Pirates win 2 of 3
The Prairie Lady Pirates won 2 of their 3 league softball games played this past week. They started with a 5-7 home loss to Genesee on Tuesday, April 24. On Thursday, April 26 they beat Lapwai 24-6. Finally on Saturday, April 28 they won at Potlatch by a score of 18-4. Genesee tied it in the fourth but Prairie took the lead back at 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth Genesee tied it and in the sixth they pushed 2 runs across to take the lead while Prairie was unable to score in the final 3 innings. Prairie was limited to 7 hits with Sydney Bruner collecting 3 singles. Sarah Ross had a single and a homer. Leah Higgins and Alexis Hiler each had a single. Leah Higgins gave up 7 runs on 14 hits. Genesee 0 0 3 1 1 2 0—7 14 0 Prairie 0 0 4 1 0 0 0—5 7 1 Lapwai actually outhit the Pirates 5-8 but Prairie pitcher Higgins only gave up 2 walks and Prairie committed no errors. Lapwai meanwhile walked 16, hit 3 and committed 10 errors which led to Prairie sending 9 or more hitters to the plate in 3 of the 4 innings they were on offense. Lapwai got to Higgins for a walk, single and double and 2 runs in the opening inning for a 0-2 lead. In the bottom of the inning Josie Peery walked on 4 pitches to lead off the inning. She stole second and went to third on an error and then scored on Noelle Uhlenkott’s double to left. Ross walked with Uhlenkott advancing to third on a passed ball on ball 4. Bruner reached on an error with both Uhlenkott and Ross scoring. Bruner stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. She scored when Higgins reached on an error. India Peery was hit by a pitch. Sierah Poxleitner grounded to third for a force on Higgins but the subsequent throw to first went into foul territory with Peery scoring and Poxleitner advancing to third as Prairie took a 5-2 lead. Lapwai picked up another run in the second on a leadoff single and wild pitch. The runner scored on a swinging strike 3 in the dirt where the ball got past the catcher. Prairie made it 8-3 with a 3-run second inning. Josie Peery and Uhlenkott each walked to start the inning. Peery scored when Ross grounded out to second. Bruner walked and stole second and a wild pitch scored Uhlenkott with Bruner going to third. Another wild pitch scored Bruner. Lapwai scored 2 more in the third to pull within 5-8. A leadoff walk was followed by a double and a single worth 2 runs. Prairie sent 10 batters to the plate in the third inning. Poxleitner led off with a walk. Hiler followed with what should have been a force at second but turned into an error with the runners winding up on second and third. Poxleitner scored on a wild pitch and a pitch later, Hiler scored on a wild pitch as Josie Peery worked a walk. Uhlenkott walked on 4 pitches and Ross reached on an error as Peery wound up scoring. After an out, Kodie Tidwell collected Prairie’s second hit of the game, a single just out of reach of the shortstop near the left field foul line. Both Uhlenkott and Ross scored with Tidwell winding up at second after the throw home. Higgins walked and India Peery singled up the middle to score Tidwell. A double play ended the inning with Prairie up 14-5. Higgins got Lapwai out in order in the fourth and then Prairie put the game away with a 10-run fourth inning. There were only 2 hits in the 10-run inning. The first was a 2-run triple by Higgins, who was the 7th batter of the inning and the other was an RBI single by Sydnee Bruegeman, who was the 12th batter of the inning. There were 5 walks, 2 hit batsmen and 3 more batters that reached on errors. With no 15-run rule in effect for the game, Lapwai got to bat in the fifth and added 1 more run on a double and single. Prairie ended the game on a pickoff play at third base catcher Kodie Tidwell threw to shortstop Josie Peery on a planned play. Higgins gave up 6 runs on 8 hits with just 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. Prairie had 5 hits with Higgins having a triple and 3 RBI, Uhlenkott a double and an RBI, Tidwell a single and 2 RBI and India Peery and Bruegeman with a single and an RBI each. Ross and Bruner each had an RBI as well. Lapwai 2 1 2 0 1— 6 8 10 Prairie 5 3 6 10 x—24 5 0 Prairie scored 3 in the first inning, 4 in the second, 1 in the third and 5 in the fourth and took a 13-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth. Potlatch scored 3 in the fifth to force Prairie to play another inning. The Pirates added 5 runs in the top of the sixth and shut out Potlatch in the bottom of that inning to end the game on the 10-run rule. Higgins allowed 4 runs on 6 hits with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Prairie pounded out 13 hits led by Ross who had 3 singles. Uhlenkott, Tidwell and India Peery each had 2 singles. Madison Shears had the game’s only extra base hit with a triple and Josie Peery, Bruner and Higgins each had a single. Prairie is now 9-2 overall and 9-1 in league play with only 2 league games left to play, 1 each against Genesee and Potlatch. If they win at least one of those games they will have a bye into the final four at District, which will be played Tuesday, May 8 at Genesee.
