baseman to score both Hood and Bruegeman. In the fourth Anderson allowed a 1-out double but left him stranded at third. Prairie added another run in the fifth as Daniel Mager singled to left, was moved to second on a groundout by Perrin and scored on Schumacher’s third single of the game. In the bottom of the fifth Anderson got the first batter out then ran out of gas as he walked the next two batters. Bruner came on to pitch and got a second out but then gave up a triple and a pair of walks and Grangeville was able to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule. Prairie had 7 hits in the game. Schumacher had 3 singles and an RBI. Mager had a pair of singles. Bruner had a single and Anderson had a 2-run double. Anderson allowed 13 runs on 4 hits with 10 walks and 3 strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Bruner allowed 2 runs on 1 hit with 2 walks in 1/3 of an inning. Bruegeman had 5 strikeouts, 7 ground ball outs and 3 popups to the infield. Meanwhile Prairie was able to score in every inning and ended the game in 5 innings on the 10-run mercy rule. In the top of the first Bruner beat out an infield chopper and stole second. He scored on Anderson’s double to left center. Hinkelman singled to right but Thomas Schwartz, courtesy running for Anderson, was thrown out trying to score. Hinkelman stole second and came home when Arnzen reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. In the second inning Schumacher led off with a double to center and scored on Bruegeman’s single up the middle. In the third Arnzen led off with a double, moved to third on Mager’s groundout and scored on Perrin’s groundout to second to make it 4-0. Prairie had a big inning in the fourth as 10 batters went to the plate. Hood led off with an infield hit. Bruegeman singled to left. Bruner then beat out a bunt single that loaded the bases. Anderson then doubled off the fence in left to score all three runners. Hinkelman singled to left center to score Anderson and stole second. Arnzen moved him to third with a groundout and Mager walked. A delayed double steal, where Mager broke for second, drew the throw and Hinkelman then stole home plated another run. An errant pickoff throw moved Mager to third and he scored on Schumacher’s single to left to make it 10-0. Prairie added another run in the top of the fifth as Bruegeman beat out an infield hit, stole second, moved to third on Bruner’s groundout to second and scored on Anderson’s groundout to second. Prairie wound up with 15 hits led by Bruegeman and Hinkelman with 3 singles and an RBI each. Anderson had a pair of doubles and 5 RBI. Schumacher had a double and a single and an RBI. strikeouts and 1 walk.
C.V.’s leadoff hitter singled to right, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on another single. That turned out to be it for C.V.’s offense as Schumacher allowed just 3 baserunners the rest of the way and none got past second base. Prairie meanwhile got 2 runners on in the bottom of the first but left them on base. In the second inning Prairie tied the score when Perrin doubled to right, moved to third on a passed ball and scored when Schumacher struck out on a ball in the dirt. Once the catcher threw to first to get Schumacher, Perrin came in from third. Prairie took their first lead of the game in the third with a 2-out rally. Anderson and Hinkelman both walked and Arnzen singled up the middle to score Anderson with the go-ahead run. Prairie broke it open in the fourth. Perrin led off with a single to right and Schumacher followed with a single to left. The ball got away from the fielder allowing the runners to each advance a base. Hood drew a walk to load the bases. Bruegeman hit a fly ball to left that scored Perrin. Bruner then reached on an error with Schumacher scoring and another error on the play allowed Hood to score and Bruner to make it all the way to third. Bruner then scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Anderson. Hinkelman then singled to right center and scored on Arnzen’s double to the fence in center to make it 7-1. In the bottom of the fifth Prairie was able to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule. Perrin led off with a single, his third hit of the game, but was forced at second by Schumacher. Hood followed with an infield hit. An infield hit by Bruegeman loaded the bases. Another infield hit by Bruner scored Schumacher. Anderson walked to force in another run to make it 9-1. Hinkelman then reached on an error that allowed both Bruegeman and Bruner to score and end the game. Prairie had 10 hits in the game led by Perrin with a double and 2 singles. Arnzen had a double and a single and 2 RBI. Bruner had a single and 2 RBI. Bruegeman had a single and 1 RBI. Hinkelman, Schumacher and Hood each had a single and Anderson had a pair of RBI even though he was officially 0 for 0 with 3 walks and a sacrifice fly.
