Causes
of diabetes
By Kate Lustig
There are many misconceptions about why people get diabetes. Most people
assume diabetes is caused from eating too much sugar and/or obesity, which
is not always the case. To this day, doctors are still unsure why people
get type 1 diabetes. The most common theory is that type 1 is genetic,
meaning it is passed down from generation to generation. Another theory
is that type 1 is caused from faulty beta cells. Beta cells produce insulin
in the pancreas and they neglect to do that in type 1 diabetics. Both these
theories could be correct, or maybe there is another reason, but type 1
is definitely not caused from eating sugar. As with type 1 diabetes,
we still do not know exactly why people get type 2. It is believed that
both genetics and environmental factors cause type 2 diabetes. Obesity
often does lead to type 2, because the pancreas works overly hard to make
up for the extra weight. Luckily this means that type 2 can often be prevented,
but not always. People of certain genetics, race, or age can be more prone
to type 2 diabetes. I hope this will help people understand what causes
diabetes.
