Pirates are now 6-0
The Prairie Lady Pirates added 3 more wins this past week to improve to 6-0 on the season. On Tuesday, Nov. 29 they doubled up the Lewiston JV 61-30. On Friday, Dec. 2 they beat Genesee by the same score, 61-30. Finally on Saturday, Dec. 3 they completed a season sweep of Grangeville with a 54-41 win at the Idaho County Shootout. Lewiston came back to cut the lead to 2 at 11-9 but a basket by Leah Higgins, a 3 by Tidwell and a basket by Angela Wemhoff pushed the lead to 9 at 18-9. Prairie led 20-11 at the end of the first quarter thanks to an inbounds play from Wemhoff to Sydney Bruner just before the buzzer. Wemhoff scored 8 points in the second quarter and India Peery added 5 as Prairie took a 36-17 lead into the break. Prairie outscored Lewiston 20-10 in the third quarter as Bruner scored 6 points and Wemhoff, Josie Peery and India Peery added 4 each. Prairie took a 56-27 lead into the fourth quarter. When Bruner scored to open the fourth quarter that invoked the running clock mercy rule with 7:05 to play. Wemhoff wound up with 16 points to lead the scoring. Tidwell scored 13 and Bruner had a monster game with 11 points and 10 rebounds along with 4 steals. India Peery scored 9 while Leah Higgins scored 5, Josie Peery 4 and Chaye Uptmor 3. Despite a height disadvantage, Prairie dominated the boards 40-23. Bruner’s 10 was the team-high with Wemhoff adding 8. India Peery tied Bruner for the steal lead with 4. Wemhoff had 6 assists. Lewiston cut down on the turnovers from the previous game but still had 22 compared to 11 for Prairie. Prairie was 24 for 50 from the field, 48%, and 12 for 23 at the line, 52%. Lewiston was 11 for 38 from the field, 29%, and 7 for 11 at the line, 64%. The JV game was totally non-competitive as Lewiston didn’t score until near the end of the third quarter as Prairie won 49-3. Prairie led 10-0 after the first quarter with Kendra Duclos scoring 10 and Alexis Hiler 3. They upped it to 30-0 by halftime. Ciara Chaffee scored 7 in the second quarter while Theresa Wemhoff scored 5 and Hope McIntire 4. Prairie was up 39-0 in the third when Lewiston finally scored at the 1:33 mark. Prairie led 41-2 after 3 quarters. For the game Hiler and Chaffee shared scoring honors with 9 points each. SyndeeBruegeman scored 6. Kodie Tidwell, Wemhoff and Kristyna Krogh scored 5 each. Duclos and McIntire added 4 each and Brooklyn Riener scored 2. Prairie dominated the boards 46-25. Duclos and McIntire had 6 each to lead the team. Sarah Ross, Krogh and Wemhoff had 4 steals each and Wemhoff and McIntire had 3 assists each while Sierah Poxleitner and Alexis Shears had 2 each. The opening quarter was close as Genesee’s Courtney Burt sank 3 of 4 three-point tries to offset the 8 points scored by Wemhoff. After Burt’s third 3-pointer Prairie trailed 8-11 but a basket each by Uptmor and Wemhoff gave Prairie a 12-11 lead at the end of the quarter. Genesee’s Anna Druffel hit a 3 in the second quarter to tie the game at 14 but Prairie answered with an 8-1 run. Uptmor scored on an inbounds feed from Jordyn Higgins then Wemhoff stole the ball and scored a lay-up. A steal by Jordyn Higgins led to her feeding Uptmor for a lay-up to make it 20-14. After a Genesee free throw Josie Peery scored inside to make it 22-15. Burt answered with a 3-pointer and a steal and drive for a lay-up to cut the lead to 22-20 but Burt never scored again in the game as Tidwell put the clamps on her defensively. Prairie closed out the half with a 6-0 run on a jumper by Uptmor, a lay-up by Josie Peery on an inbounds feed from Wemhoff and 2 free throws by Wemhoff. Druffel hit a 3 to open the second half scoring but Prairie dominated from then on. A 3-point play by Wemhoff and a basket by Tidwell made it 33-23. Genesee then scored a basket but Prairie then went on a 15-0 run kicked off by another 3-point play by Wemhoff. Jordyn Higgins and Leah Higgins each scored 4 and Uptmor and Tidwell added 2 each as Prairie took a 48-25 lead. Prairie led 50-28 at the end of the quarter. Genesee scored only 2 points in the fourth quarter while Prairie scored 11. The game went to running clock mode when Uptmor scored inside with 1:00 left. Wemhoff scored 18 points to lead Prairie in scoring. Uptmor added 10, Tidwell and Josie Peery 8 each, Leah Higgins 7 and Jordyn Higgins and India Peery 4 each. Prairie had a 39-31 edge on the boards with Uptmor pulling down 7 to lead the team. Josie Peery and Leah Higgins each added 6. Wemhoff had 6 steals and Leah Higgins 4 as Prairie forced Genesee into 34 turnovers while committing just 11. Jordyn Higgins had 4 assists and Leah Higgins had 3. Prairie was 26 for 67 from the field, 43%, and 7 for 12 at the line, 58%. Genesee was 11 for 35 from the field, 31%, and 2 for 5 at the line, 40%. Genesee was just 4 for 16 from the field in the second half. In the JV game Prairie raced to a 26-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and went on to win 52-19 in a turnover fest. Prairie committed just 4 turnovers to 14 for Genesee in the opening quarter as the Pirates put up 24 shots compared to just 4 for the Bulldogs. Krogh scored 8 points in the quarter while Kodie Tidwell scored 6. Genesee led early on at 2-4 but a 24-2 run put Prairie in control. Prairie’s scoring pace slowed considerably in the second quarter as each team scored 4 points on 2 for 9 shooting. Both were also 0 for 3 at the line as Prairie led 30-10 at the half. Prairie had a 10-2 start to the third quarter as they took a 40-12 lead and led 40-16 after 3 quarters. Hiler scored 6 of Prairie’s 10 third quarter points. She added 3 more in the fourth and Tidwell scored 4 as Prairie eventually pushed their lead past 30 points to invoke the running clock rule for the final 2:54. Hiler wound up with 13 points to lead the scoring with Tidwell adding 10. Krogh scored 8. Theresa Wemhoff scored 6. Duclos and Bruegeman added 4 each while Ross scored 3 and Chaffee and Shears 2 each. Duclos had 15 rebounds and Chaffee 8 to lead Prairie to a 54-18 domination on the boards. Grangeville took the early lead in the game at 2-5 but Prairie answered back. The Pirates were behind 8-10 with 3:19 left when they threw their halfcourt trap at the Bulldogs and forced turnovers on 4 straight possessions that led to Prairie points. A steal by Uptmor led to a basket by Bruner that tied it at 10. Bruner then stole the ball and took it herself to the basket. Another steal by Uptmor led to a basket by India Peery and then Peery stole the ball and wound up scoring to make it 16-10 at the end of the quarter. Prairie then went ice-cold in the second quarter as they were 0 for 8 from the field and scored just 4 points, all at the line. Grangeville was able to take the lead by only by 2 points at the half, 20-22. A putback by Wemhoff tied it early in the third quarter but Grangeville’s Paige Lindsley put the Bulldogs back on top with a 3-pointer. Tidwell answered with a basket, her first of the game, but Grangeville’s Sophia Bush answered with 5 straight points that gave Grangeville their biggest lead of the game at 24-30. Prairie came back with 9 straight points to take the lead back, using their trap to force more turnovers. Leah Higgins hit a pair of free throws and Uptmor added another to cut the lead in half. Tidwell drove inside for a lay-up to get within 1. India Peery sank a pair of free throws to give Prairie the lead and Tidwell stole the ball and scored to make it 33-30. Grangeville broke the run with a basket by Rachel Kelley but Prairie then started a 12-0 run as Uptmor scored inside and Jordyn Higgins sank a 3-pointer after a steal by Tidwell that made it 38-32 after 3 quarters. A putback and a lay-up by Uptmor and a 3-pointer by Tidwell made it 45-32 at the 6:40 mark of the fourth. Grangeville broke that run with a free throw then Wemhoff missed the first and sank the second free throw 3 consecutive trips to the line to make it 48-33 and complete the 26-3 run mentioned in the opening paragraph. Each team scored 8 points over the final 4:02 of play. Uptmor scored 11 to lead Prairie in scoring with Tidwell adding 10, all in the second half. Wemhoff and Jordyn Higgins each scored 8 while Leah Higgins and India Peery scored 6 each. Bruner scored 4 and Josie Peery scored 3. Lindsley led Grangeville with 16 with half of those coming after Prairie had taken their 48-33 lead. Grangeville had 3 of their 5 starters foul out of the game as they were whistled for 29 fouls compared to 18 for Prairie. Grangeville had the rebounding edge 29-42. Wemhoff led Prairie with 9 rebounds. Jordyn Higgins had 5 steals while Tidwell and Wemhoff had 4 each and Bruner and Uptmor had 3 each. Wemhoff had 5 assists. Prairie was 17 for 42 from the field, 40%, and 26 for 47 at the line, 55%. Grangeville was 15 for 44 from the field, 34%, and 10 for 21 at the line, 48%.
