Field Day is held
Teaching outdoors is natural for the Lewis Soil Conservation District. Getting students in the outdoors and teaching them about conservation and natural resources is something they have been doing for 44 years. The Lewis Soil Conservation District served the community by organizing and hosting the 44nd Annual Sixth Grade Field Day at Winchester Lake State Park on May 13, 2016. This youth event was enjoyed by approximately 90 6thGrade Students from Nezperce, Prairie, Kamiah and Summit Academy. The students rotate throughout eight different educational stations every 20 minutes: Soils and Geology, instructed by Eileen Rowan, Idaho Soil and Water Conservation Commission, Forestry, taught by Department of Lands staff, Dave Summer, Lowell Davis, and Brian Palmer, Air Quality, instructed by Johna Boulafentis, Nez Perce Tribe, Take Me Fishing, taught by Idaho Fish and Game, Fire Control, taught by Idaho Department of Lands staff Jed Pentzer and Devon Hadley, Life Cycle of the Salmon, instructed by Kevin Traylor, NRCS, volunteers Tiffany Sonnen and Della Sprute, Nature Trail instructed by Greg Hodapp. The favorite part of the day for the students was riding the canoes with supervision from the LSCD staff Karol Holthaus, NRCS staff Elle Kramer, volunteers Richard Sonnen, and Jinny Cash. Time keepers at the Ponderosa Point location were Anissa Holthaus and Gina Mosman. The Winchester Quick Response crew Leann Trautman, Rosemary McLeod, Jolynn Foul and Jeremy Heft were on site if needed. In appreciation to the instructors for their time and knowledge, Karol Holthaus, LSCD, prepared lunch for them. Thyra Stevenson also joined in on the learning experience. The Lewis Soil Conservation District would like to thank all the people who attended and helped with this fun, educational and beautiful sunshiny day.
