City Council meets
The Cottonwood City Council held a special meeting Wednesday, June 15. It was a reschedule of the regular June meeting that had been set for June 13 that was cancelled due to lack of a quorum. Discussed was a partial street closure request from Kylie Riley and Catherine Richards of Hogan Street from King St. to the back end of their property for a party on June 25 that will be held from 5 to midnight. Their concern was there will be a lot of small children running around. The street could be quickly reopened if needed for emergency vehicles. Council president Ron Grant asked why they wouldn’t move to someplace larger, such as the city park, that could handle a large group. Riley said it was because they wanted to show off the improvements made to their home. City attorney Joe Wright was asked about liability and he responded not if the city orders the street close and barricades are put up. Councilor Jack Duman stated he’s inclined to grant the request since they actually came to the council with their request. He then made the motion to approve the request, which was then approved on a roll call vote. Idaho County Sheriff candidate Carlos Martinez appeared before the council and answered questions from the council about what he would look to be doing if elected. He stated he would like to spend at least one day per month in each Idaho County community. When asked about working with outside agencies he stated, we have to work with them and he would be willing to sit down and work out any issues. When asked about personnel and budgeting he said he feels the department is currently administration heavy. He would like to drop the Undersheriff position and put that funding toward another deputy. He said that they also need to do something about the jail In reports Duman said the work is getting started on East St. Grinding will be done about July 17 with a first shot done soon after and the second just prior to the Fair. Mag chloride application will also be done soon. Grant reported they had 1 fire call in the past month, a rural fire with a house involved. Four proposals were received for the janitorial contract. One was for $595 per month. There were two others at $600 per month and a fourth for $800 per month. Unlike the bidding process, you don’t have to take the low bidder. Council members stated they would like to have had mayor and land and buildings commissioner Shelli Schumacher’s input. Eventually Duman made a motion to accept Josh Lustig’s proposal of $595 per month. Grant moved to accept another proposal. Pat Holthaus broke the tie by seconding Duman’s motion. All three then voted to approve Duman’s motion. A resolution to allow reserved tiedowns at the airport for $50 per month was discussed. Denis Duman was present to give input. He said they normally have 3 public tiedowns which are normally free to use. 5 more have been recently added with 3 in the grass and 2 near where the fuel tanks used to be. They currently have two requests pending, both due to the special situation of the Idaho County Airport having their runway resurfaced with smokejumper planes using Cottonwood’s airport instead. The resolution was needed as the city code had nothing in place regarding reserving airport tiedowns. Resolution 2016-3 was approved by the council. The Suddenlink cable TV franchise was discussed. Suddenlink terminated their service May 31 and have been working to remove all their wiring and equipment. They asked to be released from their lease agreement which runs through 2023. They have already paid their 2016 lease payment. The council passed a motion to release Suddenlink from their lease agreement at the end of 2016. A motion was made and passed to approve Riedesel as the engineer for the sidewalk grant work with Ron Grant authorized to sign it in the absence of the mayor. The council meeting adjourned at 8:07 p.m. The next regular meeting will be Monday, July 11 at 7 p.m. Spring Cleanup rolloff still available The City of Cottonwood still has the rolloff available near the city shop for use in disposal of yard waste and tree and hedge cuttings and inert material generated through spring cleaning through the end of June. It saves you a trip out to one of the dumpster sites and is available at no cost. Be sure you take only inert waste and yard waste, no household trash or garbage. |
