win first 2 games
The Prairie Pirates got off to a good start as they opened the season with a pair of non-league road wins giving new head coach Kevin Chaffee a good start to his career. On Thursday, Dec. 1 they traveled to Kendrick and won 47-32. Then on Saturday, Dec. 3 they knocked off Grangeville 53-39 in the 8th annual Idaho County Shootout. At Kendrick In the opener at Kendrick new additions Gavin Branson and Patrick Chmelik led the way to the win for the Pirates. Branson scored 13 points to lead the scoring and Chmelik pulled down 18 rebounds to lead Prairie to a 33-22 advantage on the boards. Prairie started well as they took a 15-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. Kendrick outscored Prairie in the second but the Pirates still led 24-20 at the half. Prairie came out strong in the third and outscored the Tigers 13-5 to take a 37-25 lead into the final period. Brandon Anderson was also in double figures in scoring with 11 points with Chmelik scoring 8, Hunter Chaffee and Lucas Wemhoff 5 each, Tyson Schlader 4 and Nick Mager 1. Schlader added 8 rebounds. Defensively Chmelik helped limit Kendrick’s 6’7” post Wyatt Hardin to 12 points. Chmelik and Hardin know each other well from Chmelik’s time at Summit. The two played each other 4 times last season, twice during the season and once each at District and State. The JV team won big in Seth Guyer’s coaching debut 53-16. Prairie took their first lead before the game even started as one of their players was left out of the scorebook leading to a technical foul. Chaffee sank both free throws for a 2-0 Prairie lead. Chaffee then got fouled after the ensuing inbounds pass and added another free throw. Anderson scored on an inbounds pass from Branson and Chmelik added a tip-in for a 7-0 Prairie lead. Grangeville came back to trim the lead to 1 At 7-6 and again at 9-8 but Prairie then finished the quarter with a 7-0 run with Branson scoring 5 of those points and assisting on the other, an inbounds feed to Chmelik as Prairie took a 16-8 lead. A putback by Wemhoff opened the second quarter scoring and put Prairie up 18-8. Grangeville got back within 5 at 18-13 but Chmelik then scored 6 of the next 8 points on a jump hook and a pair of tip-ins as Prairie pushed the lead to 11 at 26-15. Prairie led 30-22 at the half. Chmelik scored the first 3 points of the second half on a lay-up and a free throw but then Grangeville got a run together. The Bulldogs outscored Prairie 2-11 to cut the lead to just 2 points after a 3-pointer by Trey Dreadfulwater with 2:18 left in the third. Prairie’s defense came back to life and they shut out Grangeville the final 2 minutes of the quarter. Meanwhile Anderson sank a 3-pointer to make it 38-33 after 3 quarters. It was still a 5 point game at 40-35 with 7:15 left. Prairie then took over the game as they held Grangeville scoreless for over 5 minutes and allowed just 4 points in the final 7 minutes of the game. During Grangeville’s scoreless streak Branson scored a basket, Chmelik hit 2 free throws and Anderson scored inside to make it 46-35. After Grangeville broke their drought, Anderson scored on a putback and then added a 3-point play when he broke free for a long pass from Schlader for a lay-up and got fouled. That made it 51-37 with 1:20 to play. Grangeville scored their final basket with 1:06 left and Anderson and Wemhoff each added a free throw for the final margin. Anderson also wound up in double figures with 13 points while Branson scored 9, Chaffee 6 and Schlader, Wemhoff and Mager scored 2 each. Prairie dominated the boards 48-27 thanks to Chmelik and Schlader who had 11 rebounds. Anderson had 4 steals and Schlader 3 while Branson had 3 assists. Prairie was 21 for 44 from the field, 48%, and 10 for 24 at the line, 42%. Grangeville was 15 for 44 from the field, 34%, and 7 for 15 at the line, 47%. Prairie is now 2-0 on the season.
