Lady
Pirates suffer first loss
The Prairie Lady Pirates suffered their first loss of the season when they fell 2-13 at Colton Thursday, March 29. Colton is a perennial state championship contender among Washington schools in their division. Prairie started well as Josie Peery led off with a single to left and stole second. She scored when Sarah Ross doubled to the gap in left center. Ross moved to third on Sydney Bruner’s groundout to second and scored on Kodie Tidwell’s single to left. Unfortunately that was it offensively until the fifth inning. Colton came right back in their half of the first inning and got a single, double and another single from their first 3 batters for 2 runs before the Pirates were able to get an out. Prairie almost had a second out when Josie Peery was unable to come up with a foul pop-up. That was big as that same batter hit a 2-run homer over the fence in left to make it 2-4. Successive groundouts to Noelle Uhlenkott at third got Prairie out of the inning. Sierah Poxleitner reached on an error in the second but wound up being the only baserunner. Colton came up with 5 runs in the second. A 1-out single was followed by another 2-run homer to left. A bloop single behind shortstop, an infield single and an error led to another run. An infield hit loaded the bases and a 2-run single made it 2-7 after 2 innings. Prairie got their first two runners on in the third inning as Ross and Bruner both singled. After a strikeout, Colton got out of the inning when Higgins hit a grounder right to the third baseman, who tagged third for the force and then threw to first for a double play. Colton got a leadoff hit in the bottom of the third but Higgins then got 3 straight outs. Prairie was unable to score in the fourth and Colton added 4 more runs on an error, double, 2 walks and 2 singles to take a 2-13 lead into the fifth. Prairie tried to extend the game in the fifth as Josie Peery walked to lead off the inning. An illegal pitch moved her to second. Uhlenkott grounded out at Peery went to third. Peery scored when Ross hit a sacrifice fly to center. Prairie still needed another run to extend the game but it ended with the next batter. Prairie wound up with 5 hits in the game. Ross had a double and a single and 2 RBI. Tidwell had a single and an RBI and Josie Peery and Bruner each had a single. Higgins gave up 13 hits and 13 runs with 2 walks and 1 strikeout. Prairie goes into Spring Break with a 2-1 record, 2-0 in league play. Prairie 2 0 0 0 1— 3 5 1 Colton 4 5 0 4 x—13 13 1 Both ends of a groundout. At right, Noelle Uhlenkott throws to first after fielding a grounder. At left, Sydney Bruner stretches to catch Uhlenkott’s throw.
