The Prairie boys basketball team won a pair of low-scoring league games this past week, 36-28 at Potlatch on Friday, Feb. 9 and 37-29 over Genesee on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Cottonwood, then avenged an earlier loss at Moscow, 55-52, Monday Feb. 12. Prairie started well against the Loggers as a steal by Damian Forsmann led to a basket by Hinter Chaffee to open the game. After Potlatch tied it, Spencer Schumacher scored inside and Chaffee sank a 3-pointer. Nick Mager then swished a pair of free throws for a 9-2 lead. Prairie twice more went inside to Schumacher to take a 13-4 lead. Potlatch scored a pair of free throws to make it 13-6 at the end of the quarter. The Pirates struggled to score in the second quarter although Mager added 2 more free throws to make it 15-6 early in the second quarter. The Loggers struggled to score as well as they got on the board for the first time at the 3:35 mark to make it 15-8. They then scored a basket and a 3-pointer to pull within 2 points at 15-13 with 1:21 left. Prairie finally scored their first basket on what has become a signature for Spencer Schumacher, a buzzer beating 3 pointer that made it 18-13 at the half. Potlatch slowed the pace way down in the quarter as evidenced by the fact there were only 11 shots attempted in the second quarter, 5 by Prairie and 6 by Potlatch. The slow pace continued in the third quarter as Prairie’s only points came on a pair of baskets by Devin Ross. He was 2 for 2 in the quarter while the rest of the team was 0 for 4. Potlatch hit 4 of 9 shots in the quarter to pull within 1 at 20-19 and again at 22-21 with 1:43 left in the quarter. Neither team scored again in the period. Potlatch took their first lead of the game at the 7:03 mark of the fourth quarter. The lead didn’t last long though as Spencer Schumacher scored a putback 20 seconds later to put the Pirates back on top. A 3-point play by Chaffee following a steal by Mager made it 27-23 with 6:24 left. Potlatch cut the lead back to 2 with a basket at the 4:47 mark. A free throw by Chaffee and a basket each by Schumacher and Ross made it 32-25 with 2:36 left. Potlatch scored a free throw but Mager answered with a pair of free throws, making him 6 for 6 at the line in the game. Potlatch scored with 1:16 left to pull within 6 but wouldn’t score again. Chaffee closed out the scoring with a pair of free throw with 18 seconds left. Spencer Schumacher scored 13 to lead the scoring with Chaffee adding 11 and Mager and Ross 6 each. Prairie had a 24-15 edge on the boards with Mager grabbing 7 to lead the team while Ross and Schumacher had 6 each. Mager had 5 steals and 6 assists. Prairie was 11 for 25 from the field, 44%, and 10 of 12 at the line, 83%. Potlatch was 12 for 35 from the field, 31%, and 3 of 4 at the line, 75%. Prairie also won the JV game 46-38. Tayler Ott got Prairie off to a strong start with a lay-up and a 3-pointer for a 5-2 lead. Potlatch came back to take a 7-10 lead then Cole Schlader took over. Schlader tied it with a 3-pointer then stole the ball and scored to put Prairie back on top. After Potlatch tied it, Schlader scored 2 more lay-ups, the second after another steal, to put Prairie up 16-12 at the end of the opening quarter. Sam Mager sank a 3 to open the second quarter scoring. After a Logger score, Schlader hit a 3 and Mager sank 2 free throws for a 24-14 lead. Prairie led by 9 at the half, 30-21. Potlatch got within 5 in the third quarter but a reverse lay-up by Derik Shears, a 3-point play by Ott and a basket by Schlader gave Prairie their biggest lead at 37-25. Potlatch outscored Prairie 1-6 the rest of the quarter to pull within 38-31 after 3 quarters. Schlader drove for a lay-up to start the fourth quarter scoring but Potlatch answered with a 1-7 run to cut the lead to 41-38 with 2:35 left. Potlatch was unable to score again though as Mager scored a basket and Ott scored a basket and a free throw to close out the game. Schlader scored 20 to lead all scorers with Ott adding 13 points, Mager 11 and Shears 2. Potlatch controlled the boards 23-41 with Ott grabbing 8 to lead Prairie. Schlader had 9 steals and 4 assists. Prairie was 17 for 55 from the field, 31%, and 8 for 14 at the line, 57%. Potlatch was 16 for 35 from the field, 46%, and 5 for 10 at the line, 50%. Prairie made up for the rebound deficit by forcing 28 Logger turnovers compared to just 10 for the Pirates. 22 of the turnovers came by way of steals. Genesee scored the game’s first 3 points with Spencer Schumacher finally breaking the ice for the Pirates with a bank shot down low at the 3:58 mark. Genesee added 2 free throws before Chaffee got a basket at the 2:25 mark. A Genesee 3 was followed by a Chaffee basket off a great pass from Spencer Schumacher. Forsmann then gave prairie their first lead with a 3-pointer at the 50 second mark. Genesee tied it with a free throw to make it 9-9 after 1 quarter. Scoring alternated in the second quarter with Genesee scoring then Prairie tying it at 11, 13 and 15. Prairie finally took the lead back when Chaffee sank a 3-pointer with 1:08 left. A steal by Chaffee led to a pair of free throws that gave Prairie a 20-15 lead at the half. Genesee scored the first 2 baskets of the third quarter to pull within 1 at 20-19. Prairie then started to take advantage of Spencer Schumacher inside as Mager assisted on a lay-up then Chaffee passed to him for a turn-around shot from the right side and Dylan Schumacher passed to him on an inbounds play for a lay-up to make it 26-19 with 18 seconds left in the quarter. Genesee answered with a 3 to pull back within 26-22 at the end of the quarter. The Bulldogs opened the fourth quarter with a 2-7 run to take the lead with 4:40 left to play at 28-29. At the 3:50 mark Chaffee found the range on a 3-pointer to put Prairie back on top and the Pirates held Genesee scoreless the rest of the way while Spencer Schumacher and Forsmann each scored inside and Mager sank a pair of free throws for the final 8-point margin. Chaffee scored 16 to lead the scoring with Spencer Schumacher adding 14 points. Forsmann scored 5 and Mager 2. Genesee had nobody score more than 7 points. Of note for the Bulldogs, Kolby Moser, the Genesee quarterback who broke a finger on his left hand early in the state football championship game, made his first appearance of the basketball season and scored 4 points before appearing to injure his left hand again. Prairie held a 32-29 rebounding edge led by Ross and Spencer Schumacher with 8 each. Ross had 2 steals and 3 assists while Mager had 4 assists. Prairie was 15 for 42 from the field, 36%, and 4 for 6 at the line, 67%. Genesee was 9 for 39 from the field, 23%, and 8 for 11 at the line, 73%. All 11 free throws were in the first half. The JV team had an easier time of it with a 57-28 win. Prairie opened the game with a 16-0 run with Sam Mager scoring 6 of those points, Ott 4 and Schlader and Shears 3 each. Genesee finally got on the scoreboard at the 3 minute mark and actually outscored Prairie 7-9 the rest of the opening quarter as Prairie led 23-9 at the end of the period. Prairie quickly pushed the lead out to 23 in the second quarter with a 9-0 run to open things. Hayden Uhlenkott scored 5, including a 3-pointer while Tanner Hibbard and Schlader added 2 each. Genesee finally scored in the quarter on a 3 with 2:05 left. John Gehring quickly answered that with a corner 3 and Tyler Wemhoff added a basket to make it 37-12. Another 3 by Genesee made it 37-15 at the half. Prairie led 49-23 after 3 quarters with Shears scoring 4 points and Ott, Mager, Schlader and Hibbard adding 2 each. Wemhoff added 4 points in the fourth with Hibbard adding 2 and Guilherme Acciardi scoring 2 on a putback. For the game Schlader led the scoring with 12 points with Shears scoring 9, Mager 8, Ott, Hibbard and Wemhoff 6 each, Uhlenkott 5, Gehring 3 and Acciardi 2. Prairie had a 40-23 advantage on the boards led by Ott and Hibbard with 8 each. Schlader and Hibbard had 3 steals each while Schlader had 7 assists. Prairie was 26 for 58 from the field, 45%, and 1 for 4 at the line, 25%. Genesee was 10 for 37 from the field, 27%, and 4 for 5 at the line, 80%. Ross broke out of a shooting funk he had been in the last couple of games in a big way with 26 points to lead the Pirates to the win. He also added 9 rebounds. Prairie led just 12-11 at the end of the first quarter and the score was tied at 19-19 at halftime. Prairie edged past Moscow into a 34-33 lead after 3 quarters then outscored the Bears 21-19 in the fourth quarter for the 4-point win. Chaffee, who was shut out of the scoring column in the loss to Moscow earlier, came up with 14 points this time. Nick Mager added 7 points with Spencer Schumacher scoring 5 and Forsmann 3. Prairie outrebounded the Bears 25-20 and had just 10 turnovers in the game. The Pirates improved to 15-3 on the season and are 9-2 in league play, which locks them into the #2 seed to District.
