Pirates
win big at Council
The Prairie football teamed rolled to an easy 42-0 win at Council Friday, Sept. 16, scoring all their points in the first half. Prairie picked up big yardage on crossbuck runs as well as on the option. The game did not start out the best as Luke Wemhoff returned the opening kickoff 41 yards only to fumble it away at the end. Council fumbled the ball right back though on their second play with Jayce Huling recovering at the Prairie 49. Wemhoff picked up 27 yards on a crossbuck to the left to move the ball deep into Council territory. Two plays later Spencer Schumacher connected with Caleb McWilliams on a swing pass to the left for 16 yards. Schumacher then found Hunter Chaffee wide open in the end zone for the touchdown. Schumacher passed to Chaffee again for the 2 pointer on basically the same play just to the other side. Council fumbled the ball away again on their next possession with Caleb McWilliams recovering the ball at the Prairie 40. After a false start penalty Prairie ran the option and it fooled the referee who blew his whistle on the fake fullback dive into the line while Schumacher was about to toss the ball to Wemhoff out on the left side. Prairie got to run the play over again and Chaffee caught a pass for a 15 yard gain and a first down. A 6 yard run by Wemhoff and a pass completion for 7 yards over the middle to Stubbers led to another first down. On third and 1 from the 28 Schumacher kept the ball on the option and picked up 22 yards to set up first and goal at the 6. Wemhoff took it in for the touchdown on the next play. Schumacher again passed to Chaffee for the 2-pointer to make it 16-0. Council put together a drive on their next possession thanks to a 50 yard run by senior J.T. Mahon. 3 straight penalties where a player lined up offside killed the drive though and Council wound up punting from the Prairie 44. Huling rushed through and blocked the punt with Prairie taking over on the Council 46. Wemhoff ran a crossbuck to the right and went 46 yards for a touchdown on the next play. The 2-point try failed but Prairie still ed 22-0. On the ensuing kickoff Prairie executed an onside kick with Carson Schmidt recovering the ball at the Council 44. Schumacher picked up 15 yards on the option to the right on the first play and then found McWilliams open over the middle on a crossing pattern for 29 yards and another Prairie touchdown. Again the 2-point try failed as Prairie upped their lead to 28-0. Council was able to move the ball down to the Prairie 20 before another couple of false start penalties stopped them as Prairie took over at the 25. Schumacher converted a fourth and 2 with a 22 yard gain on an option to the left. Two plays later Schumacher ran the option again but this time pitched the ball to Wemhoff who went 45 yards for the touchdown. Wemhoff then went in untouched for the 2-pointer to make it 36-0. Council came up short on fourth down on their next possession and Prairie took over at the Council 49. Wemhoff had a couple of big plays in the drive as he caught a pass over the middle for 17 yards and 3 plays later took an option pitch to the right for 19 yards and the touchdown to make it 42-0. The new mercy rule this year puts the game in running clock mode at any point in the game that one team leads by at least 40. Thus the clock ran during the failed 2-point try. The entire second half was under a running clock and both teams sent their JV squads in to play. There was no scoring in the second half although Devin Ross did complete a 19 yard pass to Sam Mager. Ross wound up getting hurt on a fumble play that saw Council get penalized for a late hit. With no other quarterback available Schumacher went back in for Ross. Wemhoff wound up with 157 yards on 9 carries to lead the offense. Schumacher added 69 yards on 5 carries while Owen Anderson and Derik Shears each had 19 yards on 5 carries and McWilliams had 12 yards on 3 carries. Prairie had 273 yards rushing on 32 attempts. Schumacher was 6 for 10 passing for 88 yards. Ross was 1 for 3 with an interception for 19 yards. Shears was 0 for 1 on a throwback pass attempt to Schumacher. McWilliams caught 2 passes for 45 yards. Chaffee caught 2 for 19. Mager caught 1 for 19. Wemhoff caught 1 for 17 and Stubbers caught 1 for 7. Prairie had 380 yards of offense. Mahon had 72 yards on 10 carries for Council with Zane Paradis adding 57 yards on 10 carries and Emmitt Hileman 34 on 3 carries. Hileman was 0 for 2 passing and JV quarterback Brandon Nichols was 1 for 2 for 1 yard. Council had 208 yards of offense, 207 rushing on 36 attempts. Huling led the defense with 6 tackles plus a blocked punt and fumble recovery. Owen Anderson had 4½ tackles. McWilliams had 4 tackles and a fumble recovery and Stubbers also had 4 tackles. Garrett Bunce and Wemhoff each had 3 tackles. Perrin, Chaffee and Reid Uptmor had 2 tackles each. Schmidt and Damian Forsmann had 1½ tackles each. Schumacher, Shears and Hayden Uhlenkott had 1 tackle each and Tucker Hibbard had ½ a tackle. Prairie is now 2-1 on the season.
