take 3rd at State
The Prairie baseball team had a bad inning in each game against Wilder and had to settle for third place at the State Baseball Tournament held May 20-21 at Caldwell. Prairie lost their state opener to Wilder 5-6, came back to beat Horseshoe Bend 9-2 then lost again to Wilder on Saturday morning 7-8.  second
inning. Dereck Arnzen led off by reaching on an error. After an out, Jace
Perrin was hit by a pitch. Spencer Schumacher than forced Perrin at second
but Arnzen was able to score on the play when the shortstop threw the ball
away trying to get Arnzen who had rounded third.
Prairie made it 3-0 in the fourth when Arnzen hit a 1-out double. Daniel Mager followed with a great at-bat as he wound up getting walked in a 9-pitch at bat. Perrin then singled to right to score Arnzen with Mager going to third. Mager scored on Schumacher’s sacrifice fly to left. Wilder cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth without benefit of a hit. Mager, who had a no-hitter to that point, hit the leadoff batter, who then stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. A comebacker to the mound led to a run as Mager threw to first for the out. Wilder finally got their first hit in the bottom of the fifth but that runner was stranded. In the bottom of the sixth things came undone for Mager on the mound. He walked the leadoff hitter and the next two batters got infield hits with the tying run scoring on the second hit. A groundout to short led to the go-ahead run scoring. The next batter hit a dribbler down toward third that Mager fielded and threw past first base allowing another run to score. 2 more RBI singles followed as Wilder wound up with 5 runs in the inning and a 3-6 lead. In the top of the seventh Prairie tired to rally as Bobby Hood was walked on four pitches but then forced at second by Devin Bruegeman. Jake Bruner reached on an error by the second baseman. Brandon Anderson then singled to left to score Bruegeman with the runners mobbing to second and third. Calvin Hinkelman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Arnzen hit a roller back to the pitcher that led to a forceout at the plate. Mager was hit by a pitch to force in Anderson and cut the lead to 1. Perrin was then called out on strikes to end the game on a pitch that some seated behind home plate said looked low and outside. Prairie had 5 hits in the game. Arnzen had a double while Bruner, Hinkelman, Anderson and Perrin each had a single. Mager pitched all 6 innings allowing 6 runs on 5 hits with 4 walks, 1 hit batsman and 5 strikeouts. pitched the final 2 innings allowing 3 hits and 2 walks and 2 runs.
Bruegeman led off the bottom of the first with a single to left and went to second on a bad pickoff throw. He then stole third. Bruner walked and stole second. Bruegeman scored on a sacrifice fly by Anderson. Bruner scored when Hinkelman reached on an error by the shortstop to make it 2-0. In the second inning Hood beat out an infield single. With two outs Bruner singled up the middle and then the outfielder misplayed the ball, Hood was able to score. Prairie made it 5-0 in the third. Arnzen drew a 1-out walk. Mager was hit by a pitch and Schumacher drew a 2-out walk to load the bases. Hood then picked up a pair of RBI with a bloop single down the left field line that fell in between 2 fielders. The Mustangs changed pitchers in the fourth and got two quick outs. Hinkelman then reached on an error by the third baseman and stole second. Arnzen then doubled to left center to score Hinkelman and make it 6-0. Prairie made it 8-0 in the fifth when Perrin led off with a single to left. Schumacher hit what looked to be a forceout but an error left both runners safe. Bruegeman reached on an error that allowed Perrin to score and Bruner scored Schumacher on a groundout. The Mustangs finally got on the board in the top of the sixth as a leadoff infield hit and a walk both eventually scored. Prairie got one more run in the sixth as Hinkelman led off with a walk. Arnzen then reached on a fielder’s choice without an out being made. A flyball to center by Mager led to Hinkelman scoring as the defense made it a double play by getting Arnzen out at second. Bruner gave up a pair of hits to lead of the seventh but a short fly to Perrin at second led to a double play as the runner on second apparently thought it was going to drop. Bruner then ended the game with a strikeout. Prairie scored their 9 runs on just 6 hits. Hood had a pair of singles and 2 RBI. Arnzen had a double and an RBI. Prairie went to a mix and match on pitching as they tried to save their ace, Bruegeman, for Potlatch. It worked well for the first 3 innings as Mager pitched the first allowing just 1 walk with 1 strikeout before reaching his innings limit. Schumacher had 2 innings left and pitched the second and third. He gave up 3 hits and 1 run and left with a 2-1 lead. Prairie scored their 2 runs in the first as Bruegeman led off the game with a single up the middle and Bruner followed with a bunt single down the third base line. Anderson singled to right center to score both runners. Unfortunately the offense went cold until the fifth inning. In the fourth inning Bruner was sent to the mound and should have gotten out of the inning with no runs scored. However the first two runners both reached on errors and that opened the flood gates. The tying run scored on the second error. A walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases and a botched pickoff attempt led to another run. A sacrifice fly was followed by a walk, single and double. Bruner was then pulled in favor of Bruegeman who gave up a double that scored another run making it 7 in the inning for Wilder. He then got out of the inning and tossed zeroes the final two innings, getting the final 8 batters he faced out. In a 6-run hole, Prairie tried to rally back. Hinkelman reached on an error and went to second on a wild pitch. He scored on Mager’s single to right. Perrin reached on an error with Mager going to third. Prairie then executed a double steal as Perrin broke for second, drawing a throw and Mager stole home. Perrin wound up at second after the throw home. Hood then singled to left to score Perrin and cut the margin to 5-8. In the sixth Anderson was hit by a pitch in the foot to lead off the inning. Hinkelman was walked. After a pitching change the runners moved up on a wild pitch and an errant pickoff allowed Anderson to score. Arnzen then reached on an error as Hinkelman scored. Perrin was hit by a pitch and Schumacher beat out an infield hit to load the bases. Hood then lofted a fly ball to left that wound up being the play that essentially ended Prairie’s season. The fielder dropped the ball and Wilder was then able to force out Perrin at third and Schumacher at second and negate what would have been the tying run as no runs score when the final out is a forceout. Wilder then brought in their best pitcher to finish off the game. After a pair of popups to second, Anderson was hit by a pitch to put the tying run on. Hinkelman then hit a fly ball to the outfield but it was caught by the left fielder to end the game. Prairie had 9 hits in the game. Mager, Schumacher and Hood each had a pair of singles while Bruegeman, Bruner and Anderson each had a single. Prairie ends the season with a 17-7 record.
