Pirates
open with two wins
The Prairie baseball team opened their season with a pair of league wins beating Nezperce 15-4 at Kamiah Tuesday, March 21 and C.V. 6-1 at Kooskia Thursday, March 23. The game was a pitchers duel early on with Prairie doing most of their damage in the top of the fifth inning. Neither team scored in the first inning as Jace Perrin struck out the side for Prairie. In the second Owen Anderson led off and reached on an error. He went to sent on an errant pickoff through, stole third and then stole home. After two outs in the inning Kamiah changed pitchers due to the new pitch count rule in effect this year. Pitchers are allowed just 60 pitches over a 2-day span and Nezperce was to play Lapwai on Wednesday so changed pitchers about every 30 pitches. With a day off in between games Prairie could let their pitchers go the full 60 pitches. Nezperce tied the game in the bottom of the second after a leadoff walk. The runner then stole second and third and scored on an errant pickoff throw. Prairie took the lead back in the third as Brandon Anderson led off with the game’s first hit. Luke Schwartz followed with a bunt that the catcher threw past the first baseman that allowed Anderson to score all the way from first. After an out Perrin singled home Schwartz to make it 3-1. In the bottom of the third Nezperce got a run on a couple of errors and a single to cut the lead to 3-2. Prairie added 2 more in the fourth after there were 2 outs. After 2 strikeouts Nezperce had to change pitchers again due to the pitch count. Sam Mager then greeted the new pitcher by beating out an infield hit. Mager scored on Brandon Anderson’s triple to the gap in left center. Anderson then scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2. Brandon Anderson took over on the mound to start the fourth and Nezperce added a run after a leadoff double and steal of third. The next batter walked and wound up getting picked off with the run scoring from third. Prairie took a 5-3 lead into the fifth and then things fell apart for Nezperce. Perrin led off with a double to right, stole third and scored on a balk. Damian Forsmann, pinch-hitting for Jake Stubbers, worked a walk and stole second. He scored on Spencer Schumacher’s double to right. Schumacher stole third and scored on another balk. Michael Schwartz walked and he and Mager executed a hit and run that ended up with Schwartz on third and Mager taking second on the throw to third. Brandon Anderson then doubled home both runners. Anderson stole third then Luke Schwartz walked after another pitching change. A wild pitch advanced both runners. Dereck Arnzen and Perrin both walked. Schwartz wound up scoring on a wild pitch. Owen Anderson singled to score Arnzen. Perrin and Owen Anderson both scored to make it 15-4 going into the bottom of the fifth. Anderson gave up a 1 out walk in between a couple of strikeouts.
