What
is diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition affecting the body’s ability to use energy. A non diabetic's body turns carbohydrates, we get from food, into glucose. Blood cells need insulin to take in glucose, which is then converted into energy. Insulin is a hormone, produced by beta cells inside of the pancreas. A diabetic’s pancreas does not produce insulin or their body can not use insulin. When this happens the cells do not get any glucose. The glucose has nowhere to go and starts to build up in the bloodstream. This causes damage to tiny blood vessels in the kidneys, heart, eyes, and nervous system. As of yet there is still no cure for diabetes, but new technology is helping people manage their diabetes better every day.
