Pirates
rally to win opener
The Prairie Pirates started slowly but came on strong in the second half for a 40-18 White Pine League win over Genesee in their opener Thursday, Sept. 1 at Cottonwood. The game, originally scheduled for Friday, Sept. 2, got moved up to Thursday due to lack of officials on Friday. Prairie received the opening kickoff and had to punt after 3 plays. Genesee took over at their own 13 and drove to the Prairie 34 before stalling. Brandon Anderson made successive plays in the backfield to stop the drive. He tackled running back Garrett Borth for a 7 yard loss and then sacked quarterback Kyle Moser for a 15 yard loss on fourth down with Prairie taking over at the Genesee 44. The Pirates were able to move the ball down to the 10 before a fourth down fumble gave Genesee the ball back. Genesee then proceeded to move the ball down the field for the game’s first points as Borth covered the final 18 yards for a touchdown. Prairie stopped Borth on the 2-point try as Genesee led 0-6 early in the second quarter. After a trade of possessions, Prairie took over at their own 25. On third and 7 Anderson made a fingertip grab of a pass from Tyson Schlader and went 27 yards to the Genesee 45. On the next play Luke Wemhoff made a cut to the left, found an opening and went 45 yards for the touchdown that tied the score. Jake Stubbers then ran in the 2-pointer to give Prairie an 8-6 lead. Genesee tried to answer back and got into Pirate territory before fumbling the ball away with Wemhoff recovering at the Prairie 30. Prairie was unable to move the ball and with about 3 minutes left in the half, went from it on fourth and 11 from their own 29. The pass went awry and Genesee took over. A pass interference penalty against the Pirates set Genesee up at the 14 and 3 plays later Moser went in from the 1 for the touchdown that put Genesee back on top 8-12. Prairie again stopped the 2-point try. That’s where the score stood at the half. Prairie kicked off to start the second half and 20 yards worth of penalties set Genesee up with a first and 5 at the Prairie 49. The defense rose up though and forced an incomplete pass on fourth down as Prairie took over at their own 40. It took just 1 play to retake the lead as Wemhoff went over the right side, got some great blocking and broke into the secondary, outracing the defense for a 60 yard touchdown run. Anderson ran in the 2-pointer to give Prairie a 16-12 lead. Genesee picked up a first down then wound up having to punt with Prairie taking over at their own 33. Wemhoff had another big run, this one for 30 yards that put the ball on the Genesee 26. 4 plays later Spencer Schumacher, who played quarterback the entire second after splitting time with Schlader in the first half, went over from the 4 for the touchdown. Wemhoff added the 2-pointer to make it 24-12. Genesee came right back with a 7-play 56 yard drive for a touchdown as Moser passed to Borth for 14 yards and the score. Prairie again stopped the 2-point try leaving Genesee still trailing at 24-18. The Pirates answered back with an 11-play drive in hurry-up offense mode that had the Genesee defense on their heels. There were 9 runs and 2 passes with Hunter Chaffee catching both passes for a total of 24 yards, including the final 8 when he was wide open in the end zone. Schumacher passed to Schlader for the 2-pointer to make it 32-18. Down two scores Genesee all but abandoned the running game and Moser, who completed 8 of his first 16 attempts, suddenly couldn’t find the range anymore. Of course the Prairie pass rush may have had something to do with that. At one point Moser misfired on 12 straight pass attempts and only completed 3 of his final 22 attempts. One of those attempts accounted for Prairie’s final points of the game as Anderson picked off a Moser pass at the Prairie 40 and took it all the way back for a touchdown. Schumacher then passed to Caleb McWilliams for the 2-pointer to make it 40-18. Prairie outscored Genesee 32-6 in the second half. For the game Genesee outgained the Pirates by 2 yards but Prairie had a 166-106 in the second half. Most of that for Prairie came in the third quarter as neither team was able to generate any offense in the fourth quarter. Wemhoff wound up with 165 yards on 15 carries with 2 touchdowns. Anderson added 20 yards on 6 carries and Stubbers 23 yards on 12 carries as Prairie totaled 202 yards on 46 attempts rushing. Schumacher completed 4 of 12 passes for 39 yards while Schlader was 1 for 6 with an interception for 27 yards. Prairie had 268 yards of offense in the game. Borth gained 115 yards on 22 carries for Genesee with Moser adding 37 on 17 carries as Genesee had 160 yards rushing on 46 attempts. Moser was 12 for 39 passing with an interception for 110 years. Punter Jake Dermeerleer was 0 for 1 on a fake punt play. Genesee had 270 yards of offense. Anderson led the defense with 18 tackles, 4 for loss, and an interception for a touchdown. Schumacher had 7 tackles, 1 for loss. Jayce Huling had 6.5 tackles, 1 for loss. Raice Dalgliesh had 6 tackles. McWilliams had 5.5 tackles, 1 for loss. Wemhoff had 5 tackles. Stubbers and Schlader had 3 tackles each and Carson Schmidt had 1 tackle. Prairie is now 1-0 on the season and in league play.
