Pirates win 1, lose 2
The Prairie Lady Pirates played 3 volleyball matches this past week. They won their lone league match in 3 games against C.V. and lost a pair of non-league matches to Orofino and Grangeville. Prairie started slowly as they didn’t take their first lead until leah Higgins scored a kill that made it 8-7. The game stayed close as C.V. tied it for the last time at 17-17. They missed a serve to put Prairie ahead for good and Mykaela McWilliams took over at the service line. Chaye Uptmor stuffed a C.V. spike attempt to start the run. McWilliams then served 5 straight aces before Angela Wemhoff scored the game-ending kill. Prairie jumped out to leads of 4-1 and 8-3 in the second game but C.V. rallied to tie the score at 8-8. C.V. then managed to take the lead at 12-14 and 13-15. Prairie finally took the lead for good on an ace by Sydney Bruner. A kill by Wemhoff and another ace made it 18-15. After 4 straight sideouts, Uptmor took over at the service line and served out the game. Wemhoff had a kill, Uptmor an ace, Madison Pecarovich a kill and Higgins 2 kills to end the game. The third game was close until McWilliams took her turn at the service line. She took over at 5-3 after a bricked C.V. serve and served 6 straight points. She had 3 aces while Uptmor had 2 kills and Higgins had the other kill. Prairie led 15-5 when Wemhoff took her turn at the line and that was it for C.V. as Wemhoff served the final 10 points of the match. 8 of the 10 points were aces with Higgins and Sam Remacle each adding a kill. Higgins had 12 kills including a block in the match. Uptmor had 10 kills including a block plus 12 assists and 3 aces. Wemhoff had 5 kills and 8 aces. Bruner had 3 kills and 4 aces. The JV team won all three of their games against C.V. by scores of 25-9, 25-11 and 15-5. The first game started with 2 missed serves by each side. Sabrina Lustig was the first to put a serve in play and scored an ace. She added 2 more service points with Jordyn Higgins and Alexis Hiler each scoring a kill for a 5-2 lead. Prairie steadily built their lead as C.V. missed their first 5 serving attempts before finally getting one in play. Prairie led 18-9 when Higgins scored a kill to put Theresa Wemhoff on the service line. C.V. never got the serve back as Wemhoff finished the game with 6 straight. Hiler and Higgins each had 2 kills while Kristyna Krogh and Madison Hinkelman each added a kill. C.V. served an ace to start the second game but that was to be their only lead. They missed the next serve and Krogh then served 8 straight points, 6 of them aces. Hiler scored a pair of kills for the other 2 points as Prairie took a 9-1 lead. Hiler later served 3 straight aces while Wemhoff had 4 out of 4 serves as Prairie built a 20-4 lead before coasting to a 14 point win. Brooklyn Riener started off the third game with 6 straight aces before C.V. finally scored a sideout. Lustig added 3 aces while Higgins added 2 for the final 2 points of the match. Prairie trailed for much of the one game they won as they were down 5-9 and 13-17. A double hit violation against Orofino put Wemhoff on the service line and that’s when the game turned around. 2 aces by Wemhoff and a kill by Uptmor tied the game at 17-17. 2 more aces plus a kill by Pecarovich put Prairie up 20-17. Orofino got back within 1 at 20-19 before a kill by Uptmor put Higgins on the service line. Consecutive stuff blocks by McWilliams and a kill by Bruner made it 24-19 and McWilliams then won a joust at the net for the game winner. The second game saw no points on serve scored until Orofino scored to make it 4-6. Prairie never led in the game as they did not score a point while serving until McWilliams served an ace that made it 9-13. A kill by Wemhoff, another ace and a kill by Higgins cut the deficit to 12-13 but Orofino got the sideout and that was as close as Prairie would get as Orofino pulled away for a 7-point win. In the third game Prairie quickly fell behind 1-8 in another game that they never led. They were able to get back within 2 at 8-10 on 2 aces by Uptmor and a free ball kill by Pecarovich and later on got within 1 at 18-19 on a kill by Higgins but otherwise Orofino held them off. Prairie was able to lead in the fourth game, but only at 2-1 after an ace by Bruner. Orofino then scored the next 7 points to take control Prairie never got any closer than 4 the rest of the way at 17-21 and again at 20-24. Prairie led big in the first game but let Grangeville rally back to force Prairie to tie at 24-24 and 25-25 before falling. The Bulldogs used that momentum to carry them into the next game.
