Pirates win twice
The Prairie Lady Pirates opened their season with a pair of easy wins. On Tuesday, Nov. 15 they traveled to Lewiston and beat the Lewiston JV 66-38. On Friday, Nov. 18 they opened their league schedule with an 85-30 win at Potlatch. Prairie forced 16 turnovers in the opening quarter as they held Lewiston to just 6 shot attempts. Lewiston had the early lead at 4-6 but a 9-0 run fueled by the defense gave Prairie the lead for good. Chaye Uptmor went 5 for 6 at the line in that 9-0 run and added a basket after a steal with Kylie Tidwell adding the other two points after a steal by Jordyn Higgins. Prairie led 15-8 at the end of the first quarter. Prairie built their lead to 24-13 in the second quarter then Lewiston started to find their shooting stroke. Lewiston connected on three 3-pointers to cut the lead down to 5 and then added 2 free throws on a foul at the halftime buzzer to pull within 29-26 at the break. In the second half Angela Wemhoff, who had been shut out in the first half, took over the game. She started driving to the basket every chance she got and wound up hitting 7 of 8 shots in the third quarter while also going 3 for 3 at the line to help Prairie turn a close game at the half into a 51-34 runaway by the end of the third quarter. She kept it up in the fourth hitting another 4 of 6 shots to wind up with 25 points, all in the second half. Uptmor wound up scoring 9 with Tidwell adding 8, Josie and India Peery each adding 7, Jordyn Higgins 6, Sydney Bruner 3 and Theresa Wemhoff 1. Lewiston held the rebounding edge at 32-35 with Wemhoff grabbing 8 to lead Prairie. Prairie actually outrebounded the taller Bengals in the second half by a 20-15 count. Wemhoff had 6 steals and Uptmor added 4. Jordyn Higgins and Leah Higgins each had 3 assists to lead the team. Prairie was 25 for 58 from the field, 43%, and 16 of 34 from the line, 47%. Lewiston was 11 for 31 from the field, 35%, and 11 for 22 at the line, 50%. The JV team had an even easier time of it against the Lewiston C team as they rolled to a 52-17 win. Prairie led 18-0 at the end of the first quarter and Lewiston attempted just 3 shots, none until late in the quarter. Kristyna Krogh was Prairie’s big gun on offense in the opening quarter with 11 points as she was 4 for 4 from the field and 3 for 4 at the line. Alexis Hiler, Kodie Tidwell and Hope McIntire each added 2 and Theresa Wemhoff 1. Prairie upped their lead to 20-0 in the second quarter with Lewiston finally denting the scoreboard at the 4:40 mark. Prairie then went on a 10-0 run to up their lead to 30-2. Prairie’s 14 second quarter points were well spread out as only Brooklyn Riener scored more than 1 basket with 4 points while Hiler, Tidwell, Sarah Ross, SierahPoxleitner and Alexis Shears each added 2 points. Prairie led 32-5 at the half. Tidwell scored 8 of Prairie’s 12 third quarter points as they took a 44-9 lead into the fourth quarter. The final quarter was played with a running clock. Tidwell wound up the leading scorer with 14 points with Krogh scoring 13. Hiler and Ross scored 6 each with Riener and Poxleitner scoring 4 each. McIntire, Ciara Chaffee and Shears scored 2 each while Wemhoff scored 1. Prairie held a commanding 43-21 edge on the boards with Tidwell collecting 6 rebounds while Hiler, Wemhoff, Krogh, Chaffee and Shears had 5 each. Krogh had 7 steals and Hiler had 4 assists. Potlatch scored first in the game, draining a 3-ponter a minute in. Prairie then got rolling though and put together a 15-0 run. Tidwell and Angela Wemhoff did most of the scoring in that run with 7 and 6 points respectively. Tidwell capped off the run with Prairie’s first made 3-pointer of the season. Each team added a pair of free throws, a preview of the second quarter, to make it 17-5 at the quarter break. Potlatch managed to cut the lead to 9 at 19-10 but Prairie then went on a 13-3 run to push the lead to 32-13. Although Prairie outscored the Loggers 18-11 in the quarter, the way the points were scored made it anything but a smooth game to watch as it seemed the referees were handling the ball more than either team. There were 28 fouls called in the first half with both teams in the double bonus early in the second quarter. Prairie wound up attempting 11 free throws in the quarter, making 6, while Potlatch attempted 10, making 7. Prairie led 35-16 at the half. Jordyn Higgins set the tone for the second half when she opened the third quarter scoring with a 3-pointer. Prairie wound up hitting 7 long-range bombs in the second half with freshman India Peery connecting on 4 of them. Tidwell and Uptmor each added 1. Prairie connected on 11 of 22 shots in the third quarter and 10 of 16 in the fourth as Potlatch backed off on the fouling. Prairie had just 2 free throw attempts in the second half while Potlatch had just 4. Prairie racked up 27 points in the third quarter and 23 more in the fourth. India Peery wound up with 16 points to lead the scoring with all her points coming in the second half. Tidwell and Angela Wemhoff added 14 each with Uptmor scoring 13 and Leah Higgins 12 as Prairie had 5 players score in double figures. Everyone on the roster wound up scoring at least 1 basket as Jordyn Higgins scored 5 with Josie Peery, Bruner and Krogh scoring 3 each and Theresa Wemhoff 2. Prairie dominated on the boards 50-30 with Leah Higgins pulling down 11 to lead the team. Bruner and Uptmor added 7 each. Bruner had 5 steals while Angela Wemhoff and Uptmor had 4 each. Jordyn Higgins had 4 assists and Angela Wemhoff had 3. Prairie was 33 for 78 from the field, 42%, and 11 for 20 at the line, 55%. Potlatch was 7 for 34 from the field, 21%, and 13 for 20 at the line, 65%. Prairie is now 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play. The JV team had another easy game as they rolled to a 58-12 win. They still haven’t allowed a first quarter point as they outscored Potlatch 17-0 in the first quarter. Krogh again led the first quarter scoring with 6 points on 3 for 3 shooting. Hope McIntire scored to open the second quarter, making it 19-0 before Potlatch finally scored at the 6:10 mark. Kodie Tidwell took over the scoring load in the second quarter with 9 of the team’s 15 points as Prairie took a 32-4 halftime lead. Tidwell hit 3 of 4 in the third quarter and Kendra Duclos added 5 points as Prairie made it 50-8 by the end of the third quarter. Chaffee scored 6 of Prairie’s 8 in the running clock fourth quarter. Tidwell wound up with 17 points to lead the scoring with Krogh, Duclos and Chaffee each scoring 8. Hiler scored 5 with Theresa Wemhoff and McIntire adding 4 each while Ross and Poxleitner added 2 each. Prairie had a 35-26 edge on the boards with Hiler and Duclos each pulling down 6 to lead the team. Tidwell and Wemhoff had 5 steals each and McIntire had 3 assists.
