Letters to the editor from this week's Chronicle:

Redneck Review
No. 54 5/2/2016
When it comes right down to it, the basic conflict present in the world today can be traced to the difference in how each individual person is perceived. In other words, just what is the role each individual person plays in the world around him.
On the one hand, the idea which might be considered a bit old fashioned, is the belief that each person is a creature of God, bestowed with an immortal soul, with a mind that is capable of thought, and a free will which allows freedom of choice. Along with this idea is the notion that each person is responsible for his own actions and his own well being, and will be rewarded or punished in the end for how he uses these abilities. Even with no religion involved, this notion claims that each individual has an in-born idea of what is basically right and wrong, given the name down through the ages - NATURAL LAW. Those who hold to this belief are convinced that every person somehow knows that the casual taking of another's life is wrong, or that simply taking by force something from another person is a violation of that instinctive law, present in all people everywhere.
This traditional idea is found in the historical Ten Commandments, though similar codes have been found in history long before the codification of these familiar commandments.
On the other hand, the idea gaining momentum more and more in the world today, is that individual people are simply part of a human herd, that needs to be cared for much like a dairyman cares for the cows under his control. Such a notion puts power in the person or persons in control to provide for the well being of those being supervised.
The impact of these two different philosophies is plain to see wherever implemented.
The traditional idea recognizes the value of each individual, along with believing that most individuals have the ability and even the responsibility of caring for oneself. Along with this is the conviction that each individual is different, yet worthy of the respect and consideration due to a child of God with an immortal soul. That individuality means that one person might have extra ordinary talent, and thus have certain responsibilities for the good of a neighbor, whereas another may be very dependent on some one else because given little or no capacity by God Himself from birth to care for himself. To me, one only need think of the outcome of any track event, where one person only comes in first, and another last, no matter how many are involved in the event at the time.
The more modern notion is that the large majority of people depend on certain experts to provide for the good of society. Thus SOCIALISM is born in politics, where the masses are promised food at the taking, free medical care for the needy, free education for those who want it, and literally cradle to grave care for all who "need it."
In economics, the ball is put into the hands of KEYNESIAN experts who can use bank and government power to control the economy, applying the brakes to an economy which gets out of control on the up side, while using debt and money creation to stimulate one which threatens to fall into recession or depression.
In the latter cases, no dependence on a caring God is considered, or even tolerated, but all faith is put in the hands of the "experts" who somehow know what to do! Common sense says it won't work, history teaches the same, and it is not working in our country today!!

Dear Editor:
Mark Frei, is a young fellow just getting started in serving Idaho County as County Commissioner.
He is a thinker. He has some creative ideas about our troubled solid waste problem. He supports no tax raises.
He helped draft a County Natural Resource Plan that federal agencies within Idaho County must consult and take into account when taking actions and making  decisions on the federal lands with the county.
The Resource Plan stresses the responsible use of our natural resources, pro-logging/mining/grazing, for the betterment of the economy of Idaho County as well as maintaining access to all these lands for recreation.
These three items show his thinking and leadership skills. I will vote to keep him in office.
