Pirates
win big over C.V.
The Prairie football team rolled to a 66-26 win over Clearwater Valley to improve to 2-0 in league play Friday, Sept. 23 at Cottonwood. Prairie scored the first 5 times they had the ball in the game while C.V. scored only once in that span as they built a 30-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 38-6 after their fifth possession. C.V. tried an onside kick to open the game with Carson Schmidt recovering for Prairie at the 48. The Pirates needed just 6 plays to score their first touchdown. Luke Wemhoff had a 21 yard gain. Spencer Schumacher then completed two passes for gains of 12 yards each to Brandon Anderson and Jake Stubbers. The second set up a first and goal at the 2 and Schumacher went into the middle for the touchdown. Wemhoff ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0 just 55 seconds into the game. C.V. was forced to punt on their first possession and Schumacher blocked the punt giving Prairie the ball at the C.V. 16. Schumacher then scored on the next play as he kept the ball on the option. Wemhoff again ran in the 2-pointer to make it 16-0. Jayce Huling tipped away a fourth down pass attempt on C.V.’s next possession with the Pirates taking over at the C.V. 39. After a 10 yard run by Schumacher, he passed deep over the middle to Hunter Chaffee who caught the ball at the goal line for a third Pirates touchdown on a 29 yard play. Schumacher passed to a wide-open Brandon Anderson for the 2-pointer to make it 24-0. C.V. finally got on the scoreboard on their next possession as Try Pfefferkorn broke loose for 29 yards on a wingback reverse that made it 24-6 as Prairie stopped the 2-point try. The Rams tried another onside kick but Caleb McWilliams picked up the ball at the 50 and took it to the C.V. 45. Prairie needed 8 plays to add another touchdown. Anderson picked up 13 on a pitch to the right for one first down and then caught a pass from Schumacher for 18 yards and another first down that set Prairie up at the 11. Anderson gained 5 on a run to the right then Schumacher passed to McWilliams for another 5 yards that came up just short of a first down at the 1. Anderson went up the middle for the touchdown on the next play.. This time the 2-point try failed but Prairie led 30-6 with 2:31 still left in the first quarter. C.V. was forced to punt and this time got the punt away as it rolled dead at the Prairie 27. Pass completions of 22 yards to Anderson and 25 yards to Stubbers moved the ball to the C.V. 23. Wemhoff gained 9 yards on a crossbuck with Schumacher adding 8 around left end for a first and goal at the 6. Wemhoff scored on the next play and Schumacher added the 2-pointer to make it 38-6 just a minute into the second quarter. C.V. then put together a drive that was helped by 30 yards in Pirate penalties, neither of which appeared to be a good call. Chaffee got flagged for a personal foul after the C.V. receiver took him out on an incomplete pass. Apparently all the referee saw was a bit of retaliation by Chaffee. Several plays later Prairie got called for a pass interference when both players appeared to be going for the ball. Both penalties got C.V. out of third and long situations but even after all that they barely got across midfield before fumbling the ball away with Chaffee recovering at the Prairie 49. Prairie moved the ball down to the C.V. 14 before coming up short on a fourth and 3 play. C.V. took over and right away got a 46 yard run out of Zach Krieger. They kept the ball on the ground and moved their way downfield from there with Krieger going in from the 3 for the touchdown. Chaffee deflected the 2-point pass to keep the score at 38-12. C.V. kicked the ball deep this time and Jace Perrin returned the ball 10 yards to the Prairie 32. Schumacher picked up 16 yards on a pair of runs and then found Wemhoff wide open at the C.V. 25. Wemhoff then put a great fake on a C.V. defender as he broke free for the touchdown on a 52 yard scoring play that made it 44-12 as the 2-point try again came up short. That was the score at the half. C.V. received the second half kickoff and a fumble on third down that led to an 11 yard loss led to a C.V. punt. Prairie took over at their own 36 and marched downfield. Schumacher passed to Chaffee in the end zone for the final 28 yards and the touchdown. Schumacher then passed to McWilliams for the 2-pointer that gave the Pirates a 52-12 lead and clicked in the mercy rule of a running clock the rest of the way. C.V. put together a scoring drive as quarterback Mitchel Morrow was 3 for 3 for 46 yards on the drive including the final 11 to Pfefferkorn for the touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter. C.V. kicked off and prairie took over at their own 43 and needed just 2 plays to answer C.V.’s score. Schumacher picked up 21 yards on a keeper and Wemhoff then found a hole through the middle and went 36 yards for the touchdown. Michael Schwartz ran in the 2-pointer to make it 60-18. C.V. turned the ball over on downs after missing a fourth down pass and Prairie took over at the C.V. 41. 5 plays later Schumacher scored from the 4 to make it 66-18. C.V. answered with 1 final score against the JV defense as Pfefferkorn caught a pass for 43 yards and the score. C.V. then added their only 2-point conversion of the game to make the score 66-26. Anderson returned the ensuing kickoff 24 yards to the C.V. 41 and then picked up 19 yards to the C.V. 22. Schumacher then dropped to a knee on consecutive plays to run out the clock. Wemhoff picked up 116 yards on 10 carries in the game while Schumacher gained 94 on 15 carries. Anderson added 57 yards on 8 carries in his first game back after sitting out the Council game and most of the Salmon River game with an injury. Prairie had 281 yards rushing on 36 attempts. Schumacher completed 12 of 18 passes for 223 yards. Chaffee caught 4 for 69 and Anderson caught 4 for 60. Stubbers caught 2 for 37 with Wemhoff catching 1 for 52 and McWilliams 1 for 5. For C.V. Krieger had 84 yards on 14 carries and Pfefferkorn 58 on 9 carries. Morrow was 7 for 15 for 107 yards. McWilliams led the team in tackles with 8 with Huling right behind with 7. Wemhoff had 6½. Chaffee had 6 and a fumble recovery. Anderson had 5½. Stubbers had 4. Schumacher had 3 and a blocked punt. Perrin had 2½. Schmidt had 1½. Sam Mager, Tucker Hibbard and Derik Shears each had 1.
