Lady
Pirates lose twice
It was a tough week for the Lady Pirates as they had to travel to two of the toughest places to win a volleyball match in the White Pine League, Genesee and Troy. They lost a 4-game match at Genesee Tuesday, August 30 and then lost in straight sets at Troy Thursday, Sept. 1. Prairie jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening game as Mykaela McWilliams scored on both a block and a tip while Madison Pecarovich served up an ace for the other point. Genesee came back to make it close and then took the lead for good with a 5-point run that turned a 12-12 tie into a 12-17 deficit for the Pirates. Prairie twice got back within 2 at 15-18 and 17-19 but Genesee then finished the game off. In the second game Prairie fell behind early at 0-3, 1-5 and 2-10. Chaye Uptmor scored a kill and McWilliams followed with 2 aces to cut the lead to 5. Prairie again fell behind by 6 at 8-15. They were able to rally back within 1 with Leah Higgins serving. She served a a pair of aces and McWilliams spiked one off a Genesee block for a point to cut the lead to 17-18. After 4 straight sideouts Angela Wemhoff took over on the service line. Uptmor scored on a tip to tie the game at 20. Higgins and Nicole Poxleitner each followed with a kill. Uptmor slammed one back on first touch and Wemhoff served an ace to get to 24-20. After Genesee got a sideout to end the run, Poxleitner scored a kill on a set from Wemhoff for the game winner. Prairie jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the third game but Genesee came back to take an 8-9 lead. Genesee then built a lead as they led by as many as 6 at 12-17. Prairie still trailed at 18-22 when Higgins scored a kill to send Sydney Bruner to the service line. McWilliams scored a kill and Bruner served consecutive aces to tie the score at 22-22. Genesee then called a timeout and that apparently threw off the rhythm Bruner had as her next serve sailed long. Genesee was then able to score the next 2 points for a 1 game to 2 lead. The fourth game was very similar to the third. Genesee led early on, once by as many as 6 at 9-15. Higgins then served 5 straight points, including 3 aces as Prairie tied it at 15. Prairie finally took the lead on a kill by Josie Peery that made it 18-17. Prairie did not lead again until Bruner jump served an ace to make it 21-20. McWilliams scored on a tip to make it 22-20 when Genesee called another timeout. Again Bruner’s serve was disrupted as she served another one long. Prairie got the serve right back this time as McWilliams stuffed a Genesee spike. Genesee got the sideout though and were then able to serve out the match. For the match Uptmor had 18 kills, 3 assists and 2 aces. McWilliams had 12 kills including 2 stuffs plus 1 assist and 6 aces. Higgins had 10 kills, 2 assists and 6 aces. Wemhoff had 9 kills, 17 assists and 3 aces. Pecarovich had 1 kill, 28 assists and 3 aces. Peery had 4 kills. Poxleitner had 2 kills. Bruner had 1 kill, 1 assist and 5 aces. Prairie lost all 3 games in the JV match, 19-25, 26-28 and 5-15. They fell behind 0-5 in the opening game but battled back to tie the game at 9 and again at 10. They then dropped 6 straight points and never got closer than 3 at 19-22, the rest of the game. In the second game Kristyna Krogh served 2 aces for a 2-0 lead. An ace by Sabrina Lustig and 2 kills by Jordyn Higgins had Prairie up 7-2. Genesee then got 8 straight points to take the lead. They led by as many as 7 at 10-17 before Prairie fought back. Anna Vinsova had a 4-point service run to cut the lead to 2 at 15-17. She had 2 aces while Lustig added a kill. A kill and then an ace by Higgins finally tied the score at 23-23. After a kill by Krogh, Vinsova served an ace to give Prairie a game-point chance at 25-24. She missed her serve and Prairie would score only 1 more point as Genesee pulled out the win. In the third game Genesee jumped out to a 1-7 lead and finished up the game with 5 straight points. Genesee also won all three games of the C match 25-27, 21-25, 7-15. At Troy In the match at Troy Thursday, Sept. 1, Prairie was swept 12-25, 13-25 and 21-25 as it was too much Abby Blum. Blum recorded 24 kills for the Trojans who look like they could dominate the league this year. Prairie is now 1-2 in league play and 2-6 overall. The JV team beat Troy 2 games to none.
