School Board approves track bid
Valley Paving’s bid to do the asphalt layer on the track was approved at the July meeting of the school board, Monday, July 18.
Valley Paving’s bid was the only one received in the rebidding process. It was for $137,692.60 with an in-kind donation that would drop the net bid to $100,635.60. Tom Riener, representing Valley Paving, said the original bid specifications did not allow for offering an in-kind donation. The bid also includes asking for 1/3 of the money up front and two annual payments of the other 2/3, a condition added in the rebidding process.
Riener will visit with school maintenance man Jake Forsmann about getting the prep stuff done so they can get started.
Ryan Hasselstrom was asked where they are with the fundraising. Hasselstrom said they were awarded a $10,000 grant by the tribe and the “Run Around the World” fundraiser has $25,000 pledged. They will find out August 20 how much of that comes through. He said they have about $90,000 so far.
As the board moved to new business they had all the annual meeting items to address.
Officers will remain the same. Gus Hoene as chairman and Pat Alfrey as vice chairman were re-elected with Denise Uhlenkott as clerk treasurer and Cheri Holthaus and Lynn Rehder as assistant treasurers.
Meeting dates and times will remain the same: Third Monday of the month with the meeting time set at 7 p.m. from May through September and 5:30 p.m. from October to April.
Check signers will also remain the same: Hoene, Alfrey and Uhlenkott, with at least two signatures required.
Hot lunch prices will go up. Students 10 cents each and adults 25 cents. Elementary lunches will be $1.95, jr./sr. high $2.45 and adults $4.50.
Bus rental rates will remain the same at $3.50 per mile.
Per diem rates will also remain the same as last year: $7 for breakfast, $9 for lunch and $13 for dinner with a $25 maximum per day.
Facility use rates will also stay the same as last year.
In other business Scot Schlader was approved as assistant boys basketball coach.
Michelle Bledsoe was approved for the full time special education teacher. Rene’ Forsmann said she feels this is a great hire.
Dave Remacle was approved as the bus driver for what used to be Becky Madden’s route.
Extra curricular assignments were approved for the upcoming school year. They are mostly the same as last year with the main changes coming in the boys basketball coaching positions.
A bus pay request form was discussed for overnight trips. Pay for the bus driver would rise from $80 to $125. The rest would stay the same.
The Idaho Distance Learning Academy policy was discussed. The administration wants to emphasize that for core classes students must take them from the on-site teacher unless they can prove there is a scheduling conflict or for credit recovery of a failing grade. This was the first reading for this policy and it will be reviewed again at the next meeting.
Another first reading was for high school graduation requirements. The state removed the necessity of passing the ISAT to graduate and changed that to participate in the ISAT. This necessitates changing portions of the district’s policy.
Section 3 of the policy manual was also reviewed with more action taken next month.
In the facilities update the bus barn/shop is moving along well with most of the building structure to be done by the end of the week. Electrical will take a little longer but it should be finished by the August 31 target date.
The high school office renovation is nearly done with some minor details to finish.
The flooring on the elementary steps has been replaced.
The Brownsfield cleanup grant for the old Elementary School will be rewritten by CEDA and resubmitted.  It is felt they have a great chance for approval this time.
The T12/8 fluorescent lamps have all been replaced with LED 16-23 watt tube lamps in the Elementary School with about 500 left to go in the jr./sr. high school. A total of 2,478 lamps will be replaced. They get $10 per lamp reimbursed from Avista with a cost of $8.25 each.
Finally, the serve out counter in the high school cafeteria will be replaced by Pacific Cabinets, Inc. The old one will be taken out next week and the project should be done either late July or early August.
In final business, Forsmann reported they had some high school checks stolen from the printer in the office. Some were already cashed but a stop payment order has been put on the rest. The school will not be liable for the amount already spent. This matter is currently under investigation.
The meeting adjourned at 8:48 p.m. The next regular meeting will be Monday, August 15 at 7 p.m.
