Pirates win big at Grangeville
In one of the more lopsided games in the entire history of their play against each other, the Prairie Girls Basketball team swamped Grangeville 57-17 at Grangeville Tuesday, Nov. 21. Angela Wemhoff led the scoring for the Pirates, outscoring the opposing team for the second time in three games, with 25 points. The game was competitive for the first 4 minutes. Wemhoff got Prairie started with a basket and a pair of free throws but Grangeville answered with a pair of baskets to tie the game at 4-4 at the 4:30 mark. That was it for Grangeville though as Prairie scored 20 straight points. It started with a driving lay-up by Wemhoff. Josie Peery added a free throw, as did Wemhoff. Wemhoff scored another basket. India Peery scored after stealing the ball and then stole the ball again with Theresa Wemhoff scoring. Josie Peery scored on a putback and a steal by Angela Wemhoff that led to a lay-up closed out the first quarter at 18-4. A basket each by India Peery, Angela Wemhoff and Kristyna Krogh opened the second quarter and competed the 20-0 run for a 24-4 lead. Grangeville couldn’t handle Prairie’s full-court trap, leading to 19 first half turnovers, and when the could get the ball into the half court, couldn’t score as they hit just 3 of 14 first half shots. Alexis Hiler scored a pair of baskets for a 28-6 lead and Grangeville closed with first half scoring with a pair of free throws to make it 28-8. Grangeville scored the first 4 points of the second quarter then the onslaught returned as Prairie scored the next 29 straight points. Grangeville committed another 13 turnovers in the third quarter and wound up with 40 in the game. Angela Wemhoff scored 13 points in the first half and nearly equaled that in the third quarter as she hit 6 of 7 attempts for 12 more points. She played only the first couple of minutes of the fourth quarter. The game had a running clock in the fourth quarter as Prairie took a 51-12 lead into the final frame. Subs played most of the fourth quarter and everyone who got on the floor for the Lady Pirates scored. In addition to Angela’s 25 points, India Peery scored 8. Hiler scored 6, Jordyn Higgins 5, Theresa Wemhoff 4, Josie Peery 3 and Sydney Bruner, Krogh and Sarah Ross each scored 2. Josie Peery had 9 rebounds to lead Prairie to a 29-26 rebounding edge. Angela Wemhoff had another steals-points double-double with 10 steals. She also led in assists with 6. Theresa Wemhoff added 5 steals and Jordyn Higgins and India Peery had 4 each. Josie Peery added 3 assists. Prairie was 26 for 55 from the field, 47%, and 5 for 15 at the line, 33%. Grangeville was 7 for 24 from the field, 29%, and 2 for 2 at the line, 100%. Prairie had just 13 turnovers in the game compared to Grangeville’s 40. Prairie is now 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play. The JV team also rolled to a big win, 38-23, over the Bulldogs. Prairie didn’t light up the scoreboard in the first quarter but their 8 points were 8 more than what Grangeville was able to score. Kodie Tidwell, Hope McIntire, Kendra Duclos and Ciara Chaffee each scored 2 points in the opening quarter. Grangeville got on the scored board in the second quarter but not until Prairie had taken a 12-0 lead on a basket each by Duclos and McIntire. Duclos added 2 more baskets and a free throw to put Prairie up 17-5 and a free throw by Chaffee made it 18-7 at the half. Madison Shears took over in the third quarter. After being held scoreless in the first half, and sitting out much of the second quarter after getting hurt, she scored 10 of Prairie’s 16 third quarter points. Tidwell, Duclos and Brooklyn Riener each added a basket as Prairie took a 34-11 lead in the fourth quarter. Grangeville rallied in the fourth, outscoring Prairie 4-12, but it wasn’t near enough to get back into the game. Shears wound up with 14 points to lead the scoring. Duclos scored 11 with Tidwell scoring 6, Chaffee 3 and McIntire and Riener 2 each. Chaffee had 10 rebounds to lead Prairie to a 41-28 advantage on the boards. Duclos added 9 and Tidwell 8. Shears had 6 steals while Duclos and Tidwell added 2 each. McIntire, Shears, Tidwell and Chaffee each had 2 assists. Prairie was 16 for 51 from the field, 31%, and 6 for 22 at the line, 27%.
