Pirates win twice
The Prairie Lady Pirates jumped out to a 2-0 start to the season with wins over the Lewiston JV 53-22, and Genesee in their league opener, 72-48, both at Cottonwood. The score was tied at 8-8 with 2:00 left in the third when Wemhoff scored on a driving lay-up and Josie Peery followed with a free throw to make it 11-8 at the quarter break. Two free throws by Wemhoff and a free throw by her sister Theresa Wemhoff made ti 14-8 early in the second quarter. After Lewiston had scored a pair of free throws to make it 17-12 is when Prairie took control. Prairie finished the half with a 21-3 run. Angela Wemhoff scored 15 of those 21 points with the defense setting up the offense with steals. Prairie forced 15 second quarter turnovers with nearly all of them via steals. Angela Wemhoff had 11 steals in the first half. Prairie’s defensive dominance in the second quarter is illustrated by the fact that Lewiston was just 1 for 2 from the field in the quarter. 5 of their 7 second quarter points came at the free throw line. Prairie backed off on the defensive trap in the second half but still held the Bengals to just 7 points total. For the game Prairie forced 41 turnovers, 27 in the first half alone. Angela Wemhoff led the way with 28 points on 12 for 17 shooting, 8 for 9 in the second quarter. Sydney Bruner was the second leading scorer with 6 points. India Peery, Theresa Wemhoff and Josie Peery added 5 points each. Jordyn Higgins scored 3 and Leah Higgins 1. Josie Peery led Prairie in rebounds with 7 with Angela Wemhoff, Leah Higgins and Alexis Hiler adding 5 each as Prairie held a 32-27 edge on the boards. Angela Wemhoff had an unusual double-double with 12 steals to go with her 28 points. Theresa Wemhoff added 4 steals with Jordyn Higgins and Leah Higgins adding 3 each. Theresa Wemhoff had 4 assists while Leah Higgins had 3. Prairie was 20 for 46 from the field, 43%, and 13 for 24 at the line, 54%. Lewiston was 6 for 25 from the field, 24%, and 9 for 22 at the line, 41%. Prairie also won the JV game by a score of 43-24. Kodie Tidwell scored 5 of Prairie’s 10 first quarter points to stake Prairie to a 10-7 lead. Madison Shears scored 7 of her 9 first half points on 3 for 3 shooting in the second quarter. Lewiston took a brief 10-11 lead in the second quarter then Prairie put together a 10-0 run with 7 of those points, including a 3-pointer, by Shears. Prairie led 20-12 at the half. The third quarter scoring was more spread out as Shears, Tidwell and Kendra Duclos each scored 4 points and Ellea Uhlenkott added 3 and Sydnee Bruegeman 2 as Prairie took a 37-23 lead into the fourth quarter. Prairie outscored Lewiston 6-1 in the fourth quarter. Shears wound up with 13 points to lead the scoring with Tidwell also in double figures with 11. Uhlenkott scored 5, Duclos 4, Bruegeman 3, Hope McIntire, Kyleigh Duclos and Halle Klapprich 2 each and Ciara Chaffee 1. Kendra Duclos had 8 rebounds and Klapprich 7 although Lewiston held the rebounding edge 41-48. Tidwell and McIntire had 4 steals each with Kyleigh Duclos adding 3. Uhlenkott had 4 assists and Shears had 3. Prairie was 17 for 47 from the field, 36%, and 8 for 22 at the line, also 36%. Lewiston was 8 for 54 from the field, 15%, and 6 for 15 from the line, 40%. Prairie jumped all over the Bulldogs with their full-court trap in the first quarter as they raced out to a 22-4 lead by the end of the quarter. They outscored the Bulldogs 19-10 in the second quarter to take a 41-14 halftime lead. The Lady Pirates had 24 steals in the first half alone and wound up with 31 for the game as they backed off on the defensive intensity in the second half. Genesee actually outscored Prairie in the second half 31-34. Prairie had 5 players score in double figures led by Angela Wemhoff and Jordyn Higgins with 14 points each. Leah Higgins added 11 and Theresa Wemhoff and Bruner scored 10 points each. India Peery added 8 points and 12 steals while Leah Higgins had a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds. Others scoring were Hiler with 3, Josie Peery and Kristyna Krogh with 2 each and Sarah Ross with 1 point. Prairie also easily won the JV game 62-26.
