beat Genesee
The Prairie Pirates had just one game this past week as they knocked off Genesee 53-35 in a home league game Friday, Jan. 13. Prairie jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the game as Tyson Schlader made a basket and a free throw and Patrick Chmelik added a putback. Genesee answered back though with a 2-8 run the rest of the quarter to take a 7-8 lead. They led by as many as 3 twice in the second quarter, at 8-11 and again at 10-13. Hunter Chaffee sank a 3-pointer with 4:04 left in the half to tie the game at 13-13 and that sparked a 10-0 run to end the half. Schlader scored off of a steal. Gavin Branson converted a 3-point play on a driving layup and Spencer Schumacher added a pair of free throws for a 20-13 halftime lead. Branson made it a 10-point lead with a 3-pointer to open the second half scoring but Genesee was able to cut the lead back to 6 at 23-17. A pair of 3-pointers by the Bulldogs later in the quarter got them within 4 at 29-25. Chaffee answered with a 3 on a feed from Branson and after a Genesee basket, Schumacher scored inside to make it 34-27 after 3 quarters. A basket by Schlader was answered by Genesee early in the fourth then Prairie went on a 9-0 run that put them firmly in control. Schumacher and Chmelik each scored inside. Schlader connected on a 3 and Chmelik scored on a putback to make it 45-29. Genesee broke the run with a 3-point play but Prairie then went on an 8-0 run to put the game away. Chaffee opened it with his third 3-pointer of the game. Luke Wemhoff and Todd Ott added baskets and Devin Ross capped the Prairie scoring with a free throw. Genesee finished off the scoring with a meaningless 3-pointer with 5 seconds left. Schlader had a double-double to lead the Pirates with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Chmelik nearly had a double-double as well with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Chaffee added 9 points with Schumacher scoring 7, Branson 6, Wemhoff and Ott 2 each and Ross 1. Prairie had a 41-29 rebounding edge. Schlader added 2 steals and Branson had 4 assists while Chaffee had 3. Prairie was 21 for 50 from the field, 42%, and 6 for 13 at the line, 46%. Genesee was 13 for 45 from the field, 29%, and 5 for 12 at the line, 42%. Prairie improves to 8-2 on the season and 4-1 in league play. They have a much busier week coming up with the makeup game at Asotin on Jan. 18, a league game at Kamiah the 19th and a home league game against Troy on the 21st. The JV game was tight in the first half but Prairie pulled away in the second for a 40-25 win. Genesee jumped out to a 3-10 lead with a Devin Ross 3 being Prairie’s only points. Prairie closed the quarter with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 9-10. Hayden Uhlenkott, Tanner Hibbard and Damian Forsmann each scored a basket in that run. Derik Shears scored a pair of baskets to open the second quarter and gave Prairie their first lead. Uhlenkott added 2 more baskets as Prairie took a 17-14 halftime lead. Genesee tied it with a 3-pointer to open the third quarter but Prairie answered with an 11-0 run. Ross started it with a steal and ensuing lay-up. Shears scored on an inbounds play and then added another basket. Forsmann scored and Ross finished off the run with a 3-pointer. Ross added another 3-pointer as Prairie took a 31-21 lead into the fourth quarter. Prairie had their 10-point lead despite going 0-8 at the free throw line to that point. They got a lot more opportunities for free throws in the fourth quarter but made just 3 of 13. On the plus side they held Genesee to just 4 points in the fourth quarter as they outscored them 9-4 to post a 15-point win. Ross had three 3-pointers and 12 points to lead the JV’s in scoring. Shears added 10 points while Uhlenkott scored 6. Hibbard and Forsmann had 4 each while Owen Anderson scored 3 and Carson Schmidt had 1. Shears had 9 rebounds to lead the team although Genesee had a 22-27 rebounding edge. Ross had 5 steals and 3 assists while Hibbard also had 5 steals. Prairie was 17 for 34 from the field, 50%, and just 3 for 22 at the line, 14%. Genesee was 10 for 29 from the field, 34%, and 3 for 9 at the line, 33%.
