Lady
Pirates take second at State
For the third consecutive year the Prairie Lady Pirates have finished second at State, all three times losing to Lapwai in the championship game. They opened the tournament with a 66-26 blowout win over Liberty Charter of Nampa at Columbia High School in Nampa Thursday, Feb. 16. On Friday they knocked off Horseshoe Bend 54-37 to advance to their fourth straight championship game appearance. That game was also at Columbia High School. On Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center, Prairie was defeated by Lapwai 40-79. Kylie Tidwell opened the scoring with a 3-pointer. Chaye Uptmor followed with a free throw and Leah Higgins and India Peery, in her first start of the season, each added a basket for the 8-0 lead. The Patriots finally got on the scoreboard at the 4:17 mark but Prairie then answered with a 10-0 run. After a Patriots free throw, Prairie finished the quarter with 3 more for a 21-3 lead. Defense fueled the offense as Prairie forced 13 first quarter turnovers. It was more of the same in the second quarter as Prairie forced another 9 turnovers even though they pulled off their full-court press in favor of the halfcourt trap. Prairie outscored Liberty Charter 14-5 in the quarter to take a 35-8 halftime lead. Angela Wemhoff was 3 for 4 for 6 points in the quarter and had 9 points at the half. India Peery and Tidwell each had 7 first half points and Leah Higgins had 6. The defensive pressure was backed off even further in the second half but Prairie still outscored the Patriots 14-8 in the third quarter and 18-10 in the fourth. India Peery led the team in scoring with 16 points and added 8 steals and 7 rebounds. Tidwell and Wemhoff scored 11 points each while Leah Higgins scored 8, Josie Peery 7, Sydney Bruner 4, Uptmor 3 and Kodie Tidwell, Sarah Ross and Kendra Duclos 2 each. Wemhoff had 8 rebounds to lead Prairie to a 36-32 edge on the boards. Wemhoff also had 5 steals and 5 assists. Bruner and Leah Higgins had 3 steal each while Jordyn Higgins and Theresa Wemhoff added 3 assists each. Prairie was 28 for 66 from the field, 43%, and 7 for 15 at the line, 47%. Liberty Charter was 9 for 29 from the field, 31%, and 6 for 19 at the line, 32%. Prairie 21 14 13 18 -66 Liberty Charter 3 5 8 10 -26 Prairie-Ky. Tidwell 5-15, 0-0, 11; A. The Mustangs then got a 3-pointer from senior point guard Kate Renfro, who had scored 7 of Horseshoe Bend’s first 15 points. After that Prairie took over. Kylie Tidwell banked in a 10 foot jumper then a steal by Angela Wemhoff led to her scoring a free throw to tie the game at 15 with 1:15 left. Wemhoff then scored inside with 15 seconds left to give Prairie a 17-15 lead at the end of the quarter. Prairie then scored the first 8 points of the second quarter on a basket each by Josie Peery, Angela Wemhoff, India Peery and Chaye Uptmor for a 25-15 lead. Horseshoe Bend then scored a pair of free throws that turned out to be their only points of the quarter. Prairie finished the half with a 7-0 run for a 32-17 halftime lead. A steal by Leah Higgins led to a basket by Jordyn Higgins. A steal by Wemhoff led to a Leah Higgins free throw. Wemhoff drove in for a lay-up and then had another steal that led to another Jordyn Higgins basket. The third quarter saw the Mustangs get back within 10 points at 35-25 thanks to a couple of 3-pointers but Prairie outscored them 10-3 the rest of the quarter to take a 17 point lead into the fourth quarter at 45-28. Wemhoff scored 6 of those 10 points and Bruner had the other 4. In the fourth quarter the two teams each scored 9 points with the Mustangs unable to get any closer than 15. The Mustangs’ Renfro, who willed her team past Valley in the opening round, struggled to bring the ball up the floor against Wemhoff who had 11 steals in the first half, most of them from Renfro. Wemhoff wound up with an unusual double-double with 21 points and 14 steals in the game. She added 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Uptmor, Leah Higgins and Jordyn Higgins each scored 6 points with Bruner and Josie Peery scoring 4 each. India Peery scored 2 and Kodie Tidwell scored 1. Prairie had a 45-38 edge on the boards with Uptmor grabbing 11 rebounds and Josie Peery 10. Jordyn Higgins led in assists with 4. They led 9-6 after a putback by Leah Higgins. Lapwai then scored a pair of baskets to take the lead but Prairie got it back at 11-10 on a basket by Angela Wemhoff. That was Prairie’s final lead of the game as Lapwai scored the final 4 points of the opening quarter to take an 11-14 lead then scored the first 8 of the second quarter to make it 11-22. Leah Higgins scored a pair of free throws but Lapwai then scored the next 7. A 3-pointer by Tidwell made it 16-29 but Lapwai then scored the final 8 of the quarter to take a 16-37 lead at the half. The third quarter was just as bad as Prairie mustered just 4 points on a basket by Leah Higgins and a free throw each by Jordyn Higgins and Josie Peery. Meanwhile Lapwai put 24 points on the board to take a 20-61 lead into the fourth quarter. At that point it was just a matter of what the final score would be as there was no doubt as to the winner. Prairie was able to double their score in the final period and outscored Lapwai 20-18 but it was still the most lopsided of Lapwai’s 4 wins against the Pirates this season. Each successive game against the Wildcats was won by a wider margin. Kylie Tidwell scored 13 points in her final game as a Pirate to lead the team in scoring. Fellow senior Uptmor scored 2. Leah Higgins scored 8, Angela Wemhoff 5, Jordyn Higgins 4, India Peery 3, Bruner and Kodie Tidwell 2 each and Josie Peery 1. Lapwai senior Koyama Young scored 24 to lead the Wildcats despite a gimpy ankle. Junior Emil Mitchel scored 15 and seniors Shiniah Holt and Iris Domebo scored 11 and 10 respectively. Prairie had a 37-33 edge on the boards with Leah Higgins grabbing 8 and Angela Wemhoff 7 to lead the Pirates. Wemhoff had 5 steals and 4 assists. Prairie was 15 for 48 from the field, 31%, and 7 for 15 at the line, 47%. Lapwai was 33 for 58 from the field, 57%, and 6 for 11 at the line, 55%. Prairie ends their season with a 21-4 record, 21-0 against teams not named Lapwai. With the state championship Lapwai ties Prairie and Coeur d’Alene with the most girls state championships at 9. Prairie has to have the most state championship game appearances as they are now 9-8 in those games. Five of those championship game losses have come to Lapwai while Prairie beat Lapwai twice in championship games. Prairie 11 5 4 20 -40 Lapwai 14 23 24 18 -79 Prairie-Ky. Tidwell 6-18, 0-1, 13; A.
