Pirates
win 3 of 5 games
The Prairie baseball team won 3 of 5 games this past week, all league games. They lost 8-11 to Genesee on Tuesday, April 24 at Cottonwood. On Thursday, April 26, they swept a doubleheader at Kendrick, 13-1 and 15-9. Finally on Saturday, April 28, they split a doubleheader at Potlatch, 1-5 and 7-6. With just one league game left to play against C.V. on Thursday, Prairie is 10-3 in league play, good for third place. By beating C.V. Prairie would go to District as the #2 seed, which automatically qualifies them for State. With a loss they would host a play-in game on Tuesday against the #6 seed for a berth in the final 4 at District and a berth at State. Genesee’s first 6 batters all reached base against starter Sam Mager on a single, double, hit batsman, walk, double and error with 5 runs scoring. A strikeout was followed by a groundout that let a 6th run score. A walk, double, hit batsman and double led to 2 more runs scoring before the final out was made. Prairie went down in order in their half of the inning. Despite the ugly start, Mager pitched 3 1/3 more innings of shutout ball, pitching into and out of trouble while stranding 9 baserunners. Prairie started to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the second. Dereck Arnzen doubled with 1 out. Owen Anderson was hit by a pitch and Jace Perrin singled to load the bases. Nick Mager doubled to right to score both Arnzen and Anderson. In the third inning Tate Berdoy hit a 1-out double to right, stole third and came on in to score when the catcher’s throw to third went into left field. In the fourth Anderson led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. Nick Mager walked and then stole second. When the throw went through to second, Anderson stole home to cut the deficit to 4-8. In the fifth Spencer Schumacher doubled with 2 outs and Arnzen followed with a 2-run homer to right center to cut the deficit to just 2 runs at 6-8. In the top of the fifth Sam Mager loaded the bases on 2 walks and an error and Berdoy was brought in to get out of the inning with a strikeout and groundout. Genesee got to Berdoy in the sixth with a 2-out rally. A leadoff walk was followed by a pair of outs. After a hit batsman, Genesee’s best hitter, Coy Stout, was walked to load the bases and set up a force at any base. That strategy backfired when cleanup hitter Kolby Moser singled up the middle to score2 runs. Another single led to a third run scoring and Genesee was back on top by 5 at 6-11. Prairie got back within 3 in the bottom of the sixth as Perrin singled and Nick Mager walked. Genesee put Moser in to pitch at that points and after Dean Johnson moved up the runners with a groundout, Sam Mager singled to score both runners. Dalton Ross then hit a flyball to center that coach David Shears was sure was going to fall in, so he had Mager heading for third. The Genesee centerfielder made a great catch and was able to double off Mager at second to end the inning. Berdoy gave up a leadoff single in the seventh and Spencer Schumacher brought in to finish the inning. Schumacher gave up a walk and a hit batsman to load the bases but then got out of the inning with a strikeout. Prairie was able to get the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with 1 out against Moser as Schumacher walks and Arnzen singled. A balk moved up the runners to second and third.
