Students release fish
On May 18, the Agricultural Class from Nezperce and Highland, 4thgrade students from Highland and 7th and 8th grade studentsfrom Summit Academy completed their “Hatchery in the Classroom” program with the release of about 200 (2 to 3 inch long) steelhead into Lawyers Creek.
Prairie also participated in the program but was unable to attend that day due to their Spring concert. They will release at a time that fits their schedule.
Dworshak Fisheries, delivered 100 steelhead eggs to each classroom in March.  The classes, with the assistance of their teachers, monitored the water temperature and clarity.  When the fish eggs hatched the students took charge of feeding them in addition to the monitoring duties.
The LSCD received a grant in 2013 from the Nez Perce Tribe to purchase aquariums for the schools as part of their ongoing Information and Education programs. This hatchery project demonstrates the commitment the Lewis Soil Conservation District (LSCD) has towards improving fish habitat and water quality.
The LSCD wishes to thank Kyle Stapleton, JosetteNebeker, Danette Horrocks, Becky Higgins, Kim Frei for their vigilance in rearing the fish in their classrooms, also thank you to Jill Olson, Fish and Wildlife Service, Nez Perce Tribe and Dworshak Fisheries,  for their support in making the project such a success.
