Pirates take second at District
The Lady Pirates wound up taking second at District as they lost to Troy 10-25, 9-25 and 21-25 Wednesday, Oct. 17 at the LCSC Activity Center. Prairie never led in the first game and were in it at 3-3 when Troy started to pull away. Troy had a couple of 2 point service runs to take a 4-9 lead and then broke it open with 7 straight points by freshman Morgan Blazzard that made it 5-16. Prairie was unable to score a single point while they were serving in the game. The second game started even worse as Troy took leads of 0-7 and 1-12. Prairie finally scored their first service point when Alexis Hiler served an ace to make it 4-14, but Troy then scored the sideout. Prairie got a second point while serving when Theresa Wemhoff scored an ace to make it 7-19. Otherwise the game was all Troy. In the third game Prairie was able to put up a fight. They took their first lead of the match when Hiler served an ace to make it 3-2. They again took leads of 4-3 on a sideout kill by Wemhoff and at 5-4 on a sideout kill by Kristyna Krogh. Ellea Poxleitner followed with a kill to make it 6-4. Troy then asserted themselves again and took a 6-9 lead. A missed served and a push by Hope Schwartz closed the gap to 8-9 but Troy then pushed the lead to as many as 7 at 11-18. Prairie was able to close back within 3 at 17-20 after a block by Hiler and an ace by Madison Shears. They then got to within 2 at 19-21 on a sideout kill by Krogh followed by an ace from her. After a missed serve, Troy took a 19-24 lead. Schwartz scored a kill to stave off one match point and a tip by Wemhoff saved another before Troy’s junior star, Lindsey Kwate, the White Pine League Division 1 player of the year, put the match away with a kill. For the match Wemhoff had 8 kills and 1 ace. Krogh had 8 kills, including a block, 12 assists and 1 ace. Schwartz had 5 kills and 9 assists. Hiler had 4 kills, including 2 blocks, 1 assist and 2 aces. Poxleitner had 3 kills. Jordyn Higgins had 2 kills and 1 assist. Shears had 2 kills and 1 ace. Ashton Landers was unable to play due to another commitment. With the loss Prairie will be the District’s #2 seed at state and will open state play at 9 a.m. MDT Friday, Oct. 26 against District 3 champion Ambrose. Troy plays the District 3 runner-up Notus at the same time. Genesee, after taking the long way to state, will play at 11 a.m. MDT against District 5-6 champion Grace. Prairie takes a 15-8 record into the state tournament.
