Pirates rout Kubs
The Prairie football team stayed unbeaten in league play with a 66-20 win at Kamiah Friday, Sept. 30.
The game had nowhere near the electricity, nor the crowd that last year’s game, which decided the league championship, had.Jayce Huling and Brandon Anderson wrap up a Kamiah ballcarrier.
Prairie received the opening kickoff and needed just 3 plays to score. Spencer Schumacher opened the drive by connecting with Hunter Chaffee on a deep pass down the left side for 39 yards. After a running play was stopped for a loss Luke Wemhoff took an option pitch from Schumacher around the right side for 19 yards and the touchdown. Wemhoff added the 2-pointer to make it 8-0 just 45 seconds into the game.
Kamiah looked to answer back as they got a huge gain on a pass that was tipped by a Prairie defender but then caught by Kamiah’s Tyrel Henry who gained 65 yards. Wemhoff made a touchdown saving tackle at the 5 yard line. Wemhoff’s tackle turned out to be a huge play as Kamiah was unable to score despite a first and goal at the 5.
Jayce Huling tackled Liam Carson for a 6 yard loss with a holding penalty added on top of that. 2 plays later Wemhoff sacked quarterback Kaleb Oatman for a 6 yard loss leaving Kamiah facing a fourth and goal from the 27. Jake Stubbers deflected the fourth down pass attempt and Prairie took over at the 27.
Prairie needed just 5 plays to go 73 yards. Schumacher hit Stubbers over the middle for 31 and 2 plays later connected with Brandon Anderson for 17 on a swing pass out of the backfield. The latter play set Prairie up with a first and goal at the 8. Schumacher ran a keeper around right end for the touchdown on the next play. Wemhoff again ran in the 2-pointer to make it 16-0.
Prairie got the ball right back as the Kamiah return man fumbled the kickoff with Caleb McWilliams recovering the ball at the Kamiah 37.
Prairie lost 5 yards on the first play from scrimmage but Schumacher found Chaffee deep over the middle for 42 yards on the next play for the touchdown. Prairie then lined up to kick the extra point with Chaffee putting it through the uprights to make it 23-0.
For the second time in 3 kickoffs, Chaffee kicked toward the corner pylon of the end zone and had the ball check up and stay inbounds. The first time Kamiah wound up starting at their own 5. This time the return man had to pick up the ball at the 1 and got back to the 3.
Kamiah gained just 7 yards in 3 plays and had to punt. The punt traveled just 25 yards to the 35 where Anderson caught the ball and returned it 10 yards to the 25.
Two 7 yard runs by Wemhoff put the ball at the 11. Prairie wound up facing a fourth and 6 from the 7. Schumacher connected with Anderson, who came out of the backfield, for the touchdown. Prairie again went for the 1 point try and Anderson made a great play to grab the snap and get the ball down for Chaffee’s kick which went through to make it 30-0 with 43 seconds still left in the first quarter.
Kamiah had a could of big running plays to get the ball down to the Prairie 14 before their drive stall and they had to turn the ball over on downs at the 20.
Prairie moved the ball out to the 43 where Anderson took the ball out to the left side, broke a tackle at the Kamiah 45 and picked up a great downfield block by McWilliams that sprung him loose for a 57 yard touchdown run. This time the try for point failed as Prairie now led 36-0.
Hunter Chaffee kicked a pair of extra points in the Kamiah game. Holding is Brandon Anderson.Kamiah finally got on the board on their next possession. Facing third and 5 from their own 36, Kamiah ran a fake to the right and quarterback Oatman kept the ball and went left and broke free for a 64 yard scoring play. The conversion pass failed as it was now 36-6.
Prairie got flagged for a personal foul penalty behind the play so Kamiah got to kick off from the Prairie 45. Surprisingly they kicked it deep, going for the touchback.
Prairie took over on their own 20 and needed just 3 plays to go the distance. Schumacher went back to pass on first down, found no one open and wound up gaining 27 yards running the ball. Wemhoff picked up 11 on the next play. On the third play of the drive Schumacher took the ball around left end on the option, kept it and went 42 yards for the touchdown. He then passed to McWilliams for the 2-pointer to make it 44-6.
Kamiah answered back, starting at their own 8 after a penalty on the kickoff return. They went 92 yards in 10 plays with most of the yardage coming on 3 pass plays.
The touchdown came on a trick play as Oatman pitched to Carson and then took off around left end. Carson went right, stopped and threw the ball back to Oatman down the left sideline for the 36 yard scoring play. Oatman then passed to Carson for the 2-pointer to make it 44-14 with 44 seconds left in the half.
Kamiah then tried an onside kick with Jace Perrin covering the ball at the Prairie 47.
Prairie tried a pass on first down that went incomplete but a pass interference penalty gave prairie a first down at the Kamiah 38.
Wemhoff took the ball around right end on the next play for 38 yards and another Prairie touchdown. Schumacher passed to Chaffee for the 2-pointer to make it 52-14. That’s how the score stood at the half.
Kamiah received the second half kickoff and turned the ball over on downs at their own 35 after a 6 yard loss on fourth down.
Prairie had to overcome a holding penalty on their ensuing drive but Schumacher connected with Anderson for 26 yards on third and 11 for the touchdown. Carson Schmidt made a big block to spring Anderson for the score. Schumacher ran in the 2-pointer to make it 60-14 and invoke the mercy rule of a running clock the rest of the way.
Kamiah answered back with their third touchdown of the game, a 37 yard scoring pass from Oatman to Carson. The 2-point try failed making it 60-20.
Prairie’s next possession was the first time in the game that they didn’t score when they had the ball. It was their ninth possession.
Prairie went for it on fourth and 3 from their own 38 and the pass went incomplete. Kamiah couldn’t move the ball either and Prairie got the ball back on their own 39 as the third quarter ended.
A 16 yard run by Wemhoff and a 38 yard pass from Schumacher to Chaffee set Prairie up with first and goal at the 3. Anderson scored on the next play to make it 66-20 as the 2-point try was stopped short.
That was the last score of the game with 9:21 left to play.
Both sides JV squads got the rest of the playing time, which helped make up for the fact that both the JV game against Kamiah and the proposed fifth quarter prior to Friday’s game got cancelled due to lack of players by Kamiah.
For the game Wemhoff had 107 yards on 11 carries with Anderson adding 99 on 7 carries and Schumacher 84 on 5 carries and. Prairie had 293 yards rushing on 29 attempts.
Schumacher completed 11 of 14 pass attempts for 206 yards while Devin Ross was 0 for 1.
Chaffee caught 3 passes for 119 yards. Anderson caught 5 for 45, Stubbers 2 for 41 and McWilliams 1 for 1 yard.
For Kamiah Oatman gained 70 yards on 15 carries as Kamiah had 135 yards on 36 rushing attempts.
Oatman completed 13 of 18 passes for 172 yards while Carson was 1 for 1 for 36 and JV quarterback Bret Raymond was 0 for 2.
Henry caught 6 passes for 88 yards, Carson 6 for 65, Oatman 1 for 36 and Cristian Lopez 1 for 29.
Anderson led the defense with 8 tackles with Huling adding 6½. Wemhoff had 5 tackles, Chaffee and Stubbers 4 each, Perrin and Owen Anderson 3 each, Derik Shears 2½, Schumacher and Michael Schwartz 2 each, Tucker Hibbard and Schmidt 1½ each and Hayden Uhlenkott 1.
Prairie is now 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in league play. Their next game will be Homecoming this Friday, October 7 against Troy. The two teams are the only two unbeatens left in league play after Wallace lost to Genesee last Friday.

Spencer Schumacher stiffarms a Kamiah defender to the ground as he gains yardage on a running play.

Hunter Chaffee seems surprised to make this catch, which went for a touchdown.

Brandon Anderson tries to ward off a Kamiah defender who eventually made the tackle.

Luke Wemhoff carries the ball after having just received a pitch from Spencer Schumacher, 12, on an option run to the right.
