In the third quarter Chmelik was 4 for 4 from the field and the rest of the team was 3 for 5 including Chaffee’s 6th 3-pointer as the Prairieled by as many as 24 points at 57-33. They still led 61-39 heading into the fourth quarter. In the meantime, Genesee had put junior guard Coy Stout on Chaffee to keep him from getting any more good looks on 3-point attempts. In the fourth quarter Prairie pushed their lead to 26 at 65-39 after a pair of baskets by Schlader. Genesee then started their rally. Prairie went to a flex offense to run clock and work toward a lay-up. Genesee was able to go on a 1-14 run that pared the lead down to 13 points. At that point Branson went to the line for a 1 and 1. He made the first and Schlader rebounded the missed second shot which led to another 1 and 1 by Anderson, who also made the first and missed the second. That made it 68-53 with 1:46 left. Prairie’s final 7 points of the game came on free throws out of 15 attempts. It was enough that Genesee never got any closer than the 11-point final margin. Chaffee wound up with 21 points on 7 for 13 shooting with six 3-pointers. Chmelik wound up with 18 points on 9 for 12 shooting. Prairie scored the first 2 points in the game then went stone cold with their shooting as they missed their final 13 shots of the opening quarter to fall behind 2-10. Potlatch scored first in the second quarter to take a 10-point lead then Prairie worked their way back into the game with a 9-2 run. Schlader and Chaffee each scored 3 points with Branson scoring off of a steal by Anderson and Chmelik adding a free throw as the Pirates pulled within 3 at 11-14. They couldn’t get any closer though as Potlatch took a 14-18 lead into the halftime break. Potlatch scored the first 3 points of the third quarter then Prairie took over the rest of the period. Branson hit a 3-pointer to kick off a 13-2 run. A steal by Chmelik led to a Branson lay-up. Chmelik then scored on a lobbed inbounds pass from Branson to tie the game at 21-21. Potlatch scored to take back the lead but Branson then made a 3-pointer to give Prairie their first lead since the opening basket. A free throw by Chmelik and basket by Anderson made it 27-23 after 3 quarters. The big difference between this game and the 21-point win for the Pirates on Jan. 7, was DacotaHaddaler, a husky 6’1” sophomore forward who went from the end of the bench to the starting lineup. Prairie couldn’t stop him when he would get going toward the hoop. He scored 8 points in the fourth quarter for the Loggers including 4 for 4 at the line as the Logger rallied to tie the game in regulation. After a basket by Hadaller tied the score at 36, Schlader sank both ends of a 1 and 1 to give Prairie a 38-36 lead. A minute later Hadaller sank 2 free throws to again tie the score at 38 with 1:13 left. Neither team was able to score in the final minute. In overtime the score remained unchanged until Chmelik scored on a hook shot with 1:31 left to give Prairie a 40-38 lead. With 36 seconds left Potlatch’s Devin Richards sank a 3-pointer to give Potlatch the lead. Prairie worked the ball for a last shot but turned it over and wound up fouling Richards with just 4 seconds left. Richards missed the front end of the 1 and 1 and Prairie rebounded and called timeout with 3 seconds left. They ran a play to get Chaffee a shot but Chaffee mishandled the pass and by the time he got hold of it his shot attempt was blocked as the buzzer sounded. It was the first league loss for the Pirates to someone other than Lapwai since the 2012-13 season. Prairie may have to play Potlatch again in their District opener as the Loggers have the #3 seed. Branson led the Pirates in scoring with 12 points with Schlader and Chmelik adding 10 points each. Chaffee scored 6 on a pair of 3-pointers and Anderson scored 2. Prairie had a 38-36 edge on the boards with Chmelik grabbing 11 and Schlader 10. Chmelik had 4 steals while Anderson had 3. Branson had 5 assists. Prairie was 15 for 53 from the field, 28%, possibly due to some tired legs after a short turnaround from a Friday night road game to a Saturday afternoon home game. They were 6 for 15 at the line, 40%. Potlatch, who didn’t have a game Friday, was 15 for 44 from the field, 34%, and 8 for 9 at the line, 89%. Prairie is now 14-4 on the season and finish league play at 9-3, good for second place. The JV team, which lost a close game at Potlatch in January, won easily 41-18. It was a slow starting game as Prairie led just 8-4 after 1 quarter. Ross heated up in the second quarter with 10 points to lead Prairie to a 21-6 halftime lead. Prairie scored the first 11 points of the quarter. With a 12-6 third quarter Prairie took a 33-12 lead into the final period. Schumacher scored 6 and Shears 5 in the quarter with Tanner Hibbard collecting the remaining point. Prairie built their lead to 41-15 with 5:15 left then went to a spread to run clock and Potlatch was able to score the game’s final 3 points. Ross scored 15 with three 3-pointers, to lead the team in scoring. Schumacher had 12 and Shears 10. Uhlenkott added 3 points and Hibbard 1. Potlatch led on the boards, 25-33. Uhlenkott had 7 to lead the Pirates. Schumacher and Ross each had 5 steals while Uhlenkott added 4. Schumacher had 4 assists and Ross had 3. Schumacher was out with an injury when Prairie lost to Potlatch earlier. The Pirates were 16 for 42 from the field, 38%, and 5 for 10 at the line, 50%. Potlatch was 8 for 32 from the field, 25%, and 1 for 9 at the line, 11%. In the C game Prairie won 49-24.
