players named to all-league team
Lucas Wemhoff at both running back and defensive back, Brandon Anderson at linebacker and Spencer Schumacher on the defensive line were named to the first team All-White Pine League team. Schumacher was named to the second team as a quarterback. Also named to the second team were Hunter Chaffee at wide receiver and Caleb McWilliams at linebacker. Receiving honorable mention was Jace Perrin on the offensive line. 24 out for boys basketball The Prairie boys basketball team has a new coach for the first time in 10 years and 24 players turned out. Kevin Chaffee, who started as a JV coach under Jerry Uhling, served in that same capacity for the past 9 seasons under Teel Bruner before moving up to the head coaching spot this season. He is one of 5 new head coaches out of 7 schools in the White Pine League Division 1. Genesee, Lapwai, Potlatch and Kamiah also have new head coaches. Only Troy and C.V. return the same head coaches. As JV coach Chaffee had most of his varsity players last season as Tyson Schlader, a senior, is the only returning starter. Hunter Chaffee, a junior, saw a lot of time on the floor last season for the varsity with seniors Brandon Anderson and Lucas Wemhoff and sophomore Spencer Schumacher the only others to see any varsity action last season. Prairie picked up some help though with Summit not having a boys team as Patrick Chmelik, a senior and a 3-year starter for the Patriots, will be with the Pirates this season. Others on the team are seniors Gavin Branson, Todd Ott and Grant Gehring. Branson played with Nezperce a couple years ago but was playing in Oklahoma last season. Anthony Karel and Nick Mager are juniors on the varsity and Dylan Schumacher and Devin Ross are sophomores who will also spend time with the JV team. Chaffee said he feels Prairie will be finding out what they can do early on with the hope of peaking at District time where they could compete for a state berth. He figures Lapwai will be the team to beat with Genesee, Troy and an improved Potlatch team also in the mix but you can’t count out C.V. and Kamiah. Playing for the JV and new coach Seth Guyer are junior exchange student Luis Samper-Flores, sophomores Ross, Dylan Schumacher, Michael Schwartz, Tanner Hibbard and Carson Schmidt and freshmen Damian Forsmann, Derik Shears, Reid Uptmor, Tajh Branson, Owen Anderson, Hayden Uhlenkott and Sam Mager. Prairie also has several C games scheduled to give more playing time to the younger players. Scot Schlader and Pat Holthaus both return as assistant coaches. At one point Schlader was going to be the JV coach but had to give it up due to a change in his regular job with the Postal Service. That led to Chaffee talking with Guyer about the position and the chance to bring a younger coach into the program. Guyer is a 2011 graduate of Prairie. Prairie gets their season started with a non-league game against Division 2 favorite Kendrick on Thursday, Dec. 1 then plays at Grangeville in the Idaho County Shootout on Saturday. Their league opener will be at Troy Thursday, Dec. 8.
