Pirates win at Asotin
The Prairie Pirates pulled out a 67-59 win at Asotin Tuesday, Dec. 19, to finish the 2017 portion of their schedule.
Asotin came out strong against the Pirates and built an 8-13 lead in the first quarter. Hunter Chaffee makes a pass in the game at Asotin.
A basket by Spencer Schumacher ignited a 9-0 run by the Pirates that gave them their first lead. Devin Ross and Dylan Schumacher each followed with a basket and Hunter Chaffee sank a 3 following a steal by Ross to make it 17-13.
Asotin hit a 3-pointer to trim the lead to 17-16 at the quarter break.
Spencer Schumacher converted a 3-point play after driving in for a lay-up to open the second quarter scoring.
After an Asotin basket Dylan Schumacher sank a 3-pointer and Damian Forsmann scored inside. Dylan added a free throw to make it 26-18.
Asotin scored a basket and 2 free throws to cut the lead in half but Prairie answered with a 10-0 run. Chaffee started it with a basket inside. Owen Anderson, who started in place of Nick Mager who did not make the trip, added a basket. 
Ross then blocked a shot where he basically just took the ball away from the shooter, then drove the court for a basket. Anderson added a free throw and Dylan Schumacher added another 3 to complete the run and make it 36-22.
Asotin responded by scoring the final 7 points of the half to pull within 7 at 36-29.
Asotin then scored the first 5 points of the second half, thanks to a couple of inbounds pass steals by Thomas Martin, to cut the lead to just 2 points at 36-34.
A basket by Anderson inside pushed the lead to 4 but Asotin pulled to within 1 on a 3 by Devin Fry.
Chaffee answered with a pair of baskets, the second when he rebounded his own miss on a transition play to make it 42-37.
Asotin then put together a 1-7 run to take their first lead since the 2:40 mark of the first quarter at 43-44 with 2:45 left in the third.
Chaffee scored a pair of free throws to put Prairie back on top and the fed Spencer Schumacher down low for a basket.
Asotin answered with a basket but Prairie closed out the quarter with a driving lay-up after a steal by Dylan Schumacher and basket inside by Spencer Schumacher for a 51-46 lead after 3 quarters.
Dylan Schumacher scored a free throw and Chaffee a basket on a full-court inbound feed from Dylan Schumacher to make it 54-46.
Asotin got back within 5 before a 7-0 run by Prairie pushed the lead back to double figures at 63-52. Dylan Schumacher sank both ends of a 1 and 1. Spencer Schumacher then hit a basket. Chaffee added a free throw and Ross a basket for the 7 points.
Asotin scored 4 at the line to cut the lead to 7 but Spencer Schumacher was fouled on a putback and converted the free throw to push the lead back to 10 at 66-56 with 46 seconds to play.
A Chaffee free throw and an Asotin 3 closed out the game’s scoring.
Spencer Schumacher scored 19 to lead 3 Pirates in double figures as Chaffee added 15 and Dylan Schumacher 14. Ross scored 8, Forsmann 6 and Anderson 5.
Asotin had a 29-31 rebounding edge. Spencer Schumacher made it a double-double with 15 rebounds.
Dylan Schumacher had 3 steals and Spencer Schumacher had 5 assists while Ross had 4.
Prairie was 26 for 47 from the field, 55%, and 11 for 22 at the line, 50%. Asotin was 21 for 54 from the field, 39%, and 10 for 15 at the line, 67%.
Prairie is 5-1 overall and 2-1 in league play heading into the Christmas break. Their next game will be at home against Asotin on Tuesday, Jan. 2.
The JV team also won, in similar fashion to the varsity.
Prairie fell behind early on 0-6 and 5-9 before rallying with a 10-0 run to finish the first quarter and take a 19-16 lead.
Cole Schlader scored 8 of the 10 points in that run with Tanner Hibbard scoring the other 2. Schlader had three 3-pointers in the opening quarter and 13 points.
Asotin scored first in the second quarter to pull within 1 but Taylor Ott banked in a 3-pointer.
Asotin got back within 2 after a 3-pointer at 24-22 with 4:35 left in the half. Prairie then closed out the second quarter with a 6-0 run for a 30-22 lead at the break. Ott and Schlader each scored 3 of those 6 points.
Schlader then opened the third quarter scoring with a 3-pointer but then went ice-cold.
Fortunately Sam Mager, who couldn’t buy a basket in the first half, picked up the scoring slack with 10 second half points as he hit his final 5 shots of the game.
The teams traded baskets through most of the third quarter with Prairie taking a 41-31 lead into the fourth.
Asotin twice got within 7 in the fourth quarter but Mager answered with a basket each time.
Ott then closed out the scoring with a tip-in just before the buzzer.
Schlader wound up with 19 points to lead the scoring with Ott and Mager adding 10 points each. David Wassmuth scored 4 and Hibbard and John Gehring scored 2 each.
Prairie had a 41-40 edge on the boards led by Mager who had 14 rebounds at 5’9”. Ott added 8 rebounds and Hibbard 7.
Schlader had 6 steals and 6 assists while Hibbard had 4 of each.
Prairie was 20 for 51 from the field, 39%, and 2 for 6 at the line, 33%. Asotin was 14 for 55 from the field, 25%, and 3 for 9 at the line, 33%.
The JVs are 4-2 on the season.
