Summit Academy’s Patriots split a pair of home league matches this past week as they outlasted Nezperce in 5 games on Tuesday, Sept. 6 before getting swept by Logos on Thursday, Sept. 8. Nezperce came out strong in the opening game as they took leads of 6-14 and 10-17 before Summit fought their way back. Summit rallied back to tie the game at 18-18 with freshman Lexi Currier serving. She had 2 aces while Ally Sonnen added a pair of kills in a 4-points run. A Nezperce timeout led to a missed serve but a block by Sonnen tied it and then Sonnen served 3 straight points which included 2 aces for a 22-19 lead. Nezperce answered back though and was able to outscore Summit 1-6 the rest of the way to win the game. In the second game Summit tailed 2-4 early but then bounced back behind 3 aces from Taylor Lustig to take an 8-5 lead. Currier had another 4 point run with 2 aces plus 2 kills by Sonnen to make it 14-7. Sonnen served up 3 aces for a 17-8 lead and Summit was able to thwart any Nezperce comeback attempts as they wound up winning the game by 8. In the third game Summit trailed only once at 1-2. A missed Nezperce serve gave Summit the lead for good at 4-3. Bridget Beckman served 3 winners to put Summit up 13-6 and then the game settled into both teams siding out the other’s serve. Nezperce had a couple more service points than Summit as they got within 4 at 22-18. A kill by Sonnen then put Lustig on the service line for 2 aces that ended the game and put Summit up 2 games to 1. Summit looked to end the match in 4 games as Lucy Osborne served them to a 3-0 lead with 2 aces. Nezperce came back to tie at 4 and 7 before Currier served the Patriots to a 14-7 lead with 3 aces plus 3 kills by Sonnen, one of which was a block. Nezperce turned things around though and came back with a 1-10 run that put them on top 15-17. Summit briefly took back the lead at 18-17 but Nezperce answered with 3 straight points to take the lead for good. In the final game Lustig scored a kill to open the game and then Osborne served 2 winners to make it 3-0. Kayla Rehder served 2 aces for a 6-1 lead but Nezperce came back to tie the game at 6-6. After 2 sideouts left the score still knotted at 7-7, Sonnen scored on a kill to the corner and Currier took over at the service line. Currier served 6 straight with 2 aces and 4 kills by Sonnen to get Summit to match point at 14-7. Nezperce was able to fight off 2 match points before Sonnen scored the kill to end it. For the match Sonnen had 35 kills which included 4 blocks plus 6 aces. Lustig had 15 kills, 3 assists and 7 aces. Currier had 2 kills, 44 assists and 12 aces. She was the server for 23 total points. Rehder had 5 kills and 4 aces. Osborne had 2 kills, 1 assist and 4 aces. Beckman had 1 kill and 2 aces. Summit is now 3-2 in league play and overall.
