Two
named to all-state football team
Lucas Wemhoff and Brandon Anderson have been named to the Idaho Statesman’s 1-A All-State football team which includes players from both Division 1 and Division 2. Wemhoff was named as a first team defensive back and to the second team as a running back. Anderson was named to the second team at linebacker. Pirates are 1-1 on the week The Prairie boys team suffered their first loss of the season, 40-59, at defending league champion Lapwai Saturday, Dec. 17, but bounced back with a 74-29 win over Clearwater Valley Monday, Dec. 19 at Cottonwood. Hunter Chaffee finally broke through for Prairie with 2:27 left in the opening quarter as he scored after making an offensive rebound. Meanwhile Lapwai was getting higher percentage shots for the most part and putting them in. Lapwai kept it up in the second quarter building a 6-28 lead before Prairie finally got a couple of perimeter shots to fall. Gavin Branson sank a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left and Chaffee sank a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer that made the halftime score 12-28. Prairie had better luck on offense in the second half but couldn’t gain any ground as the closest they could get was 14 points after a 3-pointer by Branson late in the third quarter that made it 26-40 and again at 28-42 after a hook shot by Patrick Chmelik early in the fourth quarter. Chaffee, Branson and Tyson Schlader each scored 8 points to lead the Pirates. Chmelik and Spencer Schumacher, in his first action of the season, scored 4 each. Brandon Anderson scored 3, Luke Wemhoff 2 and Todd Ott 1. Prairie had a slim edge on the boards of 33-32. Chmelik had 11 to lead the Pirates with Schlader adding 8 rebounds. Schlader, Wemhoff and Chaffee each had 3 steals while Wemhoff had 5 assists. Shooting percentage was a big advantage for Lapwai as Prairie was 14 for 52, 27%, and 6 for 10 at the line, 60%, while Lapwai was 24 for 45 from the field, 53%, and 5 for 8 at the line, 63%. Prairie had better success in the JV game as they won 51-34. Prairie broke a 6-6 tie in the first quarter by scoring the next 15 straight points. They led 16-6 at the end of the quarter and made it 21-6 early in the second. Anthony Karel scored 9 of Prairie’s 16 first quarter points with Derik Shears adding 4 and Dylan Schumacher 3. Lapwai got back within 10 in the second quarter but Prairie ended the half with a 4-0 run, all on free throws, for a 26-12 lead at the break. After sitting out the second quarter, Karel and Shears were back on the floor in the third quarter and helped Prairie outscore the Wildcats 19-4 in the quarter. Karel added another 8 points for a team high 17 while Shears was 3 for 3 from the field for 6 points. Prairie led 45-16 after 3 quarters. The fourth quarter saw Prairie working the clock more than trying to score as they scored all 6 of their points from the line. Prairie led 49-22 with 3:02 left then saw Lapwai outscored them 2-12 the rest of the way. In addition to Karel with 17 points Schumacher had 11, Shears 10, Devin ross 7, Hayden Uhlenkott 3, Reid Uptmor 2 and Carson Schmidt 1. Prairie’s JVs had a 34-31 rebounding edge led by Schumacher with 8 with Karel and Shears adding 7 each. Ross, Tanner Hibbard and Uhlenkott had 3 steals each while Schumacher had 7 assists. Prairie was 16 for 42 from the field, 38%, and 17 for 28 at the line, 61%. Lapwai was 13 for 39 from the field, 33%, and 6 for 16 at the line, 38%. Prairie scored the first 4 points of the game and never trailed. Chmelik opened the scoring on a feed from Branson then Anderson scored on a feed from Schlader. C.V. was still close at 9-4 when Wemhoff scored to kickoff a 6-0 run that ended the first quarter. Chaffee added 2 free throws then Schumacher scored on a hook from the left baseline. C.V. scored the first 5 points of the second quarter but Prairie then went on a 13-1 run that put the Pirates in control. Chmelik had 2 baskets and 2 free throws in the run while Anderson had a pair of baskets and Schlader a basket and a free throw. That put Prairie up 28-10. Prairie went on to take a 35-14 lead at the half as Schlader added 2 more baskets and Ott closed out the scoring with a free throw. Chmelik opened the second half with a blocked shot that he wound up grabbing and taking down the floor for a layup and free throw to make it 38-14. C.V. answered with a pair of free throws but Prairie then put the foot on the gas and outscored the Rams 17-2 to push the lead to 55-18. Prairie took a 61-22 lead into the final quarter, invoking a running clock. The Pirates kept pulling away as they outscored the Rams 13-7 in the final frame. Chmelik wound up with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds and also had 3 blocked shots. Schlader also scored 17 points and had 7 steals and 6 assists. Anderson was also in double figures with 12 points while Chaffee scored 9, Ott 5, Spencer Schumacher and Wemhoff 4 each, Grant Gehring and Dylan Schumacher 2 each and Branson and Anthony Karel 1 each. Prairie dominated the boards 48-22 with Spencer Schumacher edging out Chmelik for team-high honors with 12. Branson had 11 assists and Wemhoff had 4 steals. Prairie was 30 for 53 from the field, 57%, and 10 for 24 at the line, 42%. C.V. was 7 for 38 from the field, 18%, and 13 for 25 at the line, 52%. Prairie is now 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in league play. Prairie also rolled to an easy win in the JV game, 57-27. It was 27-0 at the end of the first quarter as Karel scored 9 and Dylan Schumacher and Ross 8 each for the Pirates in the quarter. Shears added the other 2 points. C.V. outscored Prairie 9-10 in the second quarter but still trailed 36-10 at the half. Schumacher scored 5 and Hayden Uhlenkott 4 in the second quarter. It was 14-6 in the third quarter as Shears scored 6 while Karel added 4 and Ross 3. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock. Schumacher and Karel wound up the leading scorers with 13 points each while Ross added 11. Shears scored 8, Uhlenkott 7, Schmidt and Damian Forsmann 2 each and Sam Mager 1.
