Pirates
win 1 of 3
The Prairie baseball team won 1 of 3 games played at the Glenns Ferry Wooden Bat Tournament held Friday and Saturday, April 7-8. On Friday they lost to Soda Springs 5-18 and to Glenns Ferry 2-12. On Saturday they rallied with 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth to beat Declo 3-2. That game was shortened to 5 innings due to weather and the subsequent game against Nampa Christian was cancelled. In the bottom of the first Prairie managed to tie the score without benefit of a hit. Brandon Anderson walked and Damian Forsmann was hit by a pitch. Anderson stole third and scored on a throwing error with Forsmann moving to second. After an out Jake Stubbers was hit by a pitch. He and Forsmann pulled off a delayed double steal with Forsmann scoring the tying run. The Cardinals got to Perrin for 4 more hits and a walk in the second inning and scored 4 more runs to take the lead for good. Prairie could only score 1 in their half of the inning. Sam Mager got Prairie’s first hit on a single to right and Brandon Anderson scored Mager with a single down the left field line. Soda Springs scored 1 in the third, 6 in the fourth and 5 in the fifth while Prairie scored 1 each in the fourth and fifth as the game ended after 5 innings on the 10-run rule. Mager scored Prairie’s run in the fourth after a 2 out walk. He stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a passed ball. Perrin scored the fifth inning run after beating out an infield hit. He stole second and went to third when the catcher’s throw went into centerfield. Perrin then scored on a balk. Prairie had just 3 hits in the game, a single each by Mager, Anderson and Perrin. Perrin pitched into the fourth inning before giving way to Anderson who threw just 6 pitches to get out of the inning. Luke Schwartz took over in the fifth and finished the game. Perrin gave up 14 hits and 13 runs with 5 strikeouts. Anderson gave up 1 hit and struck out 1 in a third of an inning. Schwartz gave up 3 hits and 5 runs with 4 walks. Soda Springs 2 4 1 6 5—18 18 4 Prairie 2 1 0 1 1 – 5 3 2 Prairie had their first lead of the day when Brandon Anderson led off the game with a single up the middle. He stole second and then stole third and scored on Spencer Schumacher’s single up the middle. Owen Anderson started on the mound for Prairie and gave up 2 hits and 2 walks which led to 3 runs in the first inning. Glenns Ferry added 4 more runs in the second off 2 hits, 2 walks and 2 hit batsmen. Schwartz again went to the mound in the third and gave up 1 run on 2 hits. Prairie finally got on the scoreboard again in the fourth when Michael Schwartz, who took over for Dereck Arnzen who reaggravated a knee injury from last summer, hit a 1-out single. Nick Mager followed with a triple to the gap in right center to score Schwartz. Mager then tried to score on a wild pitch but the ball bounced off the back stop right back to the catcher who was able to toss to the pitcher who tagged out Mager. Sam Mager came on in the fourth and gave up 3 runs in the inning on 2 hits, a walk and hit batsman which made the score 2-11. Sam Mager was still on the mound in the bottom of the fifth and walked the leadoff hitter. After a stolen base and then a comebacker for an out moved the runner to third, coach David Shears had the next two batters intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a force at any base. A good strategy but Glenns Ferry got a base hit to bring in the game-ending run. Owen Anderson allowed 7 runs on 4 hits with 4 walks, 2 hit batsmen and a strikeout in two innings.. Luke Schwartz gave up 1 run on 2 hits with a strikeout in 1 inning. Mager gave up 4 runs on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts, 4 walks (2 intentional) and a hit batter in 1 1/3 innings. Prairie had 5 hits with Nick Mager collecting an RBI triple with Brandon Anderson, Perrin, Schumacher and Michael Schwartz each adding a single. Prairie 1 0 0 1 0— 2 5 2 Glenns Ferry 3 4 1 3 1—12 9 1 The weather didn’t seem to both the pitchers as it was a pitcher’s duel with just 6 hits combined between the 2 teams. Schumacher had his stuff working , except when he faced the Declo leadoff hitter. Schumacher gave up a leadoff hit on his first pitch of the game then struck out the next 8 hitters. With 2 outs in the third the leadoff hitter again got a single on the first pitch from Schumacher. A hit batsman and another single followed with an error thrown in that led to Declo’s only 2 runs of the game. Schumacher then struck out the next 5 batters before giving up a single to the #9 batter. A big pickoff play ensued with catcher Brandon Anderson throwing behind the runner and shortstop Nick Mager eventually tagging out the runner on the way back to first. That was big as it emptied the bases for the leadoff hitter, who picked up his third hit off Schumacher and wound up at second when the ball got misplayed in left. Schumacher then got his 14th strikeout to end the inning. In between the top and the bottom of the inning the tournament officials met with the coaches and decided the game would end after five innings due to the field getting too wet to play and the following game between Prairie and Nampa Christian would be cancelled. Schumacher led off the inning and drew a walk. After an out Damian Forsmann pinch-hit for Jon Halligan and also drew a walk. Sam Sam Mager was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Brandon Anderson. Declo changed pitches and Anderson wound up striking out on a nasty curveball. That brought Perrin to the plate. He hit a hard grounder to the shortstop who made a wide throw to first for an error that allowed both Forsmann and Mager to score and give Prairie the win. Prairie scored 3 runs with just 1 hit, a single by Anderson in the first inning. Schumacher gave up 5 hits and 2 runs with no walks and 1 hit batter. 14 of the 15 outs he recorded came on strikeouts. The 15th out was the pickoff play in the top of the fifth. Prairie is now 3-2 on the season. Declo 0 0 2 0 0—2 5 1 Prairie 0 0 0 0 3—3 1 2
