School
board meets
Bus routes were approved for the 2016-17 school year at the August school board meeting held Monday, August 15. The approved bus routes are printed below. The board also approved several policies that were introduced at the July meeting. They are the Idaho Distance Learning policy, the high school graduation requirements and section 3 of the policy manual. The main thrust of the IDLA policy was that students are to take the regular classroom class if possible, using IDLA only if scheduling conflicts make it impossible to take the regular class, or to make up a failed class. The main change in the high school graduation requirements is to drop passing the ISAT to graduate as the state no longer requires that. All of the above policies are, or will be, available on the school district website. In new business the board approved the district and school handbooks. These are also available online. The elementary and high school schedules were also approved. Discussed and approved were the Child Internet Protection Act regulations. Students use of school district device access is controlled as well as possible. When asked about personal devices such as smartphones, Carrie Nygaard said junior high students will not be allowed their use during the day. High school students haven’t been that restricted yet but some teachers have students check in their phones before class starts and get them back afterwards. The district’s back to school meeting will be held Monday, August 22. In the facilities update Rene’ Forsmann reported the bus barn is nearing completion. The track and field project is progressing well. It looks like the asphalt will go on about August 29. All the old T12/8 fluorescent lamps in the two buildings have been replaced. 2,528 new LED 16-23 watt lamps have been installed. The high school office upgrade has been completed and the high school cafeteria serve out counter should be completed this week. In her administration report Forsmann said summer school has finished as have swimming lessons. At the July meeting she reported that some checks had been stolen at the high school. The Chronicle was asked not to report on that as law enforcement didn’t want to warn the suspects they knew about it. Forsmann reported they actually had the incident on video. They had checked the video prior to the July meeting but the incident actually occurred prior to when they thought it had. Carrie Nygaard reported registration went very well. All fall sports are up and going. School pictures will be taken Sept. 1 for grades 7-12. The first fall testing will begin on Sept. 6 for grades 7-8. This is to gauge the needs for students. A dual credit/advanced opportunities meeting will be held Sept. 7 at 5:30 p.m. for all students and parents in grades 7-12. The FAFSA meeting has been moved up from January to October 12. This is for all seniors and their parents who plan to apply for financial aid to college. The meeting adjourned at 7:48 p.m. 2016-2017 School Bus Routes Ferdinand – David Shears—Bus #06-6, 6:50 a.m.—Jared Schwartz, Mike Duclos, Toby Schwartz, John Frei, Ferdinand South, Ferdinand Church, Nick Frei, Cody Funke, Ken Ross, Christopher Frei, Joe VonBargen.
